Wednesday

Double Colored Rose

I am feeling almost back to normal, today, although I felt a little tired in the afternoon, and, again, in the evening.   It's been a good day, over all.  In the morning, I put away the laundry I did on Tuesday and tidied the shelf where I keep the towels in the linen closet.  Then, I did another load of laundry (my bed sheets, etc.) and practiced the piano.

Neighbor S brought us a big container of homemade tabouleh, this morning; she had called me, yesterday, to say she was planning to make some.  I didn't take a picture of it, but, we had some of it for dinner and it was delicious.

Lunch was leftovers from last night's dinner.  After lunch, I rested a bit and read blogs, etc.

In the evening, I watered the back garden.  The bearded iris bulbs that M planted are starting to flower:

Bearded Iris

I am hoping that the irises will do well in the back yard (they didn't do well in the front) and will multiply over the years.

After I finished watering the back yard, I picked what I could from my vegetable plot:

Today's Harvest

Broccoli side shoots (which are about the size of individual broccoli florets) and peapods, along with a bit of pea vine that broke off.  It was all turned into a stir fry, with the addition of some carrots, corn, and peanuts:

Stir Fry

I cooked some ground turkey to go with the stir fry, making a version of laab with it.  Dinner was tabouleh, followed by rice with laab and vegetable stir fry.  Stewed apples and ice cream for dessert.  The apples had been in the fridge for longer than I care to admit!  I added some ginger preserves to the stewed apples and that gave it a nice flavor.  Later, daughter cut up a mango and I made mango pickle for her to snack on.

Today, I am grateful for:
- S bringing us some of the tabouleh she made
- Continuing to feel better
- Garden flowers
- Working appliances
- Phone calls with friends

Today's joyful activity was spending time in the garden, seeing the flowers starting to bloom and picking today's harvest!

Plans for tomorrow include going to collect the tax document file.

How was your Wednesday?  What are your plans for Thursday?

    1. This is the first time I am having any success with growing them and I'm thrilled to see a second plant has put out a flower stalk! Still in bud, but, I hope it will continue to develop. It is very rewarding to be harvesting even some vegetables from my garden. I'm looking forward to beans, tomatoes, peppers, and zucchinis, later this summer! :)

  2. Your roses are so pretty. Do you have much of a problem with black spot? Or is it dry enough there that you don't?

    1. Thank you, June. No black spot. Occasionally, I get some powdery mildew on the rose leaves, because I tend to water in the evenings, rather than in the mornings. Mostly, my problem is, the heat - in the summer, roses that bloom in the morning are often desiccated by evening!

  4. Glad you are feeling better. Your iris is very pretty and very nice little harvest for your stir fry. I love tabouleh and make it often when the weather is warm. Today is vaccine day for me. Have a great day!

    1. Thank you, Martha. Stir fry is my "go to" dish whenever I have a handful of this and a bit of that! :D

Good luck with the vaccine; hope all goes well. Drink lots of water, afterwards.

  5. That rose is amazing - I love it! I also love all bearded iris. The first I ever saw was in my Grandmother's garden when I was little. We had come from a northern town where the tiny yard was almost bare, so "Nan's garden" was a magical place for me.
The fine weather continues and the washing line is well used this week!

    1. I, too, love the double colored rose; no two flowers look exactly the same on that bush. This is my first bearded iris, so, I am all excited about it!

I'm so glad to hear that the good weather continues. :)

  6. It's good news that you are feeling better. That's another two tasty meal ideas with the stir fry and the tabouleh, so thank you.

The online Indian cookery recipe today was Sukha Aloo (cumin potatoes) which is more of a dry spiciness rather than a sauce/gravy. I'm making it tomorrow but changing things a little to make it into a main meal rather than a side dish so will add other veg to the mix. I'm looking forward to it!

    1. Thank you, Eileen. Glad to know that I am giving you meal ideas. :)

Sukha aloo sounds a little like my spicy sauteed potatoes (ala thel dala), except, I add onions to mine and, sometimes, Maldive fish powder. I think the basic dish will adapt itself very nicely to the addition of other vegetables, to become a main meal. :)

    2. Yes, this one has onions as well.

    3. Sounds good. Which vegetables are you planning to add to it?

    4. Joy gave me some carrots so I'll use those plus green beans, peas and sprouts.

  7. Glad you are feeling better now. Your stir fry looks lovely and healthy. I really like laab, and used to make it but haven't in many years. Not sure why I quit, I seem to have forgotten about it. Thanks for reminding me! Your flowers are gorgeous! Celie

  8. What a beautiful crisp white Iris. I hope they spread well for you and you end up with a nice clump of them.
I have some iris that I got from the side of the road. A neighbor of my old boss had dug up plants from his garden and put them out for free so, (naturally ) when my boss called to tell me I headed right over there.
Along with the bearded iris there were Siberian iris, daffodils and columbines.
I called a friend of mine and she came over and got some too.
The neighbor must've dug up an entire bed of flowers
This is the third year the plants have been in the ground and the iris have not bloomed yet.
Fingers are crossed for this year.
You know the old saying, "the first year they sleep, the second year they creep and the third year they leap".
This is their leap year. lol

Your garden continues to produce and your rose is so pretty.

    1. Thank you, Debra. A second iris plant has sent up a flower stalk and that is white, too.

Sounds like you were able to rescue quite a few plants from your old boss's friend's garden clear out! My plants are also from someone else's garden clear out! One of M's other clients wanted him to dig up the excess and toss them. M said he offered to plant them in another area of the client's garden, but, apparently the client didn't want them. So, I got to benefit! :) I hope your irises will bloom for you, this year. :)
