Grocery Shopping on Thursday

Thursday morning, I spent a little time out in the back yard, checking on the plants, etc.  The green beans are starting to sprout!  I think M planted 24 beans and only about 6 have germinated, so far, but, hopefully, the others will come up in the next day or two.  A second iris flower stalk has started to bloom, but, the first stalk, with a couple of flowers on it, had toppled over!  So, I found two more sticks and staked the flower stalks.

In the early afternoon, I went to pick up the groceries we had ordered.  I didn't receive a text message about substitutions, this time, but, when I arrived at the grocery store, I was notified that they didn't have the salmon fillet I had ordered or the tray of chicken thighs.  Instead, they had substituted a smaller pack of four chicken thighs and I was asked if that would be acceptable.  I said it was.

This was my second grocery pick up so far in April.  I did a grocery pick up on April 2, to stock up on coffee (on sale for $5.99) and a few other items, including some snacks, salad dressing, salmon, fresh produce, and milk/half and half.  The total for that trip came to $74.05.

Today's grocery shopping included 1/2 gallon milk, 1/2 gallon half and half, a package of chicken thighs (4 thighs), a packet of 6 plain bagels, one more packet of coffee (because I've started drinking coffee with daughter!), fresh produce, a deli pizza ($5), and a 1lb. package of bacon.  The bacon was on sale for $3.77 with club card and digital coupon; $4.99 without the coupon with only the club card and $9.99 without club card!  A long time ago, my price point to buy bacon was $2/lb.  More recently, it was $3/lb.  But, I figured that, under the circumstances, $3.77 was acceptable.  Bacon is not something I eat a lot of, but, every now and then, I do enjoy having it with scrambled eggs or pancakes.  It is an occasional treat and will become even more of an occasional treat if prices keep going up!  When we put in the order, the estimated cost was shown as $90, but, the actual receipt showed $62.26.  I anticipate I'll need to do at least one more grocery pick up, later this month.

Daughter helped me put away the groceries and I baked the pizza for our lunch.  Fresh red grapes for dessert.

After lunch, I took a nap on the sofa!  Later, daughter made me a cup of coffee and I watched the evening news and knitted for a bit.  Afterwards, I watered the front garden and practiced the piano.

Later, I cooked a chicken curry and rice for dinner (there were leftover vegetables to go with them, as well as peach chutney).  Fresh raspberries for dessert.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Curbside grocery pick up
- A safe drive to the store and back
- As always, being able to afford to buy groceries!
- Time spent in the garden
- Phone calls and emails from friends

Today's joyful activity was spending time in the garden, tending to the plants.

Tomorrow, I have an appointment for a regularly scheduled check up with the oncologist, to go over the blood test results, etc.  My appointment is in the afternoon; I should be back home just in time for M to tend to the garden.

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

  1. Do you grow your own chillies? I'm debated whether to have a go this year or whether to stick to herbs I'll use more often.

I've noticed that some food prices are starting to creep up here so I need to keep an eye on my budget. I'm debating whether to do an in-store shop next week and see if I can pick up any yellow sticker bargains, just to help out.

I hope your oncologist appointment goes smoothly tomorrow.

    1. I am going to try growing my own chillies, this year; I bought one plant to see how well it will grow.

The rising food prices are a concern. The stores with lower prices don't offer curbside pick up and I am not yet comfortable with the idea of shopping there in person. So, I will continue to pay the higher prices at the supermarket for the time being, at least.

The appointment went well, thank you. :)

  2. I'm shocked on the bacon price, I stock up here when it's on sale 2 for $10 otherwise it's around $8 a pound!

    1. Another blogger mentioned bacon was $9.99 in her area and I thought that was too high, only to find out that the regular price in my area was also $9.99! Yet another reason to stock up when it goes on sale. :)

  3. Good luck at the doctor's. I hope you get a good report from your blood work.

I always enjoy reading about what you've shopped for at the grocery store. I guess it's a virtual way of looking in someone else's cart while standing in line lol
I agree about the bacon. It's not something we have often but when we do, we really enjoy it. It's just so yummy.

    1. Thank you, Debra. The doctor's appointment went well and the blood work was fine.

I, too, like to read about what others buy when they grocery shop. Curious minds want to know, I suppose! :) As for the bacon, daughter has requested that I fry some really crispy in order to crumble and add to our salads, so I'll be doing that with some of the package I bought. :)

  4. We also had pizza for lunch, today, Friday. The ones I buy are handy to keep a couple in the freezer. Well done taking a nap after dealing with the groceries earlier.

I hope your appointment goes well.

I did some paper shredding in the morning, and in the afternoon DH and I did the last bottling which involved rebottling a previous few litres that hadn't filtered properly. We enjoy working together and it went quite well.

    1. Having frozen pizza on hand is very convenient, isn't it?

The appointment went well, thank you. The blood test results were good, too.

Sounds like you had a busy day! That's nice that you enjoy working together. Makes any task a little more pleasant, doesn't it?

  5. Grocery pick up is a great service to have. I've used it myself in the past but, because Lily has a very limited diet, often the substitutions are of no use. Pizza sounds delicious. We usually have pizza on a Friday evening to save me having to cook. X

    1. The grocery pick up and delivery have been a life saver for me. I can specify no substitutions, if I choose to; so far, the majority of the substitutions have worked (I still have those 6 cans of dulce de leche - the caramelized condensed milk - to deal with!) Pizza is becoming a grocery pick up day treat, for us! :D

  6. Are you finding that ordering the shopping is lowering your food bills? I haven't been ordering, but I have cut down on the number of trips to the shops and I have been finding that when I do that it does turn out cheaper and I tend to pre-plan meals!

    1. No, I think I am paying more when I order because I am ordering from a store with higher prices on fresh produce than the stores I used to shop in, earlier. However, those stores don't offer online ordering and curbside pick up. Also, I am buying more groceries because my daughter is home with me. I've more than doubled my monthly grocery budget, as a result of higher prices and buying more groceries. I'm not complaining, though, because I appreciate being able to pick up groceries without shopping in person during the pandemic and having daughter home is wonderful. :)

  7. I was surprised when hubby decided to make a quick trip to the grocery this week, I can't remember what he said he wanted to get, but I was delighted when he brought home flowers for me.

    1. Aw, that was so sweet of him to do so! You have a very loving husband, but, I'm sure you already knew that! :)
