A Surprise and A Celebration on Sunday

Home Made Apple Pie!

My daughter's friend A baked me an apple pie and brought it over, this morning, as a thank you gift for shortening her bridesmaid dress!  I thought it was very sweet of her to do so.  My daughter was in on the surprise, because A had asked her what time I'd be home so A could bring the pie.

After A had left, I made a quick run to the grocery store to buy a gift card for my cousin V's older grandson.  I had forgotten to do that when I was at the store, earlier in the week.  I got a gift card to the bookstore;  his parents can choose a book for him when they return to New York.

I had called cousin P, earlier in the morning to confirm that she and her daughter could give me a ride to the Christening and reception, afterwards.  The Christening was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and cousin said they will leave around 2:00 p.m.  That gave me plenty of time to get my clothes ready and get dressed.  I had been debating what to wear.  The reception afterwards was being held at a country club and I felt that called for something a little dressy.  Should I wear my long black skirt with a blouse (if so, which blouse?) or, should I wear a sari?  In the end, I chose to wear one of my saris.  After all, if I don't wear my saris to these types of functions, where else am I to wear them?

The Christening went quite smoothly, I thought.  The baby fussed a little bit at the beginning, but didn't cry.  The reception included a buffet dinner and dancing.  It was supposed to end at 7:30 p.m., but, I think we were there until about 8:00 p.m.  It was 9:00 p.m. when my cousin and her daughter dropped me off at home.

Two friends I met at the gathering, today, offered to bring some dishes to the prayer gathering next Saturday. At first, I said it was OK, I was able to manage, but they insisted, and so, one will make the beef curry and the other will bring a dessert!  Friend R offered to bring something for dessert, too!  At this rate, it will be a potluck!

I had a short video chat with my daughter after I came home.  She has to give another presentation at a conference in Sacramento, tomorrow, and has to have an early start to get there on time.  So, we said goodnight, early.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Daughter's friend A bringing me a homemade apple pie as an expression of her thanks!
- Cousin and her daughter giving me a ride to today's family gathering and back
- Sari blouses that still fit!
- Family gatherings
- Friends offering to bring dishes to the prayer gathering dinner.

Today's joyful activity was gathering with family and friends.

Monday's To Do List:
- Finish sewing the baby girl quilt
- Start cleaning the house
- Buy two small area rugs
- Make and mail birthday card

How was your Sunday?  What are your plans for Monday and the coming week?

  3. That pie is beautiful. If it tastes half as good as it looks, you're in for a treat.

I think you hit upon something. Make your prayer gatherings into potlucks, or at least part of them. That way it wouldn't be such a burden on the host. Just getting the house, dishes, and drinks ready would be enough for me.

    1. It tasted very good, Live and Learn; not overly sweet and she had put lemon zest in it.

We've had a couple of potluck prayer gatherings. There are a few of us who think it's a good idea, but, others in the group don't. I usually offer to bring something or take a dessert, anyway.

  5. oh, yummy ...pie! that is certainly a 'tasty repayment' for your sewing skills- I have such a weakness for pie in any flavor-
I am so glad you chose to wear a sari ... they are always so beautiful and so becoming- it's good to retain ties to your own traditions-
we are suddenly experiencing autumn here in this part of Texas (the southeast part close to the Texas/Louisiana border)- it is probably not going to stay with us long though, as heat and humidity usually stick around much later in the year-
    regards from here-stay well-

    1. The pie was very good! I had a small piece of it, last night. There was a lemony taste that was quite unexpected, but, delightful. I am planning to freeze most of the pie so that my daughter will be able to enjoy some of it, when she comes down, next month. :)

I like wearing saris. I often feel my wardrobe is inadequate for a lot of these occasions, but, not when I am in a sari. :)

Enjoy the cooler weather while you can! Afternoons are still nice and warm, here, but the mornings and evenings are cool. Hope all is well with you, Barb, and especially, your daughter. Keeping you both in my prayers.

  7. What a pleasant day! Apple pie, getting dressed up for a happy occasion, offers of help with food for the prayer meeting as well.....
Our family headed out early as DGD has a riding lesson this evening, but we had a relaxed breakfast and morning and they left after lunch. Now I'm still taking it easy, after all, it is a holiday!

    1. It was a very pleasant day, Bushlady. Sounds like you've had a lovely visit with your family, even if your son and family had to leave early. I'm glad to read that you continued to take it easy, after they left, and enjoyed the holiday. :)

  8. hah, I've been posting about apples too. That pie looks wonderful. How lovely you will have looked in your sari for the Christening - I think I would want to wear them to any special occasion.

    1. I guess this is the time of year for apples and baking. :) Thank you, Eloise; I felt dressed for the occasion in the sari. Besides, I already had it in my closet and I shouldn't keep things if I am not going to wear them. :)

    1. It is a beautifully made pie, isn't it? I had another small piece, tonight, and kept one more piece in the fridge. Then, I froze the rest of it, to share with my daughter, when she next visits. :)

  10. The apple pie is making me salivate.
I am glad you decided on your sari. When Son2 and DIL2 got married DIL3 wore her native Swiss dress to the wedding. We were thrilled she did!

    1. It is a very good apple pie. I froze most of it, though, so I am not tempted by it and I can share it with my daughter. :)

I, too, am glad that I chose to wear the sari, Anne. I wrap those 6 yards of fabric around me and a multitude of figure defects are hidden! :D

  11. What a gorgeous apple pie! It sounds like life is happy and busy for you. Sunday I took a hike with Lula, attended a lecture on safe hiking, did yoga, and cleaned the cabin. Today i washed the sheets, blogged, listened to Suze Orman's podcast, and re-knit my pink alpaca blanket.

Life is going very well. I'll have a busy week, this week, getting ready for the prayer gathering on Saturday, but, after that, things should slow down a little bit. :)

Sounds like you've had a busy day, yourself. Re-knitting? I hate it when I have to re-knit something! But, it should be a very warm blanket, when you are done with it!

  12. That’s cool that you wore a sari to the christening. My mother took one of her Indian coworkers to the Greek festival downtown, and the coworker wore a sari there. Glad you had fun at the baptism. I avoid baptisms, because my godson was killed three years ago and it reminds me of him. It’s a great way to welcome a baby.

    1. I am the only person in my family who actually likes to wear saris, but, I look for any excuse to wear them! :) I remember you posting about your godson on the anniversary of his death. It's good to take care of yourself and avoid painful reminders to the extent possible. (((HUGS)))
