Blood Tests and Garage Doors on Wednesday

I went for my fasting blood test, today.  When I opened the garage door, there was a big noise and a part of the metal contraption that opens and closes the garage door fell off!  It had been attached by a nut and bolt, but, I guess it had got loose without my noticing it and had come out.  I decided to fix it later, closed the garage door, manually (it goes up to open and can be pulled down to close), and went for my blood test.

The blood test, itself, went well.  I didn't have an appointment, but, I didn't have to wait.  In fact, I was in and out of there within 20 minutes and didn't even have to pay for the parking!  On the way home, I picked up a chili dog from hot dog place I pass by for my brunch.

When I came home, I managed to manually open the garage door and parked the car, inside.  Then, I couldn't close it all the way!  Neither could I fix the part that fell off, because I couldn't get the thing to line up properly in order to fix the nut and bolt!  After some consideration, I decided that it would be better the park the car in my drive way, until I get the garage door repaired.  I managed to get the garage door to open, but, then, it got stuck in the open position, and I couldn't pull it down to close!

I called the monks at the temple to ask if they knew of anyone who might be able to fix it for me and the monks said they'll call around to see.  I also went across the street to ask one of my neighbors if she or her husband know of anyone who could fix it.  Her husband wasn't home, at the time, so she said to come back later to ask him when he came home.

Then, when I was watering the front garden, I saw a different neighbor and asked for his help, but, he couldn't pull the garage door down, either.

Later in the evening, the monks from the temple called back, and one of them came with a handyman who is known to them.  These monks are such a blessing to me!  He had to dismantle part of the garage door opener system, but he did enough to get the door to close, for tonight.  He said he will come over, tomorrow morning, to fix the door.  According to the monk who brought him over, he is a good handyman.  If that is so, then, I have several other jobs for him to do!  The car will be parked in the driveway for the night, but that should be alright.

Today, I am grateful for:
- The blood test went well
- I didn't have to pay for parking at the lab
- The monks at the temple and all their help
- Handyman A's help with the garage door
- Friend R calling to check on me

  1. Bummer about the garage door opener! Glad the monks knew someone who could at least get it closed. Hope the repair is an easy fix.

    1. Thank you, Anne. The hardware on the sides of the garage door are what was already in place when I bought the house, almost 28 years ago; the automatic opener was installed when I remodeled the place about 20 years ago. Probably the parts were worn out and the whole thing might need replacing. But, I'll see what he has to say.

  2. I hope this Handyman fixes it OK. A good handyman is a "keeper" and worth paying, if he gets the job done well. Glad the blood tests were ok

  3. I hope the blood results are good. As for the garage door ... that's a nuisance but how kind of the monks to find someone to help you, and especially good that he may be able to help with some other your other jobs as well.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I should know the results sometime today or tomorrow. Yes, it is very kind of the monks to help me out. They have been a blessing to me. My mother used to teach them English when they first came to this country; they remember that and help me in return, whenever they can.

  4. A good handyman is worth his weight in gold. I hope this one works out and soon your garage door will be going up and down like it's supposed to.

    1. Thank you, Live and Learn. Yes, a good handyman is a treasure! Once he is done with the garage door, I have a few other things I'd like him to take a look at and give me a quote. Maybe, just maybe, I will get some of those projects crossed off my list! :)

  5. oh, I often think the garage door device here is bewitched- it has what was supposed to be a 'magic eye' that is (supposed) to keep it from closing if a car (or anything else) is in the way BUT that 'magic eye' can act more like an 'evil eye' instead- the other day my youngest daughter put her car about halfway into the garage and ran into the house to pick up who-knows-what and then leave again- car should have been quite okay BUT as she entered the house we all heard a very loud crunch ... door closing on car- it did eventually stop closing (no surprise there ... a car was under it) but she got a major ding to the vehicle- this wasn't the first time ... I have already called for a new door and opening/closing mechanism- sometimes technology does nip at our backsides!! hope you get yours straightened out ... AND a good new handyperson as a bonus-
as usual regards from here ... stay well (and good wishes for excellent test results)-

    1. Oh, no, Barb! I hope your daughter's car is not badly damaged! My door is supposed to have one of those detectors so it doesn't close while something is blocking the light, but I don't have a lot of faith in it!

The handyman was able to get the door working, again, although I still have to replace the non-working remote. He will also put in a new side door in the garage to replace the one that is warped and deteriorated and make some adjustments to my sliding glass door, which doesn't slide that easily. I told him that I have a list of projects as I have been waiting to find a good handyman. I hope it will all work out well.

Thank you for the well wishes. Hope all is well with you and your family, too.

  6. It’s very hard to find good, trustworthy handymen. I’m glad that the monks found someone for you.
I’m fortunate that I have several friends and even some colleagues who repair things for me.

    1. You are very fortunate to have such helpful friends and colleagues, Nil. I used to have a couple of friends who would fix things for me, but, over the years, they've moved away or have otherwise become unavailable to fix things.

I am very thankful that the monks referred this handyman to me. Apparently, he lives close to the temple and does various jobs for them. He said he will come over, next Saturday, to do a couple of other jobs for me. I feel euphoric! :D

  7. Garage doors are quite heavy to open and close, so a disfunctional one must be a real problem. Well, it seems that this glitch may result in you having found a good handyman for all the other jobs that need fixing.
We are getting a lot of rain lately, but still have plenty of colour in the trees and plants to cheer up our surroundings. At least it is giving DH a break from woodcutting, he was giving himself a backache shifting wood around!

    1. Oops! Sorry, Bushlady, but, apparently I skipped responding to your comment, yesterday!

It is a blessing not to have to pull up the garage door and tug at it to close. I'm glad to have found a handyman, although, he was a no show, today! Well, maybe he was busy, elsewhere.

Glad your husband can get a break from the woodcutting due to the rain. Keep warm and dry!

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. The monks are very kind and helpful. The garage door has been fixed and the handyman will be here, on Saturday, to work on a couple of other projects for me! If this works out well, I might be able to get a lot of neglected jobs done!

    1. Thank you, Jules. My new handyman was a no show today, but, I am hoping he'll still be able to work on a couple of other projects for me, as time permits.
