I worked on the quilt backing, today, with some help from Dancer, of course. While I sewed on the pieced panel I wanted to insert to make the backing sheet wider, Dancer tested out the bed to see if it was a suitable surface for working on the quilt:

Dancer Checks the Comfort Level |
"Dancer, I need you to move so that I can spread out the backing sheet."
|
"Hey, what's this? Is Mummy tucking me in?" |
"No, Dancer, I need you off the bed!"
He got off the bed long enough for me to spread the sheet. But, when I went to measure the width of the sheet, he jumped into help with that!

"Measure from here, Mummy" |

"I'll just bite off this extra bit!" |
He is such a helpful kitty! With his help, I managed to make a cut, lengthwise, 24 inches from one side edge, and inserted the pieced panel that I had sewn, yesterday and earlier, today:

The Pieced Panel |
This panel is made up of some extra patches and fabric leftover from sewing the front. It was sewn to widen the sheet in order to make it wide enough to cover the whole back of the quilt. I sewed it off center, intentionally, to add a design element:

The Other Side of the Mountain (Quilt) |
I'm reminded of the children's song, "The bear went over the mountain ... to see what he could see" and all he could see was "the other side of the mountain"!
Do you have helpful pets, too?
Now I shall be humming that song all day! Small children and animals often bring us great joy, but occasionally they are more hindrance than help!
ReplyDeleteHa, ha, songs that we keep hearing in our heads are called "ear worms", apparently! As for small children and pets, they do create twice the work, sometimes, don't they?
DeleteBut twice the fun!
DeleteDefinitely! I remember the time when my daughter "helped" to make a dessert, when she was about 2; I turned my back for a minute to get another ingredient and she took the egg shells I had put aside, crushed them, and added them to the pudding mixture! I turned around just in time to see what she was doing! LOL. I strained the mixture and it was fine, but, we still remind each other of the time when she did that and laugh. :D
DeleteYou are a wonderful quilter...I am not sure about Dancer, his way of measuring may make things come up short. :) Blessings for a great new week. xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susie. Don't worry; I double check all of Dancer's measurements, just to make sure! :D Hope all is well with you.
DeleteHow lovely of Dancer to 'help' you like that. You are a very lucky mummy!
ReplyDeleteThe bear went over the mountain brings back memories of trying to teach a young girl to play it on her clarinet. She couldn't get the rhythm at all and lessons were a struggle. I kept suggesting we left it and maybe try again in the future but she wanted to keep going and in the end she could play something vaguely resembling the tune. It turned out that her grandfather has said it was his favourite tube and she wanted to okay it for him!
Aw, that was so sweet of your student to want to learn the song to play for her grandfather! It is a catchy little tune, isn't it?
DeleteYes, I'm very lucky to have Dancer's help! I don't know how I'd manage to get my projects done if he's not there to lend a helping paw! :D
Sweet kitty. My cat used to do that when I'd make fleece blankets or when we put the Christmas tree skirt down.
ReplyDeleteThey do love to play with fabric and yarn, etc., don't they? Jumping on the bed when I put new sheets is another favorite game!
DeleteI love to see Dancer being so helpful. I am very fortunate in that Mog likes to donate (very) generously to my mouse collection! X
ReplyDeleteDancer and Mog are both very helpful kitties! The garden strays keep me supplied with dead lizards! Many mornings, I find a baby lizard, belly up, on my back steps! :o
DeleteSeeing the photos of Dancer's antics reminds me very much of one of our cats and how he loved to chew on things. I have a photo of him holding down a pipe cleaner and chewing on the end.
ReplyDeleteYou are smart to position the insert to one side so that it looks intentional, not just a "fix".
Oh, Dancer used to love playing with pipe cleaners! But, then, he stopped being interested in them.
DeleteThank you. I had seen some examples online and thought this placement would look good. :)
