October 1 Groceries |
I went grocery shopping on Sunday, October 1 for milk, bananas, and a can of condensed milk (as well as cat food). Milk and bananas because I was out of them; condensed milk because I had opened the last can and I like to always have at least one can on hand (earthquake/emergency supplies).
I spent:
1/2 gal. milk = $1.99
1 can condensed milk = $1.59
4 bananas at $.49/lb = $.55
Total = $4.13

The cat food isn't included in my grocery budget.
But a certain cat kept a close eye on my purchases, nevertheless:

Today, I went to the dentist's to have my crown cemented back on (temporary fix; I need more dental work, including a new crown on that tooth).
After the dentist's I stopped in at the small ethnic grocery store adjoining the dental clinic. I bought a container of blackberries and a container of raspberries for $.99, each:

When I was at the ethnic grocery store, I saw that they had a box filled with feijoa, selling for $1.99/lb. When I came home, I picked a handful from my tree at home. They are much smaller than the ones at the store, but the price is right!

My grocery budget for October is $53, as I explained in my earlier post.
So far, I have spent $4.13 + $1.98 = $6.11
Balance left in the budget = $53 - 6.11 = $46.89
Have you gone grocery shopping yet in October?
I have no idea what feijoa is, but you can't beat free!
ReplyDeleteAnne, they are a type of guava; they are also known as pineapple guava. You cut them in half and scoop out the soft flesh inside.
DeleteAlthough your dental visit resulted in a temporary fix I am pleased you immediately called the dental clinic to have the work started. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI had to look up what feijoa were and how to eat - now if I can just remember to use that word in a game of scrabble!
Blackberries and raspberries such a treat.
Thank you, Sandy. :)
DeleteFeijoa are also known as pineapple guavas. I enjoyed the 4 I picked, yesterday. They are among the smallest feijoa fruit I've ever picked - no doubt due to the after effects of the drought. I didn't think they were ready to be picked when I checked on them at the end of September (when I did my Garden in September post). But, yesterday, a whole lot of them had fallen on the ground and that's how you know they are ready for picking!
I am glad to learn what a Feijoa is! Your berries were a good price. Every time you buy bananas it makes me hungry for one...I love bananas. (Hated them as a kid though...ha) I bought sweetened condensed milk this week too...it is good to have on hand! Andrea
ReplyDeleteGlad to have introduced you to a new fruit, Andrea. :) I have already eaten all the raspberries I bought! I am considering buying some more for that price and maybe freezing them. Hope you were able to get some bananas for yourself, because I'll be buying more at the end of the week!
DeleteYou are doing great on your budget so far. I love any kind of guava and enjoyed eating them growing up. We also used the new growth at the end of the branches to help stop diarrhea. The Hawaiians would use the guava itself to help with constipation and the tips of the new growth on the branches for the opposite problem. It really works!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Debbie. Yes, I'm off to a good start with this month's budget. I've read that guava leaf tea is good for diarrhea, cholesterol, and diabetes. I've no first hand experience of it, though.
DeleteThat is a very good price for berries. You have a very small grocery budget so I am glad you have a cat Marshall to watch over it.
ReplyDeleteMy regular grocery budget is $75, but I overspent in August and I am making up for it. Dancer takes great interest in what I buy and always comes to inspect everything! :)
DeleteYou find some really good deals! I really need to work in this area still. I feel like I don't make use of what I have. I keep trying but sometimes forget to take things out of the freezer to cook - as I cook mostly from scratch it's a little bit of a pain. I really need to make some frozen dinners for days I don't feel like cooking or don't have things out. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I think there's more of a price war here because we have so many grocery stores. Don't you hate it when you don't remember to take things out in time to for them to thaw? Have you tried thawing them in the microwave?
