Chicken Soup on Thursday

It's been another warm day, but highs only in the 90s, not the low 100s.

I went to the office prepared for the too-cool air conditioning - wearing a scarf around my neck and a jacket in addition to a cardigan.  Even so, I had to go outside the building twice in the afternoon, to walk around a bit to warm up!  The farmers' market was just closing up when I went outside the first time, so I looked around, but didn't buy anything.

I had a good, productive day at the office.  I finished one project, just in time to have two other projects come in!

After I came home, I had a cup of coffee and relaxed a bit.  Then, I made a pot of soup with the leftover roast chicken from the prayer gathering.  I added all of the steamed asparagus that was also leftover and some more vegetables - carrots, celery, onion, tomato - and made chicken and vegetable soup for dinner:

Chicken and Vegetable Soup

Soup when it is 90F outside?  Definitely!  I grew up in a tropical country, where soup was eaten year round.

I called my friend R and offered to bring her some soup, but she had just returned from an event at her workplace during which dinner had been served.

I have enough soup left over for another two or three meals.  It is supposed to get cooler, next week, with highs in the low 70s; maybe I'll freeze the rest of the soup till then.

I had a fresh guava from an aunt's garden, after the soup.  She brought a bag of them to the prayer gathering and I shared them with the others, but there are several left over that are getting overripe!

Today, I am grateful for:
- Scarves
- A stroll around the farmers' market
- Guavas from an aunt's garden
- Safe commutes to the office and back
- Chatting with my daughter

It was a relatively uneventful day.  I am happy to have an uneventful day or two, after the busy days, last week, of getting ready for the prayer gathering.  But, I am afraid it doesn't make very interesting reading!

How was your day?  Are you looking forward to it being Friday, tomorrow?

  1. I don't/didn't live in tropical country and I like soup all year round. I just like soup. :)

    1. I do, too, Live and Learn. I am thinking I should get down my soup plates and start using them, again.

  2. Good idea to freeze a portion or two of your chicken soup. Very handy to pop out when you don't feel up to cooking.

I had to google guava fruit to see how you eat it. Is it sweet or more like a grapefruit?

Always fun to read your blog even when as you say "uneventful" - the comments and your answer also add a positive touch.

    1. Sandy, guavas are sweet when ripe. I like to eat them when they are not quite ripe and still firm, but they get soft when fully ripe (and develop a strong aroma that a lot of people don't like - my whole fridge is smelling of ripe guava, right now!). One eats them cut up in slices - unpeeled, seeds, and all. But, one can pare the peel and remove the soft pulp which contain the seeds, too - in which case, there's hardly anything left to eat!

Thank you for saying my blog is fun to read. Some evenings, when I sit down to write, I think, all I did today was go to the office, come home, lie on the sofa, and go on-line; what is there to write about? But that is what 90% of our days are like, isn't it? :)

    1. Andrea, if I make soup, I will add whatever vegetables I have on hand. I don't much like vegetables, but I will eat them in soups. :)

  4. That soup looks delicious. It is always helpful to add nutritious extras from the fridge. I think those soups are so much better than anything from a strict recipe! I love to create soups from leftover juices from the crock pot if I don't use them for gravy. Or the leftover gravy gets more liquid, perhaps veggie stock and morphs into soup with some yummy extras. Anyone might think I like cooking! Not really, I just like creating.
I was out today and everyone seemed to be commenting that it was chilly. We have been spoiled for so long this fall and now we are noticing the difference. Not sure I would like your 90s but something around 80 might feel nice! At least we haven't had snow, unlike the poor people out west who have already had some this fall.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I don't think I've ever made any soup from a recipe! It's almost always, boil a bunch of things together, throw in a bit of this and a bit of that, add some of the other and taste to see if there's enough salt. :D Of course, the classic soup I grew up eating was mullagathanni (sometimes also spelt mullagatawny, but "thanni" means water in Tamil, so it makes more sense to me to spell it the way I do).

I hope your fall lasts a good long time before winter arrives! We are supposed to be in the 70s, next week, so I think, we'll be experiencing our version of fall, soon.

  5. What a challenge to try to stay warm as you work. Are you allowed to have a small safe heater in your area? I recall a coworker once taped a piece of cardstock on the ceiling AC vent to partially block the cold air. Even if it didn't prevent the cold air flow, it prevented the draft from blowing directly on her. Just a thought. Brrr.

    1. Carolyn, I have thought of blocking the vent; in fact, I discussed it with one of my coworkers, just the other day. I am not tall enough, even if I were to stand on the desk, to do it myself. I need to talk to one of my taller colleagues and ask if he/she could help me. Technically, we aren't allowed to have personal space heaters (for safety purposes, they claim), but I know at least one person who has a space heater. I am seriously considering getting one for myself and I will use the state of my health as justification. We will be moving to a different building at the end of the year or early next year; I am hoping it will be a warmer environment, there!

  6. I can remember tasting guava juice with my grandfather when I was in 8th grade. It still brings back a good memory. I've never eaten the fruit any other way.

Today (Friday) was a good, pretty uneventful day for me. It is so rare for me to have a day like this that it is noteworthy. I had to do an errand around 1 hour from my house, so I tackled that one first thing. My 17-year-old daughter went with me. We tried to stop by and see a friend, but she was not home when I called, so we went on.

Since we had extra time, since my friend wasn't home, we went to a mall. We go to the mall so rarely that my daughter had not been to that one, even though it's less than 1/2 hour from our house. (We've only lived here for 1 year) I spent a couple of coupons I had at Bath and Body Works, for 1 free item, one for $5--then 20% off--bringing my grand total to $4. I picked up some clearance items for a gift from another store, used a gift card and coupons at JoAnn's fabrics, and took J out for lunch. Then, I took her home, and picked up my youngest at her school, and took her to her appointment. After that, I took Rob out in the evening and we spent some time. It has been so rare that we can get away, but we are trying to take more time together now that the tag end of our very large family is growing old enough to stay home alone. (At 21, 17, and 13, we feel they can survive for a few hours!) What fun!

After that, just t.v. and a little embroidery while I was watching. Good thing I had a relaxing day today--tomorrow, I watch my nephew! That will be fun, too, but not relaxing:)

    1. Becky, your day sounds like it was very pleasant. You got some great bargains at the mall and I am sure your daughter enjoyed the one-on-one time with you. I'm glad you and Rob were able to spend some alone time, too.

Leaving the kids alone at home is a big step, isn't it? I remember the first time I had to leave my daughter alone at home - it was the summer after my mother had died and daughter had just turned 13. She was home during school holidays and I had to go to work. I was afraid my ex-husband would kick up a fuss about daughter being left home alone during the day, although I had neighbors who were keeping an eye on her and she would often go over to one neighbor's house to play with her daughters (almost daily, actually!) I called our state's child services to ask if there was a minimum age before children could be left home alone. According to them, there wasn't a minimum age, it depended on the maturity of the child, but they recommended that no one under 12 was kept home alone. Well, daughter was 13 and very mature for her age, so I felt it was OK. :)

  8. I love soup year round. Today I made a big pot of venison barley soup, it was so savory and good. And we have enough left over for several lunches.
