Yes, I Did It Again!

Fabric Haul

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I went shopping at one of my favorite stores!

I spent the last couple of years sewing down my stash. I said I will not buy anymore fabric just because it was on sale, I will only buy if I have a project in mind.

Well, I did have a project in mind (a holiday gift) and I wanted a fabric with a particular design for that project.  That fabric is regularly priced at $10.99 per yard and I didn't want to pay that much.  Even when it went on sale for 30% off, I dithered about buying it.  It is now on sale for 40% off and I decided that it was the right time to buy it.

In addition, I had seen a store ad for $1/yard fabric, but, that was, apparently, for netting, which I didn't need.  However, there was a line of 100% cotton fabric, which they called craft cotton, that was selling at $2/yard, which was apparently their regular price!  Well, obviously, I was very pleased to find any fabric for that price.  I filled my cart with several bolts of fabric and took them to the cutting table!

Black & White Prints

I bought one yard of the more expensive fabric I had wanted for the one specific project I had in mind, and all that was left (1.25 yards) of a blue gingham print.  I bought four yards of a purple print and three yards of everything else!  51 yards of fabric in all!

The Coordinating Purples

I have plenty of fabric for quilt backings and borders, now.

The Blues

And lots of coordinating fabric for a planned quilt (as opposed to a scrappy quilt).

Some Yellows

An older lady who was purchasing some lace trim sort of shook her head at the quantity of fabric I was buying and said there had better be lots of quilts being made and she hoped the fabrics were on sale.  My daughter assured her that they were selling at a good price.  The lady told me that I should wash the fabric before using it and I told her that I usually do.  The store assistant who cut the fabric said that she was originally from Pennsylvania and mentioned the Amish and their handmade quilts. She had greeted my daughter with a "Namaste", assuming that we were Indian, and my daughter said she didn't have the heart to tell her that we weren't Indian.  LOL.  But, it was a nice to spend the time in small talk while the fabric was being measured and cut.

Pink with Stars and Apple Print for Daughter

The fabric came to $107.60; with city, county, and state sales taxes added, it came to a grand total of $118.33.  I was quite happy with that total.  Crafts supplies are a line item in my monthly budget and I had enough in the budget to splurge a bit.  In any case, I wanted to stock up on my craft supplies before any new tariffs go into effect and prices go up.

Today, Friday the 13th, I washed some of the fabric I bought, dried, and ironed them, ready to turn into at least two holiday gifts.

I am grateful to have a replenished fabric stash!

  1. It would have been rude not to buy the fabric, at that price :)

    1. Thank you, Angela. I find that, in general, people at fabric and crafts supplies stores tend to be friendly and interested in what one is planning to make, etc. I shall post pictures as I make things. :)

  3. My sister used to say that you can never have too much fabric! You did get quite a haul and it is all so lovely. And all at an excellent price. Fabric is usually so expensive. I look forward to seeing a photo of what you make!

    1. Your sister was right! I was very happy with my purchases; one really can't go wrong with $2/yd. fabric. They were having a good sale, with "quilter's cotton" on sale for $3.99/yd., too, but, I was happy with the $2/yd. fabric. :)

  5. Bless, you gave me a good laugh when you recounted the fabric store small talk. Isn't it funny how people's assumptions create their perceptions? You and your daughter were so gracious, even with the Namaste greeting, haha!

I used to sew many years ago as a teen. I kind of miss it, but I have no supplies at this point. I have four solid weeks of vacation, so I have a few photos crafts in mind. My husband can get concerned about my "projects" because when I start losing steam, it becomes his project, too. 😀 I tend to bite off more than I can chew, but he kindly assists with enough advance notice.

Is your daughter staying with you through New Years? I certainly hope you both can continue to be together as long as possible. And thank you so much for the kind holiday wishes you left me in response to my last comment. Wishing you and yours joy and peace ad infinitum. ✨💖✨

    1. Hi, Nia. Yes, it is funny to see how people's assumptions shape their perceptions. :)
Your photo crafts sound interesting. I hope you are able to work on them during your vacation, especially if your husband is willing to help you. If you feel like taking up sewing again, maybe you can buy a kit - they usually include everything you need to start sewing.
Yes, my daughter will be staying with me through New Years. She is not planning to go back to her apartment until she is able to get about without her crutches. Once she is able to walk about with only her walking boot, she will be able to manage on her own.
Thank you for the holiday wishes. I hope you have a lovely vacation and all the best over the holidays.

  7. Beautiful fabrics. It's always good to have a little treat. That's a pretty good price too.
I cringed a little bit at both the customer and the sales person.

  9. Sounds like a fun purchase with the prospect of more fun to come. I look forward to seeing what you make. How kind of the store assistant to try to welcome you as she did. I don't know if it was a good idea to make assumptions but I think it would have been OK to smile, return the greeting and then say with a laugh "...although actually we aren't...!" TBH if anyone said that to me here, or even to Mum, I would think it strange (and I'm quite sure I have never heard it used in that way, even in India).

    1. It was a fun purchase and every time I wondered if I should get this color or that design, my daughter urged me to get it! LOL. I told her that she was an enabler! :D
We just smile when people make assumptions. There was a time when I would try to correct them, but, I don't bother to, anymore. A lot of people don't know where Sri Lanka is or that it's not a part of India.
