On Friday

A Basket of Crocheted Flowers

Another of daughter's crafts projects.  She started on the flowers on Thursday and finished the project on Friday.  She used a basket I had in my craft supplies stash.  The little basket of flowers was given to gardener friend M as part of his Christmas gift, along with a small check and a jar of calamondin jam.  M gifted us with a rose plant!

Friday got off to a bit of a wobbly start when the gas wall heater/furnace wouldn't work when I tried to switch it on in the morning!  I checked the stove and the clothes dryer (both are gas appliances) and they worked fine and there was hot water, so the water heater was working too.  Only the furnace was not working.  I called the gas company and made an appointment for another service technician call.  The earliest they could fit me in is on Monday, which is reasonable; they couldn't give me a specific time, but, they will fit me in between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.  I am fine with that.   I just have to make sure that I am home all day on Monday.  The heater is only 3 years old, but, it has been giving me trouble ever since it was installed!  The heater has a 5 year warranty on labor and 10 year warranty on parts, however, so, depending on what the gas company service technician has to say, I might be calling the company I bought it from and see what they can do about it.

In the meantime, I ordered another small electric heater and picked it up from the store in the afternoon.  I also picked up some Chinese food from a restaurant in the neighborhood for a late lunch (with leftovers for dinner).

Daughter designed and printed out some labels to attach to the jars of jam and chutney I am planning to give as gifts this year and, because the printer ink had dried up, she hand colored the labels (and ordered some new printer ink).  Later in the day, daughter cut up the green beans I had bought and I cooked and froze them for the almsgiving.  I have now cooked all the curried I had planned to cook ahead of time; the last curry will be cooked on Friday, after I buy the kale I need for it.

On Friday, I was grateful for:

- The gas company will send out a service technician on Monday
- The heater has a 5 year warranty on labor and 10 year warranty on parts
- I was able to order and pick up another small electric space heater
- The gift of a rose bush from M
- Daughter's help with the almsgiving preparations and getting the Christmas/New Year gifts ready

Friday's joyful activity was crocheting.

Plans for Saturday include taking Dancer to his vet appointment, catching up on a few blogs, and tidying the family room.

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for Saturday?

  1. Before you mentioned it, I was thinking that this heater has been a problem since the beginning. I hope you can get things straightened out. Good job on getting all of your make-ahead cooking done for the almsgiving.

    1. You are right, June; I think I got a "lemon" when I got this heater! I hope they are able to fix it, but, I've a feeling that I might have to pay for a new one.
Thank you; it feels good to have much of the almsgiving cooking done ahead of time. :)

  2. It does seem like that heater has given you a lot of trouble. I hope the technician can fix it on Monday.
The flower bouquet is so pretty! Your daughter is very talented. I hope Dancer's vet appointment went well and he wasn't too stressed. My cat was begging for some of my lunch, so I gave her a piece of cheese. She threw it up! I felt bad, it was my fault giving her that. She's fine now and no more cheese!

    1. Yes, Celie; this heater has had problems right from the start. I hope whatever is wrong will be an easy fix.
Thank you; the flower basket turned out really well, didn't it?
I'm sorry your kitty threw up after eating the cheese. Most cats are dairy intolerant, which is probably why she threw up the cheese. Dancer complained a bit about the visit and threw up just before we got to the vet's; I had lined the carrier with two towels, so that was okay.

  3. I'm sure you must enjoy your daughter's creativity that shows up in so many different ways! A basket of flowers? Get out the yarn in glowing colours. Coloured printer ink dried up? Hand colour the labels. She may be on crutches but she certainly makes up for it with her crafting skills!

    1. Thank you, Sharon. I'm looking forward to doing some crafting with my daughter over the holidays and to having a working heater, once again!

  5. Oh that heater! I think they should replace it free of charge as it has been a problem from the start, with people tinkering with it every five minutes. I'm being stingy about having the heating on - a couple of hours in the evening, tops. I will go out in a few minutes to warm up in the car/shops! ;o)

    1. I am hoping that there is nothing seriously wrong with the heater and it can be easily fixed. But, a replacement heater, free of charge, would be lovely! Not counting on it, though. :)
Both my daughter and I like it on the warmer side, so, I have been using the heater and resigning myself to high heating bills. I like the idea of going to the shops to keep warm (and get a little exercise in, too, while walking around them). Are you shopping for Christmas gifts or are you all done with that?

  6. Oh gosh Bless. You have had a problem with this heater! I'm sorry another issue has come up. I really hope it's an easy fix (and that it's not too cold this weekend!)
I'm glad you purchased another portable heater.
What a cute gift for M to go along with the other things.
And a new rose bush. Yeah! What color will the flowers be? Do you know?
Coloring in the printing was a smart thing to do. I will remember that.

    1. This heater is really a "lemon" isn't it? I, too, hope it's an easy fix. So far, the weather has been fairly mild. Highs in the 60s, lows in the mid 40s. Not like the weather up where you live. The electric space heaters are doing a good job, keeping us warm as long as we are seated in front of them! :D
M had been admiring daughter's homemade ornaments, so she thought he might like the crocheted flowers. :) The rose is a lavender color, according to the label. I hope it grows well.
I must take a picture of the colored in labels; daughter did a good job. :)

  7. I hope you manage to get your heater sorted. My last one always seemed to be giving me some sort of bother, but thankfully the new one seems to work much better (famous last words!) Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules. I'm glad your new heater seems to be working better. A good working heater is very important, especially in colder areas where it snows, etc., isn't it?
