On Thursday

Pineapple Guava (Feijoa)

On Thursday, I had my follow up lab test at noon.  I should receive the test results sometime next week.

After I came home, I picked these pineapple guava (also known as feijoa) from the tree in the backyard.  Considering the fact that the tree was covered with flowers earlier in the year, there are only a few fruit, but, a few are better than none.  I shared the guavas with my daughter.

Pineapple Guava, Halved

I generally cut the guavas in half and scoop out the insides.  The outer peel is edible, but, it is generally not eaten.

There was a magnitude 7 earthquake in northern California, in the morning, with a tsunami warning issued for parts of Berkeley.  Daughter received the tsunami warning alert; her apartment building is just four blocks out of the tsunami warning area!  We were both glad that she was here, in southern California when the earthquake happened.

In the afternoon, new neighbor E sent over one of his workmen, R, to replace the damaged side door to my garage.  The "new" door is a metal exterior door which E had salvaged from another project.  He said that when he works on renovation projects, people usually don't want the old fixtures and he tries to salvage them instead of tossing them.  In fact, he said he had a salvaged sink and asked me if I needed a sink, but, I don't need a sink.  When I asked him how much he wanted for replacing my garage side door, he brushed it aside!  He said I could pay something to his worker, if I wanted to, and when I asked him about how much I should give, suggested an amount.  But, when I offered that amount to R, R declined to accept it!  I was overwhelmed by the generosity of these people and their kindness.

I also showed E some other repairs I wanted done inside the house and asked him to give me an estimate.  I have a 101 things I want done, but, I only showed him three of those things - a repair to the kitchen ceiling, some tiles that had come loose in the bathroom, and a door that came off one of the cabinets under the sink in that same bathroom.  My daughter fixed the door, when it first came off, but, it came off, again, last week, and the hinge itself needs replacing.

2024 was going to be the year when I worked on house repairs, but, it looks like 2025 might be the year in which to do them.

Later in the evening, I ordered some groceries and more household supplies, such as Dancer's dry food, dishwashing detergent, and toilet bowl cleaner.  Quite a number of items at the grocery store, including store brand bread, bagels, iceberg and romaine lettuce, and Dancer's dry food, were for available for delivery only, this week, and not for pick up.

I had leftover French toast for brunch and daughter finished the remaining half of her burrito from the previous day.  We had leftover turkey and pasta casserole for our dinner, followed by mandarins and a small piece of pecan pie, each.

On Thursday, I was grateful for:
- Access to medical care and the availability of diagnostic tests
- Helpful, kind, and generous neighbors
- Receiving a replacement side door to the garage
- Fresh fruit from the garden
- Daughter was down here when the earthquake hit northern California in the morning!

Thursday's joyful activity was spending time in the garden picking guavas.

Plans for Friday include picking up my groceries and maybe setting up the Christmas tree with M's help.

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

  1. You can't choose your neighbors, but you certainly have some good ones!

    1. I do, don't I? Even the party neighbors have their good points. :)

  3. I meant to say yesterday how much I liked the beaded ornament. "Little Bless", as she used to be called on-line, is very talented.
It must be a little annoying that some items at the store can only be obtained with delivery. I do wish grocery stores wouldn't complicate things. Being confronted with multiples is my pet peeve.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady.
Yes, it is a pity that some items are available for delivery only, but, I guess it makes sense that they would cater to those who pay delivery fees as opposed to those of us who choose free pick up. I'm also pretty sure that the stores are well stocked for shoppers who shop in person at the store. Maybe I should start shopping in person, but, I must admit that I've got used to the convenience of shopping online.
Multiples to qualify for a discount can be annoying, but, if it is something I use, I will buy multiples (in this week's groceries, it was a coupon for $0.50 off 3 cans of store brand tuna).

  4. I hope the test results come back good.
We were supposed to get a lot done to the house this year, but so far all we've managed is to get the roof redone. It was costly enough to make up for a bunch of small projects.

    1. Thank you, Sharon.
Having the roof replaced is a big project and very costly, isn't it?

  6. What a nice neighbor you have. I'm so glad for you that you now have the doors on the garage taken care of. You must be so happy.
And if he agrees to do some indoor work as well then, yes, 2025 might end up to be the year of house repairs!
I had a bit of work done this year. I had the west side of the house repainted including the masonry chimney painted and 3 window sills replaced due to rotting and painted. These are painters my one good friend uses and I really thought they did a good job with a fair price.
So I had them back just a few weeks ago to repaint my mudroom and also a few repair jobs in that room. They did a great job and I'm so happy.
That's a shame that some of your groceries are not available on pickup. Is that always the way for those items or just something that's happening this week?

    1. He is turning out to be a very nice and helpful neighbor! I hope he will be able to do the house repairs I want done. There is a whole long list of things to do, but, I will need to prioritize things.
You had quite a bit of work done on your place, too. I'm glad you found some good people todo the work.
There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for what is available for pick up or only for delivery. I think it depends on the store and their stock. Obviously, priority goes to those who shop in person and those who pay for the delivery membership. Pick up is free provided you buy a minimum $ amount per pick up and thus the store doesn't make extra money, so, we are lower on the priority scale!

  7. Very fortunate to get jobs done properly ... and for free. I hope he gives you a reasonable estimate for the other jobs and is able to do them soon. A few little treats are fine but I would feel guilty if it was every time (that might just be me).

    1. Yes, I, too, prefer to pay something when work is done, because I don't want to feel under obligation to anyone.
When I first approached my neighbor about the automatic garage door opener, I asked him if he could install it for me if I bought the replacement opener and how much would he charge. He said not to buy one, he can get a replacement from one of his current jobs as people were upgrading their garage doors and openers. He didn't tell me how much he would charge and when I asked him, again, he just sort of waved it aside.
The side door was something he offered to do. I had not asked him to replace it, but, when he was here to fix the garage door opener, he saw the warped side door and told me he has a replacement door and he will fix it. When I offered to pay, neither he, not his assistant, would accept it.
Well, Christmas is just around the corner and it's a good opportunity to thank my neighbor with a small gift as a token of my appreciation for being such a good neighbor. :)
