Trimming the Eucalyptus on Friday

The Eucalyptus Tree: Before

The picture was taken on Friday morning, around 7:15 a.m., just before the tree trimmers went to work on it.

Yes, they were here by 7:15 a.m.  I had gone to sleep after 4:00 a.m. and woke up when the alarm went off at 6:30 a.m.  It was one of the shortest nights of sleep I've had!  I thought I might take a nap, later, but, I didn't.

I was ready when the tree trimmers arrived; they were a team of two with one operating the cherry picker and the chainsaw and the other picking up the cut branches and feeding them to the chipper.  It took them one and a half hours to trim the tree, chip all the clippings, and clean up!  I persuaded them to take a little bit extra off the top and they were concerned about the shape of the tree, but, I told them I didn't care about the shape, I was only concerned that the tree might fall on the house if it ever toppled over!

The Eucalyptus Tree: After

I spent a good part of the rest of the morning and the early afternoon reading one of my library books.

Later in the afternoon, I took the decorations off the Christmas tree and packed them all up.  When M was here later in the evening, he took down the tree and stored it and the bins of decorations in the garage.  I then vacuumed the family room, broke some cobwebs along the ceiling, and put the furniture back in place.  The family room sofas are now in their usual L-shaped arrangement, which opens up the room.

I had planned to have egg salad sandwiches for brunch, but, I wanted a warm brunch, so I had the last piece of bacon with fried potato slices and a scrambled egg.  I had some apple juice with that.  Dinner was a cup of noodles soup.

Today, I am grateful for:

- The tree trimmers did a good job on the eucalyptus tree
- M helping with taking the Christmas tree down and the bins to the garage
- Phone calls and emails from friends
- My new robotic vacuum
- Library books to read

Today's joyful activity was getting the eucalyptus tree trimmed.

Plans for tomorrow include taking some packages that were delivered to my home to friend R, putting away laundry, and cleaning the kitchen.

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for Saturday?

  1. The tree trimmers certainly took a lot off the tree and did a good job. I'm glad M was able to help you store your Christmas tree and decorations for you and your your room is back to normal now.
I really must get my housework done this weekend.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; yes, I won't have to worry about trimming the tree again for another couple of years (I hope).
I'm very thankful that M can carry the items to the garage for me. If I had to do it, myself, I'd have to keep the bins in the garage and carry the items, a few at a time, to place in the bins, rather than carry the entire filled bin to the garage.
I, too, am glad that the room is back to normal. It feels a bit more spacious without the tree. :)
I hope you are able to get the housework done over the weekend, Eileen.

  2. Today we are going to celebrate a belated Christmas lunch with my cousin in Essex. A long journey, but it will be worth it

  3. We haven't had our trees trimmed for a few years, so it's probably time - but it's so expensive. Oh well, that's part of owning a home with trees. :)

    1. Yes, it's expensive to get the trees trimmed. I'm very glad that the power company trimmed the pine tree free of charge and M trimmed the bottlebrush tree as part of his regular work. :)

  4. After they trimmed the tree was the air heavy with the smell of eucalyptus? I love that scent.

    1. Yes, there was a lovely scent of eucalyptus in the air. I can't detect a lot of scents - for example, I don't smell lavender - but, I could smell the eucalyptus.

  5. Watching tree trimmers at work is always fascinating. You will feel better now that the tree is somewhat reduced. We had a huge amount of snow in the night and the plow guy came and it is still snowing! He will probably be back again before the day is out, or at least tomorrow morning. Needless to say we are staying home.

    1. They have it down to an art! I sat by the window and watched them the whole time! Yes, I'm glad the tree has been trimmed! It was starting to look a bit top heavy!
Sounds like your plow guy will have good business for the next couple of day! Staying home is the sensible thing to do under the circumstances!

  6. Well, it was a tree-centric day for you.
How nice to have the eucalyptus tree trimmed. Do the branches have that wonderful spa-like eucalyptus scent?
It’s always a good accomplishment to get the Christmas tree down and all the decorations packed away for another year.
Saturday morning was 58 degrees here in New York, but it has gotten colder throughout the day. Now the wind has picked up. I am glad I went out for a morning walk to enjoy the warmth while it lasted.
My husband and I went into the city to see a play at the Public Theater—Hell’s Kitchen. It’s a musical by Alicia Keys modeled on her own story of growing up in Manhattan. I loved it and it was so much fun to be out! We wore masks in the theater and on the subway. Unfortunately, Covid and colds abound.
    Wishing everyone a nice weekend!

    1. Ha, ha, yes! It was a very tree-centric day for me! :D Yes, the leaves do have a lovely scent - it's a faint scent for me because I seem to have a rather limited sense of smell (that doesn't extend to the litter box, unfortunately!) But, it's a very refreshing scent.
I'm glad it was warm enough for you to go for a walk. That was a good idea to wear masks when you went to the theater. Yes, Covid, colds, and other respiratory illnesses are on the rise! Best to take precautions and be safe.
Hope you, too, have a lovely weekend. :)

  7. That looks like a good job jobbed! I remember earlier before/after photos you posted and know how quickly the tree will spring back. Good idea to have some of the top growth removed while you have the chance. Long spells of dry weather like you have, followed by rain, can loosen the earth.
Gosh, sleep well tonight! With so little sleep I'd have had a migraine for sure!

    1. Yes, it was a good job jobbed! Last year's plentiful rain caused a big surge in the growth of the tree, I think. Eucalyptus trees tend to have shallow roots, so, strong winds can topple them quite easily if they have a heavy canopy. When I planted this tree, shortly after I bought the house, I didn't realize just how big it would grow!
I slept in, this morning and caught up on my sleep. :)

  8. That's quite the tree! How long has it been there? Reading your library book sounds like a lovely way to spend some of the day

    1. The tree is about 31 years old, now. I planted it soon after I bought the house. I planted two of them, actually, but, one died.
I spent practically all day, Saturday, reading (and finishing) my library book! It was lovely to spend the day reading! :)

  9. That's a big tree! Good for you for getting it trimmed. They did a good job. It seems like a pretty strong grower so I'm sure in no time the new growth will cover the top "haircut" spot lol
Reading through I see the air was fragrant with the smell of eucalyptus.
That must have been really nice.

    1. I think that it will grow back by the end of summer and you won't be able to see that bare top! It did smell good, but, it was also rather dusty, so I stayed indoors for the most part! I felt sorry for the bees and the hummingbirds though - the tree was flowering and they were enjoying the nectar, even while the trimmers were cutting down the branches! Afterwards, the bees and the birds (or, should that be the birds and the bees? :D) were wondering where their buffet went!
