Cloudy Wednesday and a Missing Watering Bag

New Street Trees on Friday

Remember this photo of the new street trees, planted on Friday morning?  Notice the green slow release watering bags, one per tree?

Well, this is what I noticed this morning (Wednesday):

Missing Watering Bag!

The flowering pear tree is missing its watering bag!  As far as I can recall, both bags were there when I checked on the trees on Monday.  I didn't check on them, yesterday (Tuesday).  And, today, one bag was missing!   Of course, of all the trees that were planted up and down the block, only one of my trees is missing its watering bag!  I called the City and filed a report that the watering bag is missing.  Maybe they will replace it?

The Remaining Watering Bag

The Australian Willow tree still has its watering bag.  If you look closely at the photo, you might notice the black line on the side - it is actually a zipper; I suppose it would be easy for someone to unzip the bag and pull it out.  I checked the price of these bags online and they sell from between $12 to $25 per bag, depending on who is selling it and size, etc.  Of course, I don't know for sure if it has been stolen, but, I don't think it unzipped itself and walked away or even that the wind blew it away!  It's really disheartening to think that someone would steal a watering bag when the City was trying to beautify the neighborhood.

I suppose I should be thankful that the entire tree is not missing?

It was a cloudy and cooler day, today.

M was here in the late morning to tend to the garden and he wanted to concentrate on the front garden, today.  We planted the jade plant (and some of its broken branches) and some aeonium cuttings.  Then, he raked the eucalyptus leaves and tidied up the front.

I had the robot vacuum cleaner help me vacuum the family room, today, and started cleaning the kitchen.  I did a load of dishes in the dishwasher and washed the rest of the items by hand.  Then, I wiped down the counters, the microwave, the stove top, and the fronts of drawers and lower cabinets, taking breaks for brunch, a cup of tea, and when I felt my hands cramping.  Still need to wash the upper cabinet doors, stove vent hood, etc., but, that's for another day.

For brunch, I made coconut roti and had two of them with katta sambol (a mixture of onion, pieces of Maldive fish - a type of cured, dried tuna - chili flakes, etc.) and one with peach jam.

Dinner was rice, mackerel curry, dhal, and peach chutney.  A piece of love cake for dessert.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Whoever took the watering bag, left the tree in place!
- Only one watering bag was taken (so far, anyway)
- M's help with the garden
- Working appliances
- What I was able to accomplish in terms of housecleaning

Today's joyful activity was gardening with M.

Plans for tomorrow include continuing with cleaning the kitchen.

How was your Wednesday?  What are your plans for Thursday?

  1. Isn't it disheartening that someone should stoop so low (and literally) to steal a watering bag. You did the right thing in reporting it's loss to the City and I hope that they will replace it. Would M water the tree for you in the meantime do you think? It would be such a shame for the tree to die. Things like this make me feel very sad.

    1. Yes, Eileen; it is very disheartening and makes me angry, too! Yes, we will water the tree and try to keep it alive, even if the City doesn't replace the bag (they might not have the budget to do so and what's to prevent someone from stealing it, again?)

  2. Good morning, Bless! I enjoyed a lovely catch-up on all your posts, yesterday, but i didn't have chance to comment properly. I have loved seeing all the photographs, especially of the delicious food (I will definitely be trying the potato salad recipe) and of course your beautiful plants - you would understand why if you could see all of mine just now.
The parkway looks very smart with the new trees. It will be so nice to watch them grow and flourish and hopefully they will help to provide some much needed shade during the hotter months. It is a shame someone saw fit to remove one of the watering bags. I hope it will be replaced. X

    1. Hi Jules! Don't worry about not commenting; I know you are busy. Yes, it is a shame about the missing watering bag. :(

  3. I can only guess that taking the water bag was a prank, because what are they going to do with it, anyway? I don't understand people sometimes.

    1. I suppose whoever took the bag will be using it for one of their own trees? I, too, don't understand people, at times.

  4. That's really upsetting. With all the cameras around, maybe it was caught on tape. I haven't seen those watering bags where I live. I hope the trees do well and establish deep roots.

    1. It is upsetting, isn't it? Well, at least I notified the City and it's up to them to replace the bags or not. In the meantime, I will water the trees when I water the front garden and hopefully, they will grow well. :)

  5. If only people would realize that when they steal public property they are stealing from all of us, including themselves, because they reduce the benefit of the communal environment and dishearten others.

    1. Yes; unfortunately, they don't think like that. There's a lot of stealing and thieving going on here; almost every day, on the news, they show people breaking into stores and looting. As I said, at least they didn't steal the tree (or cut it down!)

  6. Oh what a shame someone stole the water bag! Some people have no shame. It's kind and of you to water the tree. I hope they both grow big and healthy!

    1. Yes, it is a real shame, but, at least they left the tree in place! I will definitely water it (and the other one, too, if needed).

  8. How sad. It hardly took any time at all for that to happen. Have any more disappeared meanwhile? And have they removed the ties securing the tree to the stakes too? Poor tree - but on the upside, it has you to care for it so it will soon realise how lucky it is to be planted outside your house rather than somewhere else along the street.

    1. No, it didn't take long at all, did it? So far, mine's the only tree missing its watering bag! Yes, I will continue to care for it and, hopefully, it'll grow well.

  9. Oh gosh, what a shame that someone took that bag.
Like you said, I'm glad they left the tree!
I'm sure you and M will look after the poor thirsty tree.
You did a lot of cleaning in your kitchen last week. I bet it was all sparkly. :)

    1. Yes, well, they stole the other bag, too, over the weekend! :( BUT, the trees are still there! Yay! I watered them, today.
I'm on a mission in the kitchen! I've been cleaning the upper cabinets, taking things off the shelves, washing the shelves and the doors, etc. Very slow going, though (partly because I can't quite reach the tops of the cabinets, even when standing on the second step of my two tiered step stool!)

  10. It is a shame when things get stolen...I hope that whoever did it stole the bag because they REALLY needed to sell it for money, and not just because they were greedy. I'm glad you're able to water the tree though. Love FDxx

    1. Yes, FD; but, unfortunately, a lot of things seem to be just taken, these days! I'm just glad they restrained themselves to just the watering bags! M and I will keep the trees watered, and, hopefully, they will grow and flourish.
