One Week Into the New Year

Dancer is Missing Daughter Already

Daughter went back to Berkeley today.  We had a fairly leisurely morning as her flight was in the early afternoon.  She had packed her suitcase, last night, but, today, she put in the food I gave her to take back with her - some chicken curry, some cashew curry, some pol sambol (coconut sambol), the kuftha that neighbor S had given (all of which were frozen so they could be taken in her hand luggage) and her share of the love cake.  I took her to the airport around 12:30 p.m. and dropped her off.  Her flight was delayed a little bit, but, she boarded her plane without any difficulties and had a safe, if turbulent, flight (it was very windy, today).

Afterwards, I came home, served a plate of food and a piece of love cake and some of the other desserts and took them over to friend R, along with some lemons from the garden.  It was a quick curbside drop off.

Then, I came home, took the kitchen compost to the compost pile, took the kitchen and bathroom trash to the trash bin, and took the big pan we used to mix the love cake batter back to the garage, where it is stored when not in use.

Brunch was an egg salad sandwich and I had a konde kavum (they were pictured in the platter of food I received from my friend S on New Year's Day) for dessert.

After brunch, I relaxed, replied to blog comments, got caught up on some blogs (still need to catch up on a few other blogs), chatted on the phone with former neighbor T and with friend R (it was too windy and chilly to chat with her when I dropped off the food), and watched the evening news.

Daughter called after she reached her apartment and we chatted on the phone while she unpacked her suitcase.  She didn't say so, but, I think she was feeling a bit homesick!

Dinner has been a bit snacky - some cheese crackers, a bowl of sauteed garbanzo beans, the last of the watalappan (a jaggery and coconut milk pudding), some yogurt and treacle, etc.

Later in the evening, daughter and I video chatted for a few minutes.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Daughter had a safe flight back
- and a safe rest of the journey to her apartment
- I had a safe drive to the airport and back and to friend R's and back
- Last night and today's winds didn't do any damage to my garden (lots of downed trees in my area, according to the news)
- My electricity stayed on (several power outages in my area due to the high winds)

Today's joyful activity was taking a plate of food to friend R.

Plans for tomorrow include making a start on putting the house back in order!

How was your Sunday?  What are your plans for the week ahead?

  1. I can well imagine your daughter feeling a little homesick as you have spent a wonderful time together over the last three weeks. Poor Dancer wondering where she has gone again. Hopefully it won't be too long before she visits again.

    1. We did have a lovely visit and yes, I think there will be another visit in March (provided she can take some time off). I know, poor Dancer doesn't know what is going on! But, he'll be OK. :)

  2. This post up showed up as "Dancer is Missing.. " and I was quite worried until I opened it and read the rest of the sentence! Glad your daughter is home safe. I guess you're missing her as I miss mine. Having them with us for a while always leaves a gap when they go, doesn't it? Sunday was very quiet. Today I was at the dentist again. He thinks the tooth is sorted now, and didn't charge me because the filling he put in before Xmas fell out so quickly. But right now it's very cold and I'm not allowed a hot drink for 2 hours.

    1. No, Dancer is not missing; just missing one of his favorite humans! I do miss having my daughter at home, but, I am used to being on my own, too. :)
I'm glad your dentist didn't charge you for this visit and I hope the new filling doesn't fall out! Wrap up warmly and sit in front of the heater until you can drink something hot, again! Hope the two hours go quickly!

  3. I bet Dancer is not the only one missing your daughter. You all always seem to really enjoy your time together.

    1. Yes, we do enjoy our time together (maybe we enjoy it more because we know it is for a limited time only?) and I, too, miss her when she goes back. But, we usually call each other once a day (after she finishes work for the day) and we video chat each night. Besides, there's always the next visit to look forward to (not quite sure when that next visit will be, but, she's hoping to visit for a few days in early March).

  4. Lovely photo of Dancer. I am glad you had a good visit with your daughter over the holidays. Would it be possible for her to transfer closer to "home" for work?

    1. Thank you, Mary-Lou. Yes, we had a lovely visit and did quite a lot of the things we had wanted to do. The one thing we didn't do was have a "paint night" where we painted together. But, we might do that while we are video chatting, one of these evenings. :)
There are always possibilities of her moving closer to home, although she might have to look for another job, unless her work place is willing to let her work remotely full time (currently, there is a requirement that they need to be at the office, or at a satellite office, in person, at least two days a week). There is also the possibility of me moving up there, too, although she doesn't want me to sell the house in order to do so! As long as my health allows me to live on my own, I will continue to do so, but, I am a realist and I know that at some point in the future, I might have to find an assisted living facility. :)

  5. Poor Dancer, he does look like a sad kitty sleeping his woes away. Tell him Auntie Bushlady recommends he asks for an extra helping of tuna!
What a good idea to have the food frozen so it could go in your daughter's carry-on. She will have some meals to enjoy without having to cook straight away.

    1. He does look sad, doesn't he? He doesn't need any encouragement to ask for extra helpings of tuna! LOL! He is given plenty as it is, because we want him to gain a little more weight! But, I opened a can of cod, sole, and shrimp pate for him, last night and he's enjoying that, right now. :)
Yes, frozen food is allowed in carry-on luggage. Things like jars of jam or peanut butter must be put in checked luggage. This way, she only has to cook some rice and she'll have enough food to last her for at least a couple of days, until she has time to go grocery shopping and cook.

    1. Thank you, Andrea. Yes, we both wanted her to stay for another week, at least! But, she had a safe flight back and I'm thankful for that. :)

    1. Thank you, Celie. Yes, we are looking forward to her next visit, hopefully, in March. :) Today, Dancer got back at me for daughter being gone - he left something just outside the litter box for me to clean up! :p

  8. I'm glad your daughter's flight went well and she got back home again. It's such a relief when they do arrive. I suppose it will take a few days to get back to 'normal'. It's lovely there is video chatting these days.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. Yes, it's a relief to know that the journey went well and she reached her apartment, safely! It is definitely going to take a few days to get back to normal, but, video chatting is lovely. :)

  9. I am glad your daughter's trip home was a safe and uneventful one. Especially after the situation this week with the door "plug" falling out.
I'm so glad no one was injured, or worse, with that happening.

We are having another very strong storm with high winds and lots of rain moving through our area last night and this morning.
After we just had the same sort of thing on Tuesday night.
My husband said all the states were under a sever weather warning of one form or another yesterday.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Yes, that plane door falling out in mid-air was very scary and troubling. Plus, there have been quite a few other accidents and mishaps with air travel these past few weeks. And daughter is still very nervous about air travel. But, fortunately, nothing bad happened! I keep the altar lights on for her from the time I drop her off at the airport until she calls to let me know that she has arrived safely at her apartment. Then, I say a prayer of gratitude and turn the lights off.

I've been hearing on the news about the winter storm you are experiencing. I hope you don't have any damage to your property from the winds and snow and that you are staying warm and safe at home.
