Sunny on Tuesday

Crocosmia Flower Spike in Bud

The crocosmia plants are flowering.  I've read that they are supposed to be summer flowering plants, but, in my garden, they almost always flower in January and February.

Crocosmia Flowers

Tuesday was sunny and much warmer, with an afternoon high of 69F.  It was a bit windy, too, but, it was not a strong wind.

I spent a fairly relaxed morning, doing my usual morning things, bringing in the emptied trash cans, answering blog comments, etc.  Thank you for all your comments.

The library had sent an email notifying me that the two books I requested were waiting for me, so, in the afternoon, I went to the library.  I returned one of the other library books I had borrowed earlier (I decided to hold on to the decluttering book for a bit longer) and borrowed the two new books.

The library is located next to a fast food place.  Before I went to the library, I checked the coupons I had received from them and debated if I wanted to buy a hamburger from them.  But, then, I decided I didn't want to get any fast food, today.  Instead, after I came home, I fried some frozen breaded shrimp I had in the freezer, cut up a potato to make some fries, and had them with some of my peach chutney for my brunch (a very late brunch, eaten at 4:30 p.m.)  I ended up not eating many of the fries, but, I will reheat them in the toaster oven and have them another day.  Probably not the healthiest meal, but, I didn't buy fast food and I continued to eat what I had in the freezer and pantry.  Dinner, if you are wondering, was a slice of multi-grain bread, toasted, with a scrambled egg.  I had some grapes and then, some yogurt with granola.

After sorting through my bathroom cabinet, yesterday, I decided to check the cabinet in the second bathroom.  My daughter uses that bathroom when she comes home and the cabinet was mostly full of her lotions and potions.  I didn't touch those, at all.  But, up on the very top shelf, I saw an unopened box of the hair dye my mother used to use.  My mother died in February 2006, and she stopped dyeing her hair a few years before she died, but, that little box of dye was still sitting there!  I know I've cleaned that cabinet, before, but, I guess I overlooked the box of hair dye!  I tossed it, today.

I called my tax preparer's office, today, and booked my appointment with her.  I scheduled it for mid-March, which should give me plenty of time to collect all the documents (haven't received any of the statements, etc., yet) and get everything to her in early March.  Later, I chatted with friend R.

Today, I am grateful for:

- A sunny and relatively warm day
- The car started (it's been a week since I last started or drove it)
- A safe drive to the library and back
- Being able to borrow books from the library
- Phone calls and emails with friends and video chatting with my daughter

Today's joyful activity was a trip to the library to borrow new books to read!

Plans for tomorrow include tending to the garden with M and reading!

How was your Tuesday?  What are your plans for Wednesday?

  1. Your crocosmia flowers are very pretty.
That must have been very poignant for you finding a box of your late mother's hair dye. it's easy to overlook things.
I'm hoping the weather will be better today so I can go out. We have had two bad storms in quick succession, luckily no damage or power cuts here.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; yes, it was poignant. My daughter said she had seen the box of dye there, but, she didn't say anything because she thought I was keeping it as a memento!
Oh, I do hope your weather improves and you and Tilly can go out and enjoy it.

  2. How lovely to have the crocosmia plants blooming now. In our region the Hummingbirds are crazy for these flowers. Glad to hear you had the resolve to toss the hair dye. Seems your weather is currently giving you a nice blend of rain & sunshine - perfect for the garden & new trees.

    1. The crocosmia is providing a nice touch of color to the garden. Yes, they are a favorite of the hummingbirds. :)
Thank you, Mary-Lou; I had tried to give the hair dye to a family friend, back when my mother died, but, she said she didn't use that brand of dye. I honestly don't know why I didn't toss it back then, but, anyway, it is gone, now. Better late than never, I suppose.
It was a cloudy day, today, but, the forecast calls for sunshine and a warming trend over the weekend. Looking forward to that!

  3. I know finding that hair dye would have brought out all kinds of emotions in me- both happy and sad and a feeling of silliness that I hadn't noticed it for all of those years. I am not familiar with Crocosmia, but it looks like it would grow in my climate. Do you find that it's a plant that spreads?

    1. I did feel both a pang of sadness and regret, as I had tried to give the dye to a friend, shortly after my mother died, but, my friend said she didn't use that brand. I really don't know why I continued to keep it, but, I guess I didn't want to "waste" the dye. I read somewhere that clutter is delayed decisions and, in this case, that is true.
I think crocosmia would grow well there. I've read that some varieties of crocosmia can be invasive; I don't know exactly which variety is growing in my garden as it was already here when I bought the house, but, in the 30 years I've been here, it has not spread that much. In fact, I have dug up some of the bulbs and replanted them elsewhere in the garden to encourage them to spread!

  4. I love your little flowering plant. It looks so delicate.
Isn't it funny the things you overlook? I think that's why I check and double check when decluttering. Sometimes, I overlook things and other times I'm not ready to get rid of something. On a second look things look a little clearer!

    1. Thank you, Sharon.
Yes, seems like I hold on to the silliest things! I had honestly forgotten about this box of hair dye - it is a small box, much smaller than the usual boxes of hair dye one sees in most stores. One needs to go back and take a second and even a third look, sometimes. :)

  6. I love the crocosmia flowers. Your brunch meal sounds a lot nicer than a mere takeout hamburger!
I agree with Eileen that it must have been poignant for you to find that hair dye. Were you a little bit sad? But your mother was probably thinking of you!

    1. Thank you, Anonymous, whoever you are! I like to keep a few frozen food items on hand to make a quick, different/special meal for those occasions when I feel like having fast food/take out as a treat.
Yes, it was a bit of an emotional tug to find the hair dye, especially this close to the anniversary of her death. But, maybe she was telling me it was time to let go of a few more of her things. :)

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. One never knows what might be lurking in a cabinet, somewhere! :D
Good job making the tax appointment. Tax deadlines tend to sneak up on one!

  8. That's interesting that your crocosmia blooms this time of year. So it doesn't bloom at all in the summer, just mid-winter?
I just got my first tax documents in the mail today, 1/29 so I bet yours will be coming. I got all 3 that I wait for all together today.
I've ordered my turbo tax CD that I use to prepare my taxes and that's due to arrive Wednesday. It will be tax time for me then :)
My husband mentioned that the IRS wasn't allowing any electronic filing of returns until around the 20th? I think that's what he said.
    That's interesting.

    1. Yes, the crocosmia blooms now and the plants are all but dried up by summer. I wait until the leaves turn brown and then, have M cut them off
I received most of my tax documents last week, but, there is one that will be coming in around the end of February (according to the email that was sent). I hadn't heard about the IRS not allowing any electronic filing of returns until later. Maybe you can check their website. I know they've declared that the filing season starts today (Jan. 29) and they are having a pilot program to enable people to file online directly with them.
