On Saturday

Serrano Chilies

On Saturday, I slept in!  I slept for almost 10 hours and made up for the lack of sleep the night before.  After I woke up, had my cup of tea, and said my morning prayers, I read my library book for a bit. Then, I walked around the garden and picked almost all the chilies that were on the Serrano chili plant (there were two small chilies still on the plant and I left them to see if they'll get bigger).  I will add these to the chilies that are in the freezer.

In the afternoon, I drove to see friend R, to give her the packages that had come to my house for her.  It was another curb-side visit and we both wore masks.

After I came home, I continued to read my library book.

Cousin V called me in the evening and we had a chat.  She said she accidentally broke the jar of jam I had given her, while trying to open it!  So, I told her I'll bring her another jar of jam and some lemons from my tree, later in the week.

Later, I video chatted with my daughter, who is house sitting for her former supervisor while she's out of the country!  The house is up in the hills and daughter said she saw two deer in the driveway, when she went to collect the mail!

I hand washed another of my wool sweaters I had knitted.  That's the only problem with wool sweaters - they have to be hand washed and kept flat to dry.

Brunch was an egg salad sandwich.  Dinner was fried breaded shrimp (from the freezer), leftover rice, leftover dhal/lentils, and peach chutney.

On Saturday, I was grateful for:

- Being able to sleep in
- Chilies from the garden
- A quick visit with friend R
- A safe drive there and back
- The car started (hadn't started it since last Sunday)

Saturday's joyful activity was reading!

Plans for Sunday include doing all the things I didn't do on Saturday because I read instead!

How is your weekend coming along?

  1. I'm glad you were able to catch up on your sleep. Sleep is so important.
Deer are regular sights around here - not just in the woods any more, and they love to eat whatever it is you're trying to grow. :(

    1. Thank you, June; I need to get more sleep! I know I don't get enough (average 5-6 hours per night).
I remember you mentioning that deer ate some of the plants in your garden, including an apple tree you planted?

    2. Several branches were broken off our new apple tree by the deer rubbing against it.

    3. Oh, I see! They used your apple tree as a scratching post! I hope the tree survived?

  3. Your serrano chilis are nice. I have some in the freezer, but they were purchased at Stop & Shop which is considerably less exciting than picking them from the yard!
Doesn’t it feel wonderful to catch up on sleep? I usually have 2 dogs milling about waiting for me to take them outside and then get breakfast. For now, there’s also a rather vocal cat added to the mix. But, sometimes, they unexpectedly stay in their warm beds and allow me to linger in mine. Bliss!
We had a little snow this afternoon, just enough to be pretty without accumulating on the ground.
It’s a quiet Sunday. I’m going to watch another episode of a TV show on Amazon Prime—“Astrid.” It’s French. A worker at the criminal records library has a perfect memory and is on the autism spectrum. She and a commander solve a case together and the two become friends. I really enjoy the show. I’m watching with subtitles. I thought my comprehension would be much better than it is, but I seem to have forgotten most of the French I ever learned. 😬

    1. Thank you, Taconix. I have had a wonderful harvest, this year, from my one chili plant!
I am still a bit sleep deprived, but, that's my own fault for not going to sleep earlier! I have a very vocal cat, too, who lets me know when he wants breakfast! As if he doesn't have access to his kibble 24 hours of the day! And if I ignore his demands, he will eat some kibble, then, he'll come near my bed and throw up the kibble! *groan*
Glad you had just a little snow to make the outdoors look pretty. :)
I hope you enjoy your quiet Sunday. I believe that TV show comes on my public TV channel, but, I haven't watched it. I'm not much into detective stories. Keep watching the show and maybe your French will come back to you! :)

  4. You clearly needed the solid sleep! Our bodies let us know when rest is necessary. Your chilis look good! You got quite a lot from just one plant. I'm staying inside today, too cold out! I'm sorting kitchen utensils and odds and ends. I really need to do a good clear out!

    1. I do need more sleep, Celie. I have to train myself to get to bed, earlier!
I'm really pleased with the chili harvest, this year! I planted it under the peach tree, in a shadier spot than were I had the previous chili plant and while the plant didn't grow as big, it produced larger chilies and they didn't get scorched by the sun!
Good luck with sorting the kitchen utensils, etc. I need to do a good clear out in the kitchen, myself! I received some new kitchen utensils from a friend as holiday gifts and now I have duplicates and triplicates!

  5. You got a lovely crop of chillies from that plant. As for wool sweaters, at least they don't have static cling which is what happens with one particular thin synthetic sweater I have. I love the style but detest the way it behaves.

    1. I did get a nice crop of chillies from my plant and I shared some of it with neighbor S, yesterday. :) Static cling can be annoying! I've read that a light dusting of talcum powder can help or maybe, rubbing a dryer sheet on the garment might help?

  6. I'm one who doesn't sleep too well and the resulting tiredness during the day is a problem. A good night's sleep is so important. I have a worrying three weeks ahead with overnight roadworks happening, I'll write a blog post about it later today.

    1. I'm sorry you have problems sleeping at night, Eileen, and I hope that the roadworks don't disturb your sleep even more! Maybe you can take some afternoon naps? Or wear earplugs?

  7. Yes, you were tired from getting up for the tree guys. I was surprised when you said you didn't even take a nap that day. You must've been exhausted by the end of the day.
What a nice opportunity your daughter has to house sit up in the hills.
Does she feel like it's a vacation?

    1. Yes, I was tired! My daughter is enjoying the extra space, the full kitchen (as opposed to her very basic kitchenette along one wall, in her studio apartment), and the pretty views (you can see SF and the Golden Gate Bridge from one of the windows, she says). Oh, and the morning sun coming in through the bedroom window - her apartment has just one window which faces north and it's in the living room part of the apartment.
