January Grocery Shopping Part 2 and Meal Plan

I picked up an order of groceries on Monday.  I mostly needed tuna for Dancer (he's back to refusing his canned cat food).  But, I also bought a few other items of groceries for myself, partly to qualify for free pick up and partly to take advantage of some sales, even though I had said I will be eating mostly from the freezer and pantry this month.

I bought:

3 Bananas, 1.02 lb. @ $0.68/lb. = $0.70

1 lb. ground beef (80/20), reg. price $6.29, with digital coupon = $3.74

3 cans tuna, store brand, reg. price $1.29@, on sale for $1@, with $0.50 off 3 cans coupon $0.83@ = $2.50

Deli meats/cold cuts, roast beef, 7 oz., reg. price $6.49, on sale with coupon = $3.49
Deli meats/cold cuts, uncured honey ham, 9 oz., reg price $6.49, on sale with coupon = $3.49

1 loaf multi grain bread, reg. price $3.49, on sale with coupon = $2.99

1 box cereal, 13.5 oz., reg. price $4.99, free with "best customer" coupon = $0

My grocery total = $16.91

In addition, I bought 15 cans of tuna, on sale for $1@ for Dancer = $15

My total order total (with Dancer's tuna) = $31.91

Meal Plans for January Week 3

Brunches: Cheese and spinach burek (Monday), cold cuts sandwiches, scrambled eggs and fried potatoes, leftovers

Dinners:

- Cold cuts sandwiches, Armenian potato salad (Monday)

- Spaghetti with meat sauce (will use pasta and canned pasta sauce from the pantry, some vegetables from the freezer, and the ground beef purchased on Monday)

- Mackerel curry and coconut roti (will use canned mackerel from the pantry, leftover coconut milk from the almsgiving that's in the fridge and leftover grated coconut from the freezer)

- Mackerel curry, moringa curry (from the freezer), and rice with peach chutney

- Soup?

- Leftovers

Of course, this meal plan is subject to change!

If anyone is wondering about the burek and the potato salad - my neighbor S brought over dinner and dessert on Sunday:

Sunday Dinner Compliments of Neighbor S

S made the potato salad, her sister-in-law made the cheese and spinach phyllo pastry and rice pudding,  her mother made the potato kuftha, her friend made the cheese and spinach burek, and a niece made the sour cream and gelatin dessert with the canned cherry sauce.  I gave S some love cake and Serrano chilies.

  1. They cook a lot of S's house! And how nice that they share. I was curious about the Armenian potato salad, so I looked it up. Looks good, but I would leave out the pepper flakes.

    1. They often have family gatherings over the weekend and S will usually share with me. Her potato salad had a lot of fresh mint and I think there might have been some tomato paste. Yes, there were red pepper flakes, too. I will ask her for the recipe and post it.

  2. The dinner and treats from your neighbor look enticing! I grocery shopped Sunday; I usually go on Saturday. I spent a little over $150. You do very well with your shopping budget. I bought more meat than usual. That drives up the cost, for sure. I saw a nice filet of cod marked down, which I served Sunday night. Delicious. I also bought salmon ($7.99# sale). We ate half last night and will finish it tonight. Ground beef was $2.88# with a digital coupon, but it was only the family-sized packages. I plan to put together a meat loaf and some burgers this morning , then freeze them for my husband to cook when I travel to Florida next week. Win-win—I get to be warm and husband gets to eat beef to his heart’s content.
We had a little snow overnight here (New York City), but it’s not too bad. Husband shoveled before work; he leaves around 7 am. I will shovel the light accumulation as soon as it stops, or maybe even sweep it.
I hope to walk to the post office later to mail son-in-law’s birthday card and a thank-you note to my mother-in-law. If it’s icy, I’ll wait until tomorrow. 😬

    1. My neighbor and her family are all good cooks! I get to try delicious food that I normally might not get to try!
Sounds like you got some very good deals at your grocery store! Salmon rarely goes on sale for less than $9.99/lb. at the store from which I order (they are a bit pricy, but, they offer free curb-side pick up) and that's an excellent price for ground beef. Oh, enjoy your trip to Florida! Be careful on those icy roads!

  3. I was wondering, what size do your cans of Mackerel come in?

    1. They come in 15 oz/425g net wt. cans, in brine. According to the can, a serving size is 1/3 cup (85g) drained and there are about 3.5 servings per can. I don't discard the brine when I make a curry; I add tomatoes, onions, curry leaves, curry powder, chilies, etc. to the brine, cook those for a bit, and then, I add the mackerel and the coconut milk and cook that for a bit. have not tried the mackerel filets in oil which come in a smaller can as I don't think they will make a good curry.

    2. We only get tiny cans locally and I thought you must have been buying something much larger!

    3. I see. I checked the price on our cans and they have gone up to $3.99 (they used to be $1.99 when I last bought them!)

  4. I am impressed at how you manage to shop so frugally and get such good deals! Your neighbor and her family sure cook a lot, and how nice of them to share with you. I need to make soup soon. Classes start on Monday next week, and I'll need lunches.

    1. Thank you, Celie. I try to shop the sales and take full advantage of coupons and deals. :)
Yes, S and family are so kind and generous; they always think of me!
Sounds like you'll be busy the rest of this week preparing for classes starting next week! Hope the semester ahead goes well!

  5. I hope Dancer gets back on his normal food soon! Maybe he's holding out for that Tuna treat lol.

We actually did a pick-up food order today as we didn't want to take baby into the store, but needed food. It was very quick and efficient.

    1. Thank you, Sharon; he go through phases, but, because he's lost so much weight, we are indulging him and giving him whatever he consents to eat!
Good idea not to take baby into the store! I like being able to order and pick up groceries! Very convenient!

  7. You are all stocked up with Dancer's tuna now and you got a few things for yourself as well. A successful shopping trip for sure.
What kind of cereal did you get? Nosy nosy, aren't I?
I'm always curious about free cereal lol. Was that particular coupon just for cereal?
Neighbor S' food gift looks particularly appealing. I too was curious about the potato salad and I see Live and Learn was as well.
I love anything with potatoes :)

    1. I'm trying to dole out the tuna to him, but, he's not letting me! He keeps bugging me for more! I told him I'm going to rename him Oliver! :D
I got a box of Kellogg's frosted flakes! The coupon was for a free box of that particular cereal! It's not something I would normally buy, but, I won't turn down a free box of cereal. I will probably donate it to the temple (maybe they can pass it along to a family with children) or give during the post office food drive (usually takes place in May). One time, I received a free coupon for a Betty Crocker pound cake mix and that's still in my pantry.
S's potato salad has a different taste, but, I like it. I'm going to ask her for her recipe to share in a blog post.
