Yesterday, Monday, July 4, I put in an order for groceries; I wanted more bread and bananas and I also wanted to take advantage of a couple of items that were on sale with digital coupons, etc. Today, I picked up the groceries.
I bought:
4 bananas (1.61 lbs.) @ $.65/lb. = $1.05
1 x 16 oz. bag store brand coleslaw mix (reg. $1.79; on sale with digital coupon) = $.99
1 tray (5.28 lbs.) chicken thighs (reg. price $2.49/lb.; on sale @ $.99/lb.) = $5.23
1 x 2lb. bag (8 count) frozen beef burger patties (reg. price $9.99; on sale) = $8.99
5 x 18 oz. (@5 count) hot Italian sausages, (reg. price $5.99@; on sale with digital coupon for $2.99@) = $14.95*
1 bag (32 oz.) frozen pink salmon fillets (skinless, boneless) = $14.49
1 loaf (20 oz.) sandwich bread = $1.79
1 box (5.82 oz.) chocolate wafers (reg. price $1.19) = $1.00
Total = $48.49
Original item total = $73,40
Saved with sales/coupons = -$24.91
July grocery budget = $100 + $24.57 carried over from June = $124.57
Balance left in the budget = $124.57 - $48.49 = $76.08
* Each digital coupon can be used up to 5 times in one transaction and I used the one for the sausages the maximum number of times. I don't eat a lot of sausages, maybe a couple a month, BUT, I wanted to stock up on them because I don't know how much longer they will go on sale at this price and will continue to be available for curb-side pick up. The mild versions are available only for delivery now and (and in-store shopping, too, I suppose), but not for curb-side pick up! I have enough sausages now to last me for the rest of the year, probably, and to share with my daughter, too!
Likewise the frozen salmon - this is the first time I'm buying this, but, fresh salmon is selling for $9.99/lb. on sale, this week (reg. price $13.99). I want to give this a try and thought I should buy it now, before the price increases!
As always, I am grateful to be able to afford to buy groceries and to stock up, for the availability of food, for curbside pick up, for sales and coupons, for pleasant store workers.
Have you shopped for groceries in July, yet? Are you finding good sales?
You do well with the savings and you do right to stock up when items are on offer. I have a grocery delivery arriving today and finding offer prices much higher than they were just a few months ago. I read an article yesterday about the price of Lurpak butter being so expensive in the UK, I'd already noticed and will look for a cheaper alternative, one supermarket had even put a security tag on the tubs!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Eileen. I am grateful that I am able to stock up when things go on sale (or offer, as you say). I hope you receive all the items you ordered and there aren't any substitutions. Store brand butter was on offer with a digital coupon for $2.79/lb. and I debated whether to buy some, but, I have some butter in the freezer and I thought I'll hold out to see if they go on sale again at $2.50/lb. I have a feeling that they might not! Good luck with finding a cheaper alternative to your butter!
DeleteThat is great shopping. When you see a sale, you have to go for it these days. I bet you get some great meals from that food and the salmon was a good find.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lyssa. I cooked the tray of chicken thighs, this evening, making a curry; there were 10 pieces and I froze 8 pieces (4 packages with 2 pieces each) and kept 2 pieces for use this week. It's not exactly batch cooking, but, having the frozen curries on hand will be convenient.
DeleteI try to stick up on the items I know I will eat when I see them at a good price ... something that's happening less and less frequently now. You did well with the sausages and the salmon. I've been buying bags of frozen fillets of fish and it's always been fine. It works out cheaper per portion too.
ReplyDeleteOne really has to stock up when there is a sale and then, eat from the pantry and freezer to keep the costs down. I was very pleased with being able to buy the sausages at that price. I think the salmon was a good buy, too. I've bought frozen pollock fillets, previously, and have found them to be good, too. But, when I last checked on that item, it said for "delivery only"! :( Way too many things are being labeled as "delivery only" these days! Pick up is free (with a minimum purchase) but delivery has a fee.
DeleteYou did really well with your coupons on the 5 packs of sausages and you got some other good prices too.
ReplyDeleteYou continue to do well staying within your monthly budget.
I was thrilled to buy salmon at $7.99 lb on Saturday - a super price as our normal price is $14.99. I bought a bit extra and we had it for 3 days lol
I have been thinking about trying the frozen salmon too so I will be curious to see what you think. So your 32 oz bag comes out to $7.25 a pound which is good and might be the way to go if you (and your daughter) enjoy it.
Thank you, Debra. I'm pleased with the grocery spending, so far! You got a good deal on the salmon! The "sale" price for fresh salmon is $9.99, this week! I was happy to get the frozen salmon, which seems to be a bargain. I usually get their frozen pollock fillets, but, the 2 lb. bag of pollock has not only gone up in price from $7.99 (I used to buy it when it went on sale for $6.99) to $9.99, it is also available for delivery only! I do not like this new trend of making certain items available for delivery only!
DeleteI went down to the stores on Monday afternoon and discovered that after our long (July 1) weekend everyone else must have been shopping, too. One store only had grape tomatoes and so I looked in the other store and there were not tomatoes at all! I guess I should go back down today but I'm not keen on grocery shopping!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you found the store shelves a bit depleted after the long holiday weekend, Bushlady. Hope you'll find the shelves full on your next trip to the stores.
DeleteI would have done exactly what you did with the sausages. My freezer is a testament to that type of thinking.
ReplyDeleteYes, one has to take advantage of a good sale to stock up, provided the finances allow one to do so. The store seems to be making more and more things available for delivery, only; the mild sausages weren't available for pick up.
