Almost Scammed on Thursday!

Yikes!

This was the message that popped up on my laptop screen this evening, when I went to search something!  First, I received a message saying there was a delay in uploading the information due to the volume of visitors to that website and to click on "Continue".  That should have been my first clue that something was wrong, but, like an idiot, I clicked on it and this message appeared!  Oh, no!  There was a female voice playing a message over and over again saying my computer has been disabled and there is a security threat, that I should not turn the computer off, that doing so would compromise my information, data, etc., and that I should call the Microsoft security at the number provided!  Oh, my!  Instead, I call my personal tech support - my daughter!  I sent her the above picture and read out what it said.  She told me to turn the computer off, wait a minute, and turn it back on, which I did and which cleared the message!  Whew!  Thank goodness!  What a blessing to have her calmly guide me through that mishap!  I told her that if she had not been able to help me, I would have taken the computer to the computer store and asked them to help!  She said they would have turned it off and turned it back on (and probably charged me for it!)  LOL!  I am very grateful that my daughter was there to help me!  Now I am almost too afraid to do any searches on my computer!

On to other, more pleasant topics of discussion!

Plumeria/Frangipani Plant Cutting from M

This is the plumeria, also known as frangipani, cutting that gardener M gave me on Wednesday.  I hope it will grow!

Thursday's Broccoli Harvest

Broccoli is supposed to be a cool weather crop over here, but, my plants are still doing their best to provide me with some broccoli florets.  Not big florets, but, enough for a serving (or two if made into a stir-fry with some other vegetables).

Passionfruit Harvest

One of the passionfruits had fallen off the vine this evening and I picked it up.  It doesn't look very ripe, to me; maybe it broke off for the wind or a bird knocked it off.  I am keeping it to show M, when he is here, tomorrow, and cut it then.  He picked some of the sunflower seeds to try, yesterday, and we were both very disappointed to see that some insects had bored into them and there was nothing inside the perfect looking seed shell!

I called my cousin P, around noon, today, and chatted with her for a bit.  I told her that I would not be able to make it to her daughter's baby shower, scheduled for this weekend.  I asked her not to misunderstand or be offended, but, I am just not comfortable going out and mingling.  Today's new reported Covid cases in Los Angeles county amounted to 5,316, there were 13 Covid-related deaths, and hospitalizations are now close to 1,000 (989 to be exact).  Cousin said she understood and her daughter had already told her that I had called and said I will not be attending.

A Very Simple Baby Shower Card

I made a very simple baby shower card to go with the blanket I crocheted.

Re-Covered Gift Bag

I had leftover baby-themed gift wrap paper, but, I didn't have a big enough plain box to put the blanket in to wrap it (and the paper was too thin and flimsy to wrap the blanket by itself; the package would have been too soft and the paper might have torn quickly).  I didn't have any pretty gift bag, either.  There was an off-white bag in my stash and I would have used it as it was, except it looked a bit dingy.  Wrapping paper, scissors, and glue stick to the rescue!  I re-covered the off-white bag and we have a baby-themed gift bag!  I used white and mint colored tissues from the stash to wrap around the blanket and two white ribbons to tie the handles.  The gift is ready to be given if and when cousin's daughter stops by.  I'll mail it to her, if she is unable to do so.

Later in the evening, I chatted on the phone with friend R; she said she received a similar scam message on her tablet, yesterday, but, she knew to turn the computer off and then, back on.  I'm glad she knew what to do!

I have not kept to my meal plan, this week!  Yesterday, I had chicken curry and a tortilla for dinner (it was what I had planned for Sunday's dinner); today, I was going to make the noodles I had meant to cook, yesterday, but, instead, had chicken curry and the last of the boxed rice mix I had made!  I will make the noodles for tomorrow's dinner!

Today, I am grateful for:
- Not quite falling for the scam!
- Daughter's help with getting out of that scam screen!
- Phone chats with cousin and friend
- The garden harvest
- Gift wrapping, etc., from the stash

Today's joyful activity was making a card.

Plans for tomorrow include having M tend to the garden.

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

  1. How frightening to have received that message on your computer screen, thank goodness you were wise enough to phone your daughter and not the scammers! Don't be afraid of using your computer just be very careful and don't click on any links in emails. The Frangipani looks lovely i hope it grows and flowers for you. How clever you are covering the gift bag and I'm sure your cousin's daughter will love her card and gifts.

    1. It got me all flustered, Eileen. You'd think I'd know better, but, apparently, I didn't! Now, I just feel idiotic to have almost fallen for it! Thank goodness for my daughter knowing what to do! She was very kind, too, not telling me that I was all kinds of a fool!
Thank you; I do hope the frangipani will do well for me. Once upon a time, I would have run to the store and bought a new gift bag, but, these days, I'm making-do with what I have on hand! :)

  2. So glad you were able to contact your daughter before your computer was compromised. I hate we have to worry about things like that.
In my mind a meal plan is just a suggestion that can be altered any way one chooses (including ignoring it entirely)

    1. Thank you, Anne. Yes, it was a blessing that I could call my daughter and she was able to figure out what was going on and what I should do! I got all shaken up! You'd think I'd have known better, but, I guess I am as liable to get taken in as anyone else!
I honestly didn't feel like cooking after my near-scamming experience (I had been trying to find out how to cook the shirataki noodles when this whole thing happened). Instead, I decided to finish up some leftovers and cook the noodles, tomorrow. My daughter said to drain the package of noodles, rinse them well, and add directly to the stir-fry. I should have called and asked her how to cook them, instead of trying find online! :(

  3. Computer scams catch out even the savvy tech people sometimes. You took the wise actions! I love the baby card. I have never seen a frangipani flower before. I only know the word as an almond filling for tarts!

    1. You really have to be aware and on your toes, so to speak, with these scammers, Angela! They play on your emotions, counting on you to get flustered and panicky!
Thank you! I used old scrapbooking paper I had on hand for the card. The frangipani/plumeria flowers come in different colors, white, yellow, light pink, dark pink, red. One of my neighbors has a whole yard full of beautiful frangipani flowers!

  4. I have learned if anyone that I don't know sends me an urgent or threatening message, that it's a scam. It's too bad that we have to worry about such things, but such is life. I'm glad you were able to get out of the trouble without any permanent damage. I have never thought of covering a gift bag with wrapping paper. I will have to keep that in mind for future gifts.

    1. I had that, "Oh, no, what have I done?!" reaction when the message showed up! I thought that I had already downloaded the virus! Fortunately, I hadn't!
Covering the gift bag was probably a silly thing to do, but, I'm making do with what I have on hand! It's one way to use up the stash! :D

  5. I'm glad your daughter was able to help you out. All these scams are awful but don't let it put you off using your laptop ... I always close down any page that doesn't respond in the way I expect. Maybe think about upgrading your virus software to one that is capable of catching unsafe pages and sites like the one you stumbled across.

The frangipani is very pretty. I hope it grows well in your garden. You are certainly greeting good returns from your broccoli but it's a shame about the sunflower seeds ... will you try again next year?

You've done a really good job with the gift bag and the card, and I'm sure your cousin's daughter will love the gift.

    1. Yes, thank goodness for a daughter who knows what to do when her mother gets herself into all kinds of computer trouble! :D I will know better, in the future (hopefully!).

Thank you; I hope the frangipani will grow well. I am disappointed about the sunflower seeds, but, that was just one flower; maybe the others will do better. Yes, I will try again, next year.

Thank you; I was happy with the card; the gift bag could have been better, but, it's sufficient for the purpose. I'm decluttering the stash! :D

  6. I'm glad you were able to get your daughter to help and you weren't scammed! It's amazing what they come up with in an attempt to get money from people.

I love the little card. It's perfect for a baby shower!

    1. I'm so grateful that my daughter was able to help! I sort of panicked when the message appeared! I thought that I had already downloaded the virus!
Thank you for your kind comment about the card! That baby bib was a scrapbooking pre-punched scrap (not even sure if that's the correct term for it) I had bought years ago when I was scrapbooking my daughter's baby pictures. I used the scrap for the scrapbook, but, kept the piece it was removed from and have been using that as a stencil for practically every single baby card I've made since then! The stencil has slightly bigger scallops around the bib, but, I can't be bothered hand cutting around them with my scissors; I use a pair of scissors that have a scalloped edge and it works!

  7. How scary to have that pop up on your computer. I've had similar events in the past including sound effects! but thankfully shutting down worked.
Your baby shower card and the bag are lovely. How sad it is that we still have to be so careful about attending gatherings. I can see that masking will soon come back where we live, in fact for some of us it never went away!
That's too bad that insects have got into the sunflower seeds. We have masses of beaked hazel bushes which we keep cutting back. They would be great if we could use the nuts but the insects always get to them first. I guess the squirrels don't mind a worm in their food!

    1. Yes, Bushlady, it was scary! I will now know to 1) NOT click on various messages and 2) simply shut down the computer if something like that happens again!
Thank you! The card and the bag turned out well, didn't they? :D I had fun being creative with paper and glue! :D I must now try to make a batch of envelopes as I am running short of suitable envelopes for these cards! Yes, our Covid numbers are going up and people seem to act as if it is all behind us when it isn't.
I was disappointed about the sunflower seeds, but, I think M was more disappointed! I sort of expected the birds to eat them, anyway, but, I guess the insects got to them first! Oh, well, they have to live too! :D

  9. Oh dear! I'm not sure what I would have done. I might have realised it was a scam but even so, don't know if I would have dared to turn the computer off or what. Now I have seen your screenshot, I will know what to do if it happens to me. I'm glad you escaped unscathed! You made a really good job of prettifying that bag. The whole thing makes a lovely welcome for the little one.

    1. Yes, it was the "do not turn off your computer" thing that had me worried! But, I checked with my daughter and did as she said - I've long accepted the fact that when it comes to computers and modern technology, my child knows much more than I do! LOL.
Thank you for the kind words about the bag! I am happy with how it turned out! :D

  10. You were wise to call your daughter and not fall for that scam! I fell for a scam email at work, but it turned out it was just my employer testing a random group of us to see if we would catch it! I was thankful it wasn't real, but still annoyed they did that! The card and bag are very cute!

    1. Thank you, Celie. Well, that was very sneaky of your employer to send out that scam email, but, thank goodness it wasn't real!
Were you able to check with your office to see if they had any admin work for you to do over the summer? Or, have you changed your mind about that?

  11. So glad that you had your daughter to help you! It is so easy to get caught. Scammers are getting more and more subtle. Sending hugs. As for the wrapping - you are so creative and that is why having a paper stash is such a good idea. The card looks awesome.

  12. That scam thing is scary! I've heard horror stories of people's computers being held hostage for ransom - it's a good thing you had your computer expert on retainer!
You did a great job with your reworking of the gift bag. It looks lovely.

More broccoli - hard to believe. That is a strong plant.
I have little tomatoes on my plants and am very excited :)

Yes, more broccoli! I've allowed some of it to go to seed and plan to harvest the seed pods for next year. Not sure how successful that will be, but, we shall see! Ooh, I hope your little tomatoes will grow to be nice, big tomatoes that you can harvest! Keep me updated! :)

    1. It is, isn't it? It really was very nice of M to give me a cutting. I guess he could see that I was sad that my own plant got scorched during the heat wave. He saved the tip of the scorched plant and we potted it up; hopefully, it will root and grow!
