Saturday

Brunch: Milk Rice (Kiri Bath) and Onion Relish (Seeni Sambol)

This morning, I participated in the Temple "kathina" ceremony online.  Every year, the Buddhist monks observe a three month long retreat during the traditional rainy season, at the end of which, there is a special ceremony during which a special robe is sewn and donated by the devotees to the society of the monks in general.  The monks of each temple then convene and gift the robe to one particular monk who resided at the temple for the duration of the retreat.  Being able to participate in this ceremony by donating something towards it is considered as a very meritorious deed.  I feel blessed to have been able to participate, if only virtually.

Afterwards, I made milk rice and onion sambol for brunch.

Later, I watered the garden, both front and back, especially the newly transplanted moringa plants and practiced the piano.  I might have taken an afternoon nap on the sofa, too!

Later in the evening, I made some beef and vegetable soup for dinner:

It was another "cool" (high of 71F) day.  I dressed in layers and was still cold!  I even wore my fingerless mitts for a short time!  Eventually, I caved in and switched on the electric space heater, a little while ago.  I have it set up right in front of me as I type this and I am slowly thawing out!  Friend R said she was in a short sleeved T-shirt and 3/4 length pants.

Daughter sent me her Inktober drawing; today's prompt was "dig"

Day 24: Dig

These are Pokemon known as Digletts which burrow through the ground; usually only their heads are visible.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Being able to participate in Temple ceremonies online

- Water for the garden

- Afternoon naps

- Warm woolen sweaters

- Electric space heaters

Today's joyful activity was participating in the Temple ceremonies online.

How is your weekend coming along?

  1. Looking back over the period since March, the creativity and willingness to adapt and compromise to find new ways of doing things gives me hope for the future. Your virtual participation in the Temple ceremonies is just one wonderful example and I am so glad you were able to do this.

  4. It's wonderful that you were able to participate in the ceremony, albeit online. Technology has enabled us to participate in so much during these restricted times, allowing us to feel connected still.
It's become much cooler here today. I even wore my gloves. X

  5. Thank goodness we have the ability to participate virtually in special occasions. Twenty years ago it wouldn't have worked!
I find 70°F in the house can be quite cool and my fingers sometimes turn white. We woke up to a frost but the day warmed up a little and we did have a good long walk (after an after lunch nap) and we met a couple of people to chat to.

    1. Yes, it's wonderful that we have the technology now, isn't it?

Even with the space heater on, the family room is registering at 67F right now. It's 61F outside and we are supposed to go down to 53F, tonight. We are supposed to warm up to 80F by the end of next week, so, I am looking forward to that!

  6. Weather in your area sounds nice, though 71F is a bit too cold for me as well. :)
It's still hot here, with somewhat cooler mornings.

Now I am craving for milk rice. LOL I need to make some soon. :)

    1. I prefer the hot weather to cold! Milk rice is one of my favorite breakfasts. Um, better not look at today's post! My friend R found someone who makes kavum, etc. and shared some of what she bought with me! :)

  7. Your food looks very good. I need to make some of your onion relish. I think I would really enjoy it.

I have some soup on the stove for today. Combined various leftovers and voila! Dinner is not far behind. lol

    1. Thank you, Debra. If you like sweet and spicy, then, the onion relish is just the thing (you can adjust the spiciness to your taste).

Yay for soup! I shared some of the soup I made with my neighbor and friend, yesterday, but, there's plenty more left. :)
