Roses on Wednesday

October Roses

I picked another small bouquet of roses from the garden, today.  I placed some at the altar and the rest on the mantelpiece.

In the morning, I emailed my friend at the retirement office to let him know that I received the "notification of award" letter from Social Security regarding my Medicare application, but, not the card, itself.  I was told to hold off on submitting the rest of the health insurance enrollment forms until I receive the card and send a copy of the card with the forms.  So, that's what I'll do.

I practiced the piano in the afternoon and did some paperwork and filing.  I also called and cancelled the automatic renewal of the magazine subscriptions that had been part of my daughter's birthday gift to me last year.  I had received a notification card in the mail, stating that the subscriptions would run out in November, but, they will be automatically renewed for my ease and convenience (oh, aren't they so considerate?!)  Of course, they would have been renewed at much higher rates than the $2 per subscription that my daughter was able to get.  Unless I called or went online and cancelled, before November.  That information was buried in the middle of a long paragraph in fine print!  Well, I called and cancelled.  The customer service person wanted to know why I was cancelling and I said I didn't want to renew them, especially at the going rates.  Then, he told me that as an existing customer, I could get the renewal at $2 per subscription!  Oh, so they were going to take a chance that I wouldn't read the fine print and charge me the higher price if I had allowed it to renew automatically?  Very clever of them!  LOL.  Maybe if they had stated I could renew the subscriptions at $2 in the card they sent, I might have allowed it to renew automatically.  But, being offered the rate only as an incentive to keep the subscription going didn't work with me.  I still declined to accept the renewal at $2 per subscription and cancelled.  I received an email confirming the cancellation; hopefully, I won't be surprised by a renewal billing!

The dentist's office called me around 4:00 p.m. to reschedule today's appointment because the lab technician was unable to be there, today.  It was rescheduled to next Wednesday.  Then, they called me, again, at 6:30 p.m. to say the appointment has to be rescheduled to the following Wednesday!  I didn't ask why, but, I'm glad I didn't have to go anywhere, today, too.

In the evening, I watered the garden, both front and back.  Then, I made a pork stew for dinner:

Stew

Pork, potato, carrots, onions, celery, tomatoes, and broccoli.

Later, I called friend R and chatted with her and, still later, video chatted with my daughter.

My daughter sent me her drawing for today:

Day 21: Sleep

Day 21:Sleep

Snoozer (a hamster that is always sleeping in a sock) from Hamtaro.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Roses in October

- Being able to get advice from my friend regarding the health insurance application process

- The dental appointment was rescheduled

- Water for the garden

- Video chatting with my daughter

Today's joyful activity was picking roses and making an arrangement (of sorts) with them.

Wednesday's To Do List:

- Vacuum
- Water the garden - back and rest of the front - DONE
- Paperwork/filing - DID SOME
- Do one decluttering/organizing task - DONE (paper)
- Dental appointment in the evening - RESCHEDULED

I had woken up with a slight headache that lingered most of the day; that's my excuse for not vacuuming as planned and I am sticking to that excuse!

Thursday's To Do List:
- Vacuum
- Clean the kitchen
- Tidy the family room
- Paperwork/filing

How was your Wednesday?  What are your plans for Thursday?

    1. Thank you, Jules. Yes, the headache wore off, eventually, and I have no excuse for not vacuuming, today! :D

  2. I think those auto renewal things are a pain. We had quite a hassle trying to persuade the National Trust that they were overcharging us (we count as Seniors) I am glad I have new glasses, it's easier to read the small print in the T&Cs! (do you use that abbreviation for Terms& Conditions in the USA ?)

    1. I love how they make it sound like they are doing you a favor with the auto renewal - "you will not have to deal with multiple reminders of renewal in the mail", "you will not have to provide any further information", etc. I haven't noticed the abbreviation T&Cs used here, but, maybe it's just me being my usual unobservant self! :D

  3. Beautiful roses!

The small print on these renewals annoy me. I'd much prefer it if they were open and made it very clear that preferential rates are available.

The stew looks so tasty, although I'd have to miss out the celery or grate it just to add flavour. I don't like the texture of it, cooked or uncooked!

    1. Thank you, Eileen. The roses are enjoying the cooler weather we've been having (mid-70s, so far this week).

They try to catch the unwary and I'll admit I've been taken in once or twice. But, now, I am both older and more aware, if not wiser! I've learned to read the fine print!

You can leave out the celery! I'm not a big fan of celery, myself (gives me indigestion!), but, I add small amounts of it to various dishes from time to time.

  4. Ah, the fine print! They always stick the fine print in don't they! This reminds me that I need to go over Mom's magazine renewals with a fine tooth comb!
Again I love your daughter's drawing!
    Have a wonderful Thursday .

    1. Yes, good idea to go through your mom's magazine renewals; it seems that almost all of them will renew automatically unless one actively cancels them!

Thank you and hope you have a wonderful day, too.

  5. How lovely to be able to have roses at this time of year.

You do have to watch those subscriptions! I always cancel before and then get a renewal at the cheaper price if I still want them. It's tricky of them and I think they are hoping you aren't paying attention and will just let them renew!

    1. Yes, it is lovely to be able to pick roses in October. :) The bushes get pruned in January and I am usually able to pick at least one or two flowers until then.

I was almost tempted to renew the subscriptions when they said I could continue to get them at the special rate of $2, but, I decided not to. I might get another subscription, later.

    1. Thank you, Martha. Yes, I was glad I didn't have to go to the dentist's. I don't like to have too many appointments in one week, especially these days!

  7. It is wonderful that you have a detailed agenda. I think I could do a better job than I do after I see this.
No roses in October here. Just north of us a few miles got a huge snowstorm. Today we have a COLD rain! UGH.
Hope you have a blessed Thursday. xo Diana

    1. Diana, if you think it might help you, my weekly cleaning schedule is here:

      https://bless2cents.blogspot.com/2020/04/revised-weekly-cleaning-schedule.html

I still adapt it to suit each day, but, the daily lists I post are based on this "master" list.

Brr! I remember we had snow in early October, one year, when I was at Green Bay. Winter comes early, over there, doesn't it? Stay warm!

  8. The little Snoozer guy is so cute.

It's good sometimes to have an appointment cancelled and get the unexpected pleasure of staying home when you weren't planning on it.
You would think with the pandemic and all the time we are spending at home that wouldn't be the case but I think for people that are homebodies in general, it still is that way.

    1. Snoozer is cute! He is always shown to be sleeping, but, in the anime videos, as least, every now and then, he'll say something really profound in his sleep! Yes, I've watched some of the videos with my daughter. :D

I was very glad the dental appointment was postponed. I felt having four medical appointments in one week was almost too much (I have an appointment with the oncologist, tomorrow). I was trying to get them all done before my current insurance period ended, just in case the Medicare acceptance didn't come through in time. After tomorrow, I should have a small break before the next round of appointments take place.

  9. What a busy week you are having. It must have been quite a relief to be able to put off one of your appointments. As for the magazine run-around, it really is bad to have automatically renewals. Of course they make out they are doing you a favour, so you don't miss an issue!
Your roses are gorgeous, but I can't complain with the purple asters and some yellow wild flowers still hanging on along the roadside. I'll take what I can get! We are even promised an unseasonably mild day tomorrow, with or without thunderstorms - we shall see.

    1. This has been probably the busiest week I've had since early March! I have one more appointment, tomorrow, but, after that, there are no more appointments for at least two weeks! I'm glad you are still having some flowers to enjoy, Bushlady. Hope you have a lovely, mild day, tomorrow. We are expecting to have a chance of rain, this weekend!

  10. Hi Bless, Your roses look spectacular! Mine are in bloom, too. I think they need another feeding, though. Like you, I just watered the front and back garden. I also harvested my persimmons. They are so sweet and delicious this year!

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. Oh, yum! Persimmons! How wonderful! Which variety do you have? Fuyu or Hachiya?
