Hot on Saturday

Today, we went up to either 98F or 100F.  The hottest it got inside my house was 86F, which was when I turned on the fans.   Until then, it was quite comfortable for me.

I spent the majority of the day sewing the quilt.  I did a single row of quilting all around the edge of the border to keep the batting in place and tied the rest of the quilt.  I used some pearlized cotton thread that I had for tying, because I couldn't manage to pull any yarn through all the fabric at the corners where the individual blocks meet.  The quilt has been laid aside until it is time to be given.  I took some photos, but, I will share only after I have given the quilt away.  Today, I watched cooking shows while I sewed.

In the evening, I started the car (it started without any problems, even after not starting it all week!) and watered the garden.  One of my neighbors was having a party!  From what I could tell, it was being held in the backyard and garage, which, I guess, is safer than having it indoors.  I could hear the music and people laughing.  Somehow, I doubt if anyone was wearing masks; at least, the two people I saw leaving the party (they left while I was still watering the front garden) weren't wearing any face coverings!  I can only marvel that people are holding and attending parties at this time!

After I watered the garden, I practiced the piano, had dinner (ground beef with broccoli and mashed potatoes), chatted on the phone with cousin P and video chatted with my daughter.  Her grocery delivery was made later than expected and she didn't receive several items she ordered, including bread, but, she's happy that she received all the meat and most of the vegetables she wanted.

Today, I made a cold dessert:

Frozen Banana-Peach Dessert
I blended together a banana and a peach I had frozen and had half of it for dessert.  I froze the other half for another day.  I added a little vanilla to it, but, I think I should have used only half the banana.  I don't much care for very ripe banana and the predominant taste was of very ripe banana.  I would have preferred if the taste of the peach was more emphasized.  Maybe I'll stir in a little peach jam into the other half of the dessert when I eat it.  Nevertheless, it was a refreshing dessert on a hot day.  My daughter said she adds peanut butter to the banana when she makes it.  I wonder how it will taste with dulce de leche?

Today, I am grateful for:
- My daughter received her grocery delivery
- The car started without any problems
- A guilt-free dessert of blended frozen fruit
- The quilt is done
- Water for the garden

Today's joyful activity was sewing.

Plans for tomorrow include some tidying up and putting away of things.

How was your Saturday?  What are your plans for Sunday?

  1. I keep my A/C at 75 degrees and still have my fans on. I'm afraid you would freeze to death in my house, Bless. And I would melt inside yours. Ha.

When businesses started opening up, I think some people assumed the danger was over. The ONLY reasons they were allowed to reopen with guidelines was 1) for the economy, and 2) because there were enough ICU beds to handle the crisis. When the ICU beds are taken up, they will have to make decisions about who will live and who will die, like what happened in Italy and which we were warned about. I don't understand the parties either Bless, but glad to know that MOST people are taking precautions.

Your dinner and frozen fruit blend for dessert sounded scrumptious.

    1. I'm afraid you're right, Susan; you'll definitely melt in my house, unless you visit in the winter and, even then, you'll be wearing shorts and a strappy top while I'll be all bundled up in my sweaters and socks! LOL.

According to our mayor, as of Friday, our city had 113 available ICU beds. I have my opinion about people who choose to ignore the public health warnings; suffice it to say that I am not very sympathetic towards them.

Thank you; I enjoyed my dinner and the frozen dessert was a guilt-free treat, as it was all fruit. :)

  2. How big is the quilt? Quilting and tying it all in one day seems like a lot. I think my hands would get tired.

    1. It could be used on a queen sized bed, Live and Learn. It doesn't go all the way to the ground, but, it hangs down midway. I only did a single row of quilting, all around. The ties are spaced about 6 1/2 inches apart. Just at the corners where four blocks joins. Or, are supposed to join (some of my corners didn't meet properly!)

  3. Well done on completing the quilt. It sounds like you achieved a lot, despite the heat.

It's a shame your daughter didn't get her full delivery. Hopefully she can manage until she can arrange another one.

I don't understand why so many people believe themselves to be immune from the virus. It's scary enough where I live but is an even greater concern for you. Take good care xx

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I guess having a deadline was helpful in getting it done!

My daughter will manage. She might not be able to go for a whole month, as planned, but, she will be fine for about three weeks.

Apparently, a lot of people think the whole virus situation has been blown out of proportion; they don't believe it to be as serious as we are told it is and they certainly don't want to be told what to do. They talk about how they were allowed to get exposed to chicken pox, on purpose, when they were children; maybe they were, but, I wonder if they would have been allowed to be exposed to small pox in the same manner? I am very concerned because I have so many existing health conditions that put me in a very high risk group. I owe it to myself, and to my daughter, to be careful and not take unnecessary risks, so, that's what I try to do. :)

    1. It is certainly a guilt free treat (as long as I stick to just fruit). I have two more bananas in the freezer, so, look forward to having this, again. :)

  5. You've persuaded me to try some hand stitched quilting. I just need to finish the wash cloths I'm working on then I will have a look for some online tutorials. I'm looking forward to seeing your photographs. X

  6. Oh my goodness, now that we have cooled down to something more comfortable, you are getting a heatwave. I hope it doesn't last too long and that you get rain from time to time. Your dessert sounds yummy and next time you will know to reduce the amount of banana.
This morning I "attended" mass in a church in Redlands, and then checked the map to see exactly where that is in California.
We have a continual source of entertainment - birds of all kinds going after the serviceberries, and then the real show is at a peanut feeder that I hung at the corner of the deck. Chipmunks, squirrels and blue jays have all taken turns getting at the nuts inside the shells. The squirrels hang upside down!

    1. We are supposed to "cool down" to 95F by the end of the week! :D

I'll be making the frozen banana dessert, again, and I will add less of the banana and more of the other fruit. It's nice to have something frozen that is not as guilt-inducing as ice cream! :D That's nice that you get to "attend" different churches all around the world. :)

Lucky you to have all that entertainment for peanuts, as they say! :D Someone posted a link to a video where someone had set up a complicated obstacle course for squirrels in their backyard and recorded how the squirrels learned to navigate the course. I enjoyed watching it - those squirrels mastered the course in no time at all!

  7. I look forward to seeing your quilt. :)

Does your daughter like baking, Bless? Perhaps she can make no knead bread? It's very easy. You need only 4 ingredients - flour, water, salt and yeast. If I say easy, that means it is EASY. :)

I've heard of people going to COVID parties. And one 30 year old in Austin, TX dying after attending one. He thought it was a hoax.

    Stay safe. xxx

    1. My daughter does like to bake, but, bread making, even no-knead bread, requires yeast, and neither she nor I seem able to get any! She has some bagels and tortillas in the freezer, she said, so, will manage with that and, maybe put in another grocery order, sooner, rather than later.

I, too, heard about that young man, Nil. It's very sad, as he had the rest of his life to look forward to.

  8. When the lockdown was on, here in New Zealand, I was 100% shocked at the people who sneaked around having dinner at friends' and such. I could only assume that it was a sense of entitlement. Bananas - I can seldom eat them, especially the properly ripe ones, as they mysteriously make me a bit too acidic. Which is most annoying.

    1. And yet, your country was able to get things under control better than any other country. Well done! Too bad about the bananas; you are doing the right thing to avoid them. I miss the variety of bananas I ate when I was growing up.

  9. Your dessert looks yummy, and sounds healthy. I have been eating a lot of gelato. It has been hot here, hasn't it? It's twenty degrees cooler up at the cabin.

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. I had some of the dessert, today, while it was still quite frozen and it was much better. It was a guilt-free treat, because it was just fresh fruit that had been blended and frozen. :) Yes, it has been hot, down here. I'm glad you are able to go to your cabin and escape the heat!

  10. I think I would love your banana-peach desert! I'd like heavy on the bananas though. A party...maybe not a good idea. I like the quieter life that this virus brings anyway! Andrea

    1. I'm sure you could increase the amount of bananas or make it with bananas, only. Might be something to try when you next buy some bananas?

I had to laugh when you said "I wonder how it would taste with dulce de leche?"
You might be asking yourself that question quite a bit over the next few months.

Your car is fairing better then mine. My battery was dead. And reading you mentioning it in your post finally got me to go out and charge it with a portable battery I have - which I bought several years ago after Hurricane Sandy on the east coast. It's come in quite handy.
    (Duracell Powerpack Pro 600)

I see your state is pulling back on it's restrictions. Seems really smart.
I just went to the store after a few weeks of not going. I was in and out in 20 minutes. Everyone wears a mask in my area. Not that I go out often - really only to the grocery store - but when I do, I never see anyone without a mask for which I'm glad.

    1. LOL, yes, I guess I will be asking that dulce de leche question quite a bit!

Oh, I'm sorry to hear your car battery was dead, but, how wonderful that you were prepared to charge it with a portable battery! Thank you for the name of the portable battery - I shall add it to my list of supplies to have on hand!

Yes, we are putting the brakes on opening up, in response to the spike in the number of new cases. I'm glad that you are able to get your grocery shopping done without having to encounter any unmasked fellow shoppers. I hope it stays that way and you stay safe.
