More Shopping on Thursday

On Thursday, I went shopping!  First, I went back to the fabric store.  Yesterday, I had a 50% off one regular price item, which expired yesterday, but, I didn't find anything for a price I wanted to pay.  Today, I went armed with a 20% off the total purchase coupon; it was valid on sale items as well as regular priced items (I had it with me, yesterday, too, but it didn't go into effect until today).  I like the 20% off total purchase, including sale items, coupons because everything I bought was on sale!

Fabric and Yarn and Thread, Oh, My!

I bought some fabric for the baby quilts, from the "take an additional discount" shelves to get the best prices; the original prices on the fabrics ranged from $6.99 to $9.99 per yard:

Elephants in Circles; Cotton Flannel; $1.46/yd.
Animal Alphabet; Cotton Flannel; $1.46/yd.

Adventure Balloons, Cotton; $2.79/yd.

I bought two yards of the Elephants in Circles fabric; the background is a pinky beige, and I think it would make a good backing for at least one of the baby quilts.  The alphabet fabric has a beige background; I bought one yard of that and one yard of the air balloons fabric.

In addition to the fabric for the baby quilts, I also bought a yard of the Halloween cats fabric, regular price $10.99 on sale for 40% off, to make something for one of my cousins:

Cat Costume Party; $6.59/yd.

Sewing thread was on sale for 40% off the regular price of $2.99, and I bought three of them for $1.79 each, as one can never have too many reels of white thread!

Finally, I bought five balls of wool, on sale for $3.47 each in the clearance yarn bin.  In a shade called  New Denim.  I debated long and hard about buying them!  I saw them, yesterday, picked up three balls, and put them back, because we all know how much I need more yarn, don't we?   LOL!  After I came home, I looked up the regular price of this yarn - $7.99 at this particular store and $5.99 at a different crafts supplies store.  Today, I decided that $3.47 was a good price (since they were clearance items, the 20% off coupon didn't apply to them).  There were five balls and I bought them all!

Wool Yarn

$3.47/100% Wool
I'll knit myself another warm, wool sweater for under $20!

My total came to $37.34 with sales tax:

I also received another 50% off any one regular priced item, valid Sunday-Wednesday, 9/22-25.  I just might go back, next week, and see if I can find something else for the quilt.

Then, on the way home from the fabric store, I stopped at the grocery store to pick up the cans of tuna on sale for $.50 each, some milk, and a new bottle of ketchup as I had come to the end of my current bottle.

9/19 Groceries
I bought 12 cans of tuna in water, to share with Dancer!  Grapes were $.99/lb, so I bought some black grapes.  I also bought half a gallon of milk.  Then, I checked the reduced racks and bought a package of 6 pita breads for $.99, two 1 lb. packages of pasta for $.49 each, a package of something called "brown butter" cookies, regular price $4.99, on sale for $2.00 (turned out to be similar to butterscotch chip cookies!)  My total came to $17.95.

Friend R had said she might come over in the evening, but, she called to say she was too tired after a full day of work.  So, I am spending a quiet evening, relaxing and watching TV.

Today's joyful activity was the return visit to the fabric store and finding some bargains.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Coupons!
- Finding more bargains
- Safe driving
- Pleasant weather (highs in the mid-80s)
- Learning how to knit

Tomorrow, I have my follow-up appointment with the oncologist.

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

  1. I like the elephants in circle fabric. Good choice! Also like the wool for your new sweater. And I like that you treated yourself even though you have a stash of other fabrics and yarn ... everyone deserves a treat sometimes xx

    1. It is a cute fabric, isn't it? I considered using it for the backing on both quilts, but then, wondered if the pinky-beige background color would be suitable for a baby boy's quilt. That's why I bought the alphabet fabric, as well.

Thank you. That's what my daughter said, too, that I deserved a treat. :) It was a good price on the wool yarn and I feel warmer when I am wearing a wool sweater than in the acrylic yarn sweaters.

  2. Fabric stores are fun with so many beautiful things to see. I'm impressed that you only bought what you did.

The prices on your grocery items were much better than I can get here--even at Aldi. However, you pay a lot more for gas than I do. I guess it all evens out.

    1. I love seeing all the lovely fabrics. But, I tried to choose strictly from the rack at the back of the store, where already reduced fabrics were on sale for an additional reduction, depending on the color of the dot at the end of the bolt - e.g., orange = an additional 50% off; grey = an additional 60% off, etc. Except for the Halloween fabric I bought to make something for cousin N, who did so much for me (and my daughter, too) when I was undergoing treatments.

The majority of the groceries I buy are that week's specials. The only thing I bought, yesterday, and paid full price were the milk ($2.19) and ketchup ($3.69; had been waiting for it to go on sale, but, it hasn't, and I am almost all out of ketchup; it is one of the few things I am brand loyal to). The regular price of the tuna was $1.39/can; the reg. price on the pita is $3.49; I'm not sure how much the reg. price on the pasta is, but, at least $1; reg. price on the cookies was $4.99. As for gas, I think we have one of the highest gas prices, because of our additional requirements for cleaner burning fuel and various taxes. As you say, it all evens out. :)

  3. I’m so jealous that you went to Joann’s. It can really be a black hole, can’t it?

  4. I like the elephants fabric though all of them are nice! Coupons are the best way to shop at the crafts shops. They all seem to have them. If there is something particular I want I hold off until a 50 or 60% off coupon comes up. Enjoy the weekend!

    1. The elephants fabric is cute, isn't it? I try to buy all my fabric and craft supplies when there is a sale or I have coupons. :)

Thank you; I hope you have a good weekend, too.

  5. You got some adorable fabric. I've knit & crocheted with that yarn and I like it. You got a good price on everything and that's always good.

    1. Thank you, Debra. I've used some of the fabric on one baby quilt and will use some of the rest on another one. It is a good yarn for knitting and crochet, isn't it? My daughter prefers the acrylic yarns for ease of washing and it's not so scratchy; but, I like the wool for the warmth. I live for bargains! :D

    2. I'm using that yarn on my Christmas crocheted afghan - inspired last year when I saw yours :)
It will be nice and warm in chilly New England.
