Baby Boy Quilt on Friday

I finished sewing the baby quilt today:

Baby Boy Quilt
I finished sewing the binding and did a row of hand quilting right around the edge.  The rest of the quilt is minimally quilted with "in the ditch" lines of machine sewing.  I am definitely not a quilter!  LOL.  I much prefer the patchwork part of the quilt making process to the quilting part!

Flannel Backing

The finished quilt measures 40 inches by 49 inches.  I didn't start out with a particular measurement in mind, though.  I just cut out 12 rectangles with the balloon fabric I had bought (I used half a yard of that fabric; I have another 1/2 yard left for another project) and paired it with solid blue fabric I had in the stash.  The widths of the strips were determined by how much fabric I had.  I had more of the light blue than the medium blue and almost a yard of the dark blue, which was the biggest piece.

I didn't have a definite quilt pattern, either, but it looks a little bit like an Attic Window quilt, doesn't it?

Today's joyful activity was finishing the quilt.

  1. That is super. The plain fabrics go so well with the balloon print. Like you, I prefer doing the "patching and piecing" to the quilting.

  2. Oh, Bless, it's beautiful! I love all those shades of blue. It makes me wish I was able to work with fabric. Sadly, I wouldn't have a clue where to start. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. I was very happy when I found the balloon fabric, because I knew it would go well with the solid blue fabric I already had.

I think anyone can make a quilt. The first step is to gather some fabric. These days, the fabric shops have already cut out and color coordinated packs of fabric, if you don't have an assortment of fabric already or don't want to pick out a selection of your own. Then, it is just a matter of sewing them together! You can do that by hand, if you don't have a sewing machine. In fact, most of my first quilts were handsewn, as I didn't have a sewing machine and I preferred handsewing.

  3. I think it's beautiful. A piece of quilt art that will last a long time. Since it not such a baby pattern the boy could keep it as a throw on his bed for many years. Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie

    1. Thank you, Susie. It can be both a crib quilt and a play mat as he grows older. :)

    1. Thank you, Anne. I made one for his older brother, earlier, so now, they both have their own quilts. :)

    1. Thank you, One Family. There are lots of online "how to" videos on quilting, if you want to learn. I, myself, learned by reading books, before the age of the internet. :)

  7. That is such a pretty quilt, you have the colours just right and the dark binding makes a good "frame" for the quilt.

We were over in Hanover for a conference and that is a 6 hour time difference for us and right now I don't know whether I want to make supper or get my head down and sleep! We had a great experience in a city that was new to us and enjoyed finding our way around on the trains. I think North America has really missed out by prioritizing automobiles over public transportation. It is amazing how easily one can get around if the transit system is well planned.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Yes, the dark binding sets it off nicely, doesn't it?

Glad to hear that you had a good visit to a new to you city. Hope you were able to get a little something to eat and then, a good night's sleep!

And so speedy! It didn't take you long at all.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Yes, it came together fairly quickly. I didn't put in a lot of quilting, though (that's the part I dislike the most!)
