Grocery Shopping on Monday

I am struggling to adapt to the time change!  Once again, I slept the morning away!  At least, I don't have to go to work, so, I can sleep in without any consequences!

But, I was up when neighbor T called; I didn't recognize the number she was calling from and let it go to the answering machine, but when I heard who it was, I picked it up.  She was calling to tell me that she didn't have any phone or TV service.  I asked if she wanted me to call the phone company to report it, but she had apparently done so.  She said she just wanted to see if I was home and to let me know that her phone and TV were out, because I wouldn't be able to call her.  I asked if she needed anything, wanted to watch my TV or wanted me to come over and keep her company, but she said no.  So, I told her that I planned to go to the post office, later in the afternoon, but, if she needed anything before that, to just come over and knock on my door.

In any case, I waited until after 4:00 p.m. to go to the post office to mail something to my daughter.

After that, I went to the Armenian grocery store.  Not that I needed any groceries, as such, but, frozen puff pastry dough was on sale for $1.99/package and I wanted to stock up on them.  They are usually priced at $2.49 and, lately, I've seen them priced at $2.99, so I wanted to buy some to have on hand.  I'll probably make curry puffs with them the next time my daughter visits.  Then, since I was already there, I went ahead and did some grocery shopping for the week!  LOL!  Amazing what I can find to buy even when I "don't need" any groceries!

3/11 Groceries
I bought:
5 packages of frozen puff pastry @ $1.99 = $9.95
5 lb. bag of stone ground whole wheat flour = $4.99
1 container iodized salt = $.99
1+ lb. dried garbanzo beans/chickpeas @ $1.29/lb = $1.75*
1+ lb. beef shoulder steak @ $2.99/lb = $3.36
1 lb. red potatoes @ 3 lb/$1 = $.30
Green beans @ $.99/lb = $.58
1 cucumber @ 3/$1 = $.34
1 lb. carrots = $.39
1+ lb. apples @ $.49/lb = $.64
Total = $23.29

* garbanzo beans are for the appetizer I will be making to take to a family gathering on Saturday.  I have some already cooked in the freezer, but, I am not sure if that will be enough for the 40 or so people expected to attend this event.

3/11 Receipt

March grocery shopping budget = $75
Spent to date = $1.79 + $7.74 + $5 + $23.29 =   $37.82
Amount left in the March grocery budget = $75 - $37.82 = $37.18

On the way home, I bought a pepperoni pizza for $5.48, as I had been wanting pizza for several days.  But, it wasn't very good and I was disappointed.

In the evening, I took the big trash cans to the curb, watched news and two programs on the National Geographic channel, went through another file folder of stuff while I watched TV, and I dealt with today's mail, too.  Later, I video chatted with my daughter, who wanted my opinion about an outfit she had put together to wear to her office, tomorrow: a lilac dress with a grey jacket.  I approved her choice.

On Monday, I was grateful for:
- Being able to sleep in!
- Leisurely mornings
- Bargains at the grocery store
- Getting rid of another file of papers
- Video chatting with my daughter

  1. Our time change doesn't happen until the end of March but, as I'm now retired and don't need to get up early, I don't think it will really affect me.

    1. Yes, that's the good thing - I, too, don't need to get up all that early, anymore. But, I would like to fall asleep before 5:00 a.m. and wake up before noon! LOL. It was past 5:00 a.m. when I fell asleep last night! But, I set my alarm to wake up at 10:00 a.m. and actually got up when it went off!

  2. I don't know anyone who isn't having a problem with the time change. At least everyone at my house and at my work were not happy campers yesterday. But it will work itself out soon enough.

    1. Yes, it is a matter of adjusting. I set my alarm to wake up at 10:00 a.m., this morning. I know, that's already quite late in the morning, but, I didn't fall asleep until well past 5:00 a.m. I am hoping I'll be sleepy enough to fall asleep earlier, tonight.

  3. Yesterday my internal clock got me up at 7:30 which is my usual rising time (but 6:30 at the old time). In the afternoon I couldn't keep my eyes open and I fell asleep on the couch for hours. Even with the extra sleep, I didn't wake this morning until 8:30 (7:30 the old time), so hopefully I will now be adjusted to the time change. It is amazing how our bodies adjust to a slight time change. It is unnerving, actually.

It didn't feel like I was accomplishing much at home yesterday, so I also went out for a little shopping to pick up needed items. I also wrote out three cards to mail off to to my three youngest grands.

    1. I'm glad you got that extra sleep, Susan. My internal clock is messed up, to begin with, so now, I am going to sleep after 5:00 a.m. new time, and waking up at noon! But, I set my alarm and woke up at 10:00 a.m., today; hopefully, this will reset my internal clock. We'll see. :)

  4. I am having a very hard time with the change. I have always said I don't fully recover until they give me my hour back in the fall.
Need? Since when is this a grocery trip requirement?

    1. I guess we are all having a hard time with the time change, especially those of us who tend to be night owls!

Since when is need a grocery trip requirement, indeed! LOL!

  5. That's a really good deal on the puff pastry - even the 2.49! The cheapest I can find it is over $3. I suppose I could make my own (and I have before) but it's so time consuming and the other is just too convenient.

    1. It's a 17.5 oz. package of puff pastry and contains 8 pieces of pastry, each 5 inch square. That makes it $.25 per square, when I buy it at $1.99. I figure I would spend almost as much for butter, if I were to make it from scratch! It's been years since I made puff pastry from scratch!

  7. I've just been having a much needed catch up on your last week's posts. I had a small panic the other day when I read about the clocks, only to discover it's the end of the month here in the U.K. - panic over. I hope you adjust to it soon.
I hope you're being careful with the dusting since your asthma attack following your paper clear out. X

    1. Oops! Sorry about causing any confusion about the time changes! We decided we needed a longer period of daylight savings time! We go on it earlier and stay on it until the first weekend in November! I am sure I'll adjust in about a week or so. :)

Thank you for the reminder to be careful, Jules. I briefly thought about wearing a dust mask when I was dusting and vacuuming, today, but, did I wear one? Of course not! But, I am OK. Hope all is well with you and Lily.

  8. I find I am getting dressed later in the day. I think we'll get used to it. I know what you mean about finding things to buy at the grocery store. I am going less frequently as an experiment. i think that will help me to reduce my spending. I tend to overbuy produce when it's on sale.

    1. I'm not dressed until later in the day, myself, Stephenie. These days, because it is still so cold for me at night, I tend to wear sweatshirts and sweatpants to sleep in. Then, I tend to stay in them until later in the morning! But, I should get back into the habit of getting dressed as soon as I've had my morning tea, because, I've noticed that I don't feel like doing anything until I am dressed!

I like to go grocery shopping and do so at least once a week, sometimes twice! I do try not to buy too much at one time, especially fresh produce; sometimes, however, I still buy too much and then, the stuff spoils before I eat them and I feel bad about food waste!
