Early to Rise on Sunday

Flowers from the Garden

Today, two of my daughter's friends took her to Disneyland as their birthday gift to her.  They wanted to get an early start, (the park opens at 8:00 a.m., I believe),so they came to pick her up at 7:30 a.m.  I heard my daughter's alarm going off at 6:30 a.m.; I woke up a little after 7:00 a.m.  Considering I went to sleep well after 3:00 a.m., I didn't get a lot of sleep!  But, I was determined not to fall asleep again - I am hoping that this early rising will help reset my sleep patterns!

I spent a relaxed morning, after my daughter left.  I responded to blog comments, visited and commented on a few other blogs, participated on a social media group, called one of my cousins to wish her for her birthday, called a friend and left her a message (she called me back in the evening and we had a long chat), returned another friend's phone call, spoke with my neighbor T (our weekly Sunday morning phone call), and spoke with cousin P.

After lunch, I did a little mending - my daughter had two items of clothing where the seams were coming undone because they hadn't been sewn properly when they were serged.  I don't have a serger, but I sewed the seams by hand, backstitching them and then, doing a blanket stitch to "serge" the edges.

I picked some flowers from the garden for the living room mantel, today, and picked some lemons, too, for a centerpiece for the dining table.  I can't keep flowers on the dining table as Dancer tries to eat them, but, he tends to leave any fruit alone.  The crocheted table cover is one that my mother made.

Dining Table

In the evening, I watched news and knitted.  Then, did the dishes and took out the trash.  I also gave Dancer his flea prevention medication.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Daughter is having a fun day with her friends
- Knowing how to sew and mend clothes
- It didn't rain, after all!
- Phone calls with family and friends
- Leftovers!

Daughter returns to Berkeley, tomorrow.  Her birthday weekend will be over.

To Do List for Monday:
- Take daughter to the airport
- Do a load of laundry
- Vacuum the bedrooms and my bathroom
- Take the trash cans to the curb
- Start tidying my bedroom
- Paperwork/pay gas bill

How was your Sunday?  Did you have a good weekend?  What are your plans for the week ahead?

  1. I know you had a wonderful weekend with your daughter at home.
Sewing skills are something to be thankful for. My machine is in the shop and though I am not a great seamstress I really do need to do a little mending.

    1. It was a lovely weekend, Anne. I am so glad she was able to come down for her birthday, this year.

I hated sewing when I had to take sewing lessons at school - I could never get my stitches small enough or neat enough to please my sewing teacher and I spent more time unpicking than I did sewing! But, some of those lessons stuck with me, and these days, I am grateful that I was taught how to sew! My daughter does know how to sew, but, often, it is easier to ask Mom to do it, I guess! :D

  2. The flowers and lemons are so pretty, but I'm most impressed with how clean your dining room table is. Flat surfaces tend to accumulate things around here.

    1. Ha, ha, I am glad you are impressed, Live and Learn, because, I worked HARD to get that table cleared on Thursday! LOL! I've the same problem with flat surfaces accumulating stuff, over here, too! I had a sewing machine, my scrapbooking supplies, and piles of paper stacked on that table, before I cleared it!

Every time I clean it off, I tell myself, I will keep it cleared and, usually, that lasts a couple of days and that's it! Too often, I'll put down the day's mail on the table, intending to go through it later, and, before I know it, there will be a whole week's worth of mail piled up!

I am determined to keep the living room and dining table tidy - I am going to take 5 minutes, each night, before I go to sleep, to clear these spaces. Eventually, I'd like to extend that to the family room, as well, but, I've a bit more tidying to do there!

  3. The weekend went very quickly, didn't it?
We had rain last night. I think now I know how to get it to rain. I should spend 30-40 minutes watering plants, and it definitely rains in the night!
Your dining table looks very nice with the crocheted cover and the basket of fruits.

    1. Yes, it did go by quickly, Nil. Almost a bit too quickly! I want to slow down the time, when my daughter is home!

Too funny about you knowing how to make it rain! You might find a market for your rain making skills over here, the next time we have a drought! I know that one year, they even did a rain dance, here, during our recent drought, to try to get it to rain!

Thank you; I am making it a new goal to keep the dining table cleared!

  4. Hi Bless, You have such a great attitude. The weekend was lovely, but I forgot about a knitting group that I usually attend that meets the first Sunday of the month. Rats. I am filling a soap order and will mail it this afternoon. The weather is gorgeous, and I plan to head up to Ojai again mid week.

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. :) I'm sorry you forgot about the monthly knitting group! I'm sure you were missed, but, hopefully, you'll be able to make it, next month. I've been debating whether to give the local library's knitting group another try (5 mins. drive from home, but hardly anyone speaks English and I don't speak any Spanish, so can't participate in the conversation; everyone works on her own project) or look into one I read about that meets in a neighboring city (45 mins. - 1 hr. drive; no guarantee they speak English, either, but, apparently, they knit for charities, which is something I could get behind, as I already knit for the American Heart Association). I suppose I could give it a try.

Hope you are able to mail out your soap order. I took a peek at your Etsy site, the other day, and fell in love with practically everything shown and was telling my daughter about it. :)

  5. The flowers are gorgeous. The lemons on the dining table look spectacular. I won't be sharing photos of MY dining table any time soon. You cannot see the surface for all the papers on top.

It sounds like we both had wonderful weekends, but if it were a contest, you have easily won. I couldn't imagine a better weekend than having a daughter home and celebrating her birthday all weekend long. Hope there are some leftovers to enjoy for a little while longer.

    1. Thank you, Susan. Believe me, I wouldn't have posted any photos of my table before I cleared it! LOL! I had my sewing machine, my scrapbooking/card making stuff, some items I was going to donate, and piles of paper on the table! I seem unable to put things away after I am done using them!

It was a lovely weekend. I sent most of the leftovers back with her, but, there are some for me, too! :)

  6. I've been catching up on all your news at last. I was away for 5 days and came back to internet woes for a few days until at last a kind technician from our service provider came and spent over an hour and got DH and me back on line!
I am glad you and your daughter had a good, prolonged celebration of her birthday. Birthdays should always extend over several days. I hope she had a safe journey back to Berkeley. I almost wrote "home", and then I remembered that home is always where Mum is!
I love the photo of your table with the lace and the lemons. Of course you have to put "stuff" on it at times, homes are meant to live in, but it's always nice to tidy up and show the special side as well, isn't it?

    1. Bushlady, glad to see that you are back from visiting your son and back online, again!

Yes, well, my daughter would have been happy to have just spent a quiet weekend at home, but I was determined to make a fuss! She says I spoiled her, but, I wanted to. :) LOL, yes, her apartment is becoming home, to her, but, in her heart of hearts, home is right here and she still talks about wanting to come home, eventually.

The photo of the tidy table is a reminder to myself to try to maintain it! I am very bad at "erasing the evidence" by putting things away after I am done using them. I am challenging myself to keep the table cleared for the rest of this month! Let's see how long I can keep it cleared!
