Rain on Saturday

Flower Bulbs

I woke up to the sound of rain on Saturday morning, but, the rain cleared later in the morning and the rest of the day was clear, with some sunshine, although there were plenty of clouds in the sky.

We decided to drive to Hollywood to the little store from where I bought the medicated cream my doctor prescribed for my blood clot.  I am supposed to apply the cream three times a day and the tube of cream I bought after the doctor's appointment is coming to an end.  It looks like a tube will last me about 10 days or so and, while the leg is getting better (today was the first day it didn't hurt when I touched the blood clot area to rub the cream in), the clot is still there.  The doctor did say it would take two to three weeks or longer for it to go away.  So, I played it safe and bought three more tubes of the cream.

While at the store, I also bought some Armenian bread and two raisin buns for a treat.  I love raisin buns, but, the regular grocery store doesn't have them and I haven't had any since before the initial lockdown.

Then, we drove straight to the pharmacy close to my house to pick up my asthma inhaler that was ready for pick up.  I looked to see if they had another pair of compression socks, but, they didn't.  They also didn't have the other, arthritis pain cream the doctor had recommended I applied to the blood clot area for the pain, on their shelves, but, the store website says they have it, so, I might have to order it online.

We could have come home directly afterwards.  I really didn't need anything from the dollar store, nextdoor.  But, I wanted to get a box of microwave popcorn!  The regular popping corn kernels I had bought from the grocery store make perfectly good popped corn, but, they are not quite as soft as the microwave popcorn and I am not able to get them to taste like kettle corn, even after adding sugar to the popped corn.  Besides, I wanted to go in and see what else they had!  Daughter was agreeable (the dollar store near her apartment had closed and she hasn't been to a dollar store in a long time).  So, we went into the dollar store.

"We don't need a cart" I said, as we went in.  Ten steps inside the store, I sent daughter to get us a cart!  LOL.  They had large flower pots and M had been asking me if I had any larger flower pots to transplant the aloe vera and a few other plants.  The pots were plastic, but, at $2.50 each, they were a good price, I thought. I bought four flower pots!  They had flower bulbs for $1.49 a package of five bulbs each; I bought the four packages shown above - one each of gladioli, Dutch iris, Harlequin, and Peacock Orchids.  I bought a small metal trellis ($1.49) for one of the potted plants I have that is sprawling all over the place.  I bought a potted plant (a croton); they had bare root roses, too, for $9.99 each, but, they looked quite dead, without any signs of new growth on them.

Then, I bought a new broom.  I bought some scrubby sponges and a handled brush for the kitchen.  I bought a queen-sized sheet set (flat sheet, fitted sheet, 4 pillowcases) for $9.99 (cheaper than what I paid for the previous set on clearance from a different store; I now have two new summer sheet sets, to replace the old summer set, bought some 10 years ago, which is starting to get threadbare).  I bought some hair ties for my daughter.  I bought a bag of cotton balls because I had only a few left in the container at home.  I bought the microwave popcorn I wanted, a bag of plums, an iceberg lettuce, a container of iced coffee drink, a bottle of sparkling apple cider (cheaper than at the grocery store) and some other snacks!

By the time we made it to the check out, I had a cart full of items I didn't know I needed, but, definitely wanted when I saw them!  LOL.  But, everything I bought will be used.  Some of the items will go back with my daughter; some of the snacks will be enjoyed while she's down here (we had some of the plums and shared one of the bags of microwaved popcorn this evening), and the rest will be used over the next several months.  The difference is, I bought the items in person rather than ordering them online.

After we left the dollar store, we stopped by the subway sandwich store, next door!  I haven't had a subway sandwich in years!  Not since the pandemic, because it's not something I could order at a drive-through.  We each got a sandwich and we enjoyed that for a late lunch, with leftovers for dinner!

I did a load of laundry in the evening, chatted a bit with my aunt, and relaxed.  Plans for tomorrow include doing another load of laundry, and trying on some of those clothes I received from my cousin.

On Saturday, I was grateful for:

- Rain for the garden
- Safe drives to the shops and back
- The availability of medications
- Spending time with my daughter
- Working appliances

Saturday's joyful activity was shopping!  LOL.

How was your Saturday?  What are your plans for Sunday?

  1. We have a shop called Poundland... I have to be very disciplined when I stroll round (like you, I shun a trolley in an attempt not to overbuy) but I'm glad you and your daughter had a fun shopping trip together.

    1. Yes, I think our dollar store is the equivalent of your Poundland, although the items are no longer one dollar. It used to be that I'd go to the dollar store on a regular basis and buy the few items I needed (or wanted), but, I don't go as often now and felt that I should stock up. It was fun to shop with my daughter. :)

  2. Sounds like a lovely shopping spree with your daughter and buying all the things you will use. It's nicer shopping with someone you can discuss with rather than shopping alone or online. I'm glad you stocked upon the ointment for your leg and I hope it heals soon.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; yes, the leg is healing, but, I thought it was good to get a good supply of the ointment/cream. It was fun to shop with my daughter. :) I'd ask her, "Should I get this?" and she'd say, "Yes, you had mentioned you needed/wanted it". I have running lists of items I need from the different shops. :)

  3. Wow, you dollar store has a wide variety items. It sounds like a fun shopping trip. I keep eyeing some bulbs that I've seen in the stores, but don't have a place to put them presently, so I haven't gotten any yet. But I may break down soon. :)

    1. Yes, they do have a wide variety of items! Maybe you could plant the bulbs in a container or two? That way, you won't have to make a new flower bed. :)

    2. I'm considering growing my bulbs in a container, too. :)

  4. So lovely to read that you had an in-person browse around a shop and treated yourself to a few impulse purchases - whether wanted or needed! Hope the bulbs deliver and look forward to hearing how they do.

    1. Thank you, Ella. It was so much fun to browse in the store with my daughter. I keep a running list of items I want to buy from various stores (mostly because they are cheaper to buy from that particular store than online). It was easier when I used to shop in person more often; I'd buy a few items each week or two. I am hoping the bulbs will produce some nice plants and flowers. I didn't see any packets of vegetable or other flower seeds, or I would have bought some - they were on my list and I had mentioned them to M, too (although he doesn't believe the dollar store seeds are very good!)

    2. I had a comment half typed when it disappeared! I'll try again! (Apologies for double posting if that one goes through). It sounds like you had fun with your daughter at the dollar store. It was fun to read about all that you bought! I wAs going to order seeds today, but I forgot! I think the heavy snow fall distracted me. It looks pretty out. I'm staying in! The bulbs your got will be pretty when they bloom.

    3. So sorry that your comment disappeared on you, Celie. I hate it when that happens. I didn't receive the previous comment and I checked my spam folder, but, it didn't go there, either. So, thank you for reposting your comment.
Oh, I did have fun at the dollar store! Spent quite a bit of money, but, I got lots of things.
I hope you'll still be able to order your seeds; I'm sure you still have plenty of time to plant them. I do hope my bulbs will grow and bloom! I think I'll have M plant them in the front, in the bed running along side the driveway. There's room for them there and maybe, overtime, they might establish themselves. :)

  5. I’m having a nice quiet weekend. The rain stopped and today, Palm Sunday, is clear and cold.
What fun shopping at the dollar store! It’s like searching for hidden treasures because you never know what they’ll have. I would have been very excited about the gardening finds, especially Dutch flower bulbs at that price. It’s good to stock up on the medicine you need so you won’t have to go out again to buy it. The treats and deli sandwiches make a nice change after you’ve been doing all the cooking when you’re home on your own. ☺️

    1. I'm glad the rain stopped and you are having a nice, quiet weekend, Taconix. It rained here, today, but, now, at 6:00 p.m., the sun is shining!
I enjoyed my shopping at the dollar store! It's one of my favorite places to shop! I'm just going to pretend that I've been on vacation these few weeks with daughter home and enjoy eating from out and doing some shopping! I haven't been away on a proper vacation in a very long time. The last time I spent a night away from my home was in 2016 when I went to Berkeley for my daughter's graduation! :)

  6. "We don't need a cart." LOL. You had a great time in the dollar store and everything you found was worth buying and taking home! Those flower bulbs will add even more colour to your garden.

    1. Ha, ha, famous last words! I had a lovely time at the dollar store! Some people go to Vegas and spend their money at the slot machines; I go to the dollar store! But, I mostly bought useful things. Even the potted plant was an intentional purchase because I had been thinking of getting another potted plant for the house. I do hope the flower bulbs will yield some flowers, later this summer. :)

    1. Ha, ha! That should have been my blog post title! But, yes, I shopped practically till I dropped! That was the most walking I had done in a long time! I am thinking that I will start to shop in person a little more from now on. It feels a little less scary. :)

  9. p.s. What arthritis cream was it that your doctor recommended for your leg pain?

    1. It's Voltaren, Debra. The doctor gave me two sample sized tubes that she had received and I just ordered more from CVS, online (the pharmacy didn't have any on their shelves), along with a couple of spare compression socks (again, the store didn't have any on the shelves).
