On Thursday

Fresh Fruit Tart

On Thursday, I called the doctor's office at 8:00 a.m. (before they opened) and again at 9:00 a.m. (after they had opened) and left a couple of messages.  Then, when I didn't hear back from them within the hour, I messaged the doctor and the nurse called back a short time later, saying they had an opening at 1:30 p.m., if I would like to come in then.  I was happy to get that appointment.

I had originally planned to visit my cousins at 2:00 p.m., but, I let them know that I will have to push back the visit for later in the afternoon and they were both fine with that.

My daughter accompanied me to the doctor's office and the doctor confirmed that it was a blood clot, but, fortunately, it was a superficial thrombosis as opposed to a deep vein thrombosis which is more dangerous.  She was of the opinion that the superficial blood clot would go away after a few days.  She prescribed a blood thinner and gave me a topical ointment to apply for the pain.  She also prescribed a low dose aspirin and recommended I wear compression socks.

Afterwards, we went to a local store in the next block to pick up one of the ointments she recommended.  It was a tiny little ethnic store, with groceries, a deli, some take away food, as well as a small stock of over the counter medications and it was well patronized!

Then, we drove home and decided to go to my cousin's house, right away, having texted her that we were on our way.  We picked up a fruit tart from an Armenian bakery on the way and took it to my cousin's.  Cousin had put together a tray with cheese and crackers, stuffed peppers, and salami, etc., and my other cousin who was meeting us there brought some pastries (both savory and sweet) from a popular Cuban bakery.  So, we spent an hour or so visiting, chatting, and eating.  Just before we left, both cousins gave us several bags (five bags, to be exact!) of clothes they had decluttered!  We are to keep what we want and donate the rest.

On the way home, we stopped at the pharmacy to pick up the prescription my doctor had called in and I bought myself a pair of compression socks as well.

Then, we came home and had a cup of tea (me) and coffee (daughter).  Afterwards, I took a nap on the sofa!  I guess I was tired!

Later, my daughter went through the clothes and picked out the ones that she liked.  I will go through the remaining clothes to see if I want any of them.  I will offer the rest to my friend R and whatever she doesn't want will be donated.  If I do decide to take any clothes, I will have to declutter an equal number of items from my closet to make room for them!

On Thursday, I was grateful for:

- Being able to get a same day appointment to be seen by the doctor
- Access to medical care
- The availability of medications
- Visiting with my cousins and their gifts of clothes
- A safe drive to the clinic, to my cousin's, and back home

Thursday's joyful activity was visiting with my cousins.

Plans for Friday include doing some laundry and tidying, plus tending to the garden with M in the evening.

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

  1. What a relief you got an appointment with the doctor that day, and the clot turned out to be just superficial. My oldest sister has had clots and now always wears compression socks. She says Bombas brand are the most comfortable but expensive. I hope you recover quickly. Your cousin is very generous!

    1. Thank you, Celie. I just bought the CVS brand compression socks, but, I will order the brand that your sister wears, as well.
I do have some very generous cousins, don't I? :)

    1. Thank you, Mary-Lou. Yes, it was a big relief to be checked out by the doctor and she was able to reassure daughter, too, that it will be OK.
The fruit tart does look pretty, doesn't it? I thought it would be a healthier option than cake! :D
My cousins were very generous, weren't they? Some of the clothes still had tags on them! My daughter and I won't need to buy clothes for a long time!

  3. When you described your leg pain, I wondered if it were a blood clot. I'm glad that it's not a deep one and I hope you will feel better soon. There's never a shortage of food in your life, Bless, and everyone shares so freely. That tart is beautiful.

    1. Yes, it was a blood clot and thankfully, not a deep one! Hopefully, it'll be the first and the last one, too!
You are right; there is no shortage of food in my life and everyone is very generous. That bakery has the most beautiful fruit tarts and other pastries! I avoided the eclairs, cream puffs, and at least a dozen varieties of cakes and picked the tart!

  4. That’s a relief to have the blood clot diagnosed and being treated. It’s so much worse when you don’t know what is wrong. I hope it heals quickly.
The fruit tart is beautiful. Sounds like a really nice gathering.
Good plan to make room in your wardrobe for the new clothes by replacing old clothes. I’m still going through mine for donations, although I have winnowed down some.
I’m working in person today and spent most of yesterday preparing. Hard to believe I used to go in 5 days a week. 😬

    1. Thank you, Taconix; yes, good to have a diagnosis and the treatment.
The fruit tart looks lovely, doesn't it? It was lovely to get together with my cousins. We used to see each other at least once a month, before the pandemic and then, I was reluctant to attend any gatherings afterwards. Yesterday's gathering was maskless (can't eat with masks on!) and I was nervous, but, I am keeping my fingers crossed that it was safe!
I am going to be very selective about what I keep of the new clothes, but, it is a blessing to be given so many outfits!
Hope you enjoyed your day at the office. I guess we get used to things like going into the office every day, when we have to.
Hop you have a lovely weekend in which to relax. :)

  5. So glad you were able to get a prompt diagnosis and appropriate medications quickly and easily. I hope the issue is soon resolved. I spent Thursday at my daughter's cottage "house sitting" waiting for builders who did not turn up! Fortunately I'd taken sewing tasks and that kept me busy. This morning I had breakfast with a friend, then washed my car. This afternoon I shall do more sewing.

  6. That fruit tart looks delicious. I'm so pleased you were able to get a same day doctor's appointment and the swelling wasn't as bad as you had feared and I hope the ointment helps take he pain away. I hope their are some nice clothes items for you to keep, a generous gift from your cousins.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. Yes, both my daughter and I are happy that I was able to see the doctor right away; it was reassuring to be told that it wasn't too serious a condition.
The tart was delicious - it had a very crumbly cookie like base and a sort of pastry cream and the fruit on top.
My cousins have been very generous with their gifts of clothes. Some of the clothes still had their tags on them! I was too tired to try on the clothes, yesterday, but, I'll try them on, today, and then, decide what to keep and what to give away. :)

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. It felt good to be reassured by the doctor that the clot wasn't too serious. I have an appointment to see her again, at the end of May (it was made during my previous visit), so there will be a follow up, then. Unless I feel the need to see her before that!
The tart is very pretty, isn't it?

  9. I am SO glad you got it checked out! Aunt Jane had a blood clot once (one of the bad ones) and she ended up in the ICU after it broke off and travelled up to her lungs! She had gone to the doctors and they told her it was nothing! It wasn't until she collapsed at home that they realised it wasn't nothing.
    Hope it feels better soon!
    The tart is really beautiful.

    1. Thank you, Sharon; I'm glad I got the blood clot checked. Oh, poor Aunt Jane! My doctor, too, said it wasn't anything serious, and I am sincerely hoping that she is right! :D

  11. Ooooooooooooh! This is the tart you emailed about! I had only just got over the waffles and now I am faced with this! Where can I get one of these!?
Most of this post seems to have overlapped with your email so no need to repeat it all in my comment. Hope all is progressing nicely with the treatment.

    1. Yes, this is the fruit tart I was writing about. :) I bought it from an Armenian bakery; maybe you'll be able to find one in one of your bakeries there? Perhaps a bakery with European treats?
My leg is responding to the treatment, but, taking a little time to recover fully.

    2. I can say with certainty that I have never seen anything so beautiful in any bakery here, and if I did find one, I am sure it would require a second mortgage to buy! Well I hope it was delicious. (Hrumph.)

    3. It was very delicious, but, not overly sweet. There is a sort of crumb base (probably made with some sort of digestive biscuits, I'm thinking; not graham crackers) with a layer of pastry creme which is sweet. Then, the fresh fruit arranged on top. I'm sure you could make something similar. :)

    4. Not happening! Instead you can scrap our planned dinner menu and I will just bring a couple of these over - one each, yeah? (Or one to share, and one to keep as an ornament.)

    5. LOL, one to share would be just right; you need to keep room for the watalappan pudding, too! :D

  12. I'm so glad you were able to see the doctor quickly and that she was able to diagnose your blood clot. You were wise to react quickly.
Was there a bulge on your leg where the clot is/was? What part of your leg is it on? Hope you don't mind my questions.
I hope you are feeling better and the clot has started to dissipate.

5 bags of clothing and los of yummy food.
What a day you had. I would've been tired too :)

    1. Thank you, Debra. My daughter urged me to be seen by the doctor sooner rather than later and I'm glad that she did so. The blood clot was in the back of my calf; I felt a pain and saw a redness and when I touched it, there was like a hard lump or swelling. I couldn't see a bulge, but, my daughter said she could see a slight swelling. But, most of it was inside the leg. Touching the area was painful. Today was the first day the leg felt well enough to be touched without it hurting and the area of the hard lump seems to be getting smaller.
I still haven't tried on the clothes my daughter decided she didn't want/didn't fit her. Maybe I'll do that, tomorrow.
