March Grocery Shopping: Part 1

March Groceries (3/7/24)

I ordered and picked up groceries, today.  It was a bright, mostly sunny day with no rain in the forecast,  Then, around 3:00 p.m., the clouds moved in and it started to rain just as I left the house to pick up the groceries.  As I drove towards the grocery store, the skies were clear on one side of me and dark grey on the other!  Eric saw me pull up into the parking spot and he brought the groceries to the car even as I was struggling to log into the account to notify the store that I was there, which was very kind of him (I gave him a good review on the store survey after I got home.  I apologized to him for having to bring the groceries out in the rain and he apologized for the fact that the grocery bags were wet!  There was even some lightning and thunder when I got home!  It rained for a couple of hours before it stopped.

Today, I bought:

Broccoli crown, 0.69 lb. @ $1.98/lb, = $1.37

5 cans tuna in water, $1@ = $5.00

Pork "Boston butt" shoulder roast, 10 lbs. (!) on sale at $2.99/lb. = $30.02
(I didn't think to specify how big a roast I wanted, like 5-6 lbs.; I think they gave me the biggest one they had!)

Eggs, 1 doz. large = $4.49

1 loaf white sandwich bread = $2.49
1 doz. mini croissants, reg. price $4.99, with coupon = $4.19

2 boxes cheese crackers, reg. price $4.99@, on sale for $1.99 @ with digital coupon plus multi buy discount = $2.98

(I will be keeping this one for my own use)

1/2 gal. half & half = $5.49

Yogurt, 32 oz., reg. price $4.79, on sale for $4.29, with coupon = $3.69
Ice cream, 2 x 14 oz. containers (1 coffee, 1 butter pecan), buy one get one free = $5.99
(a more expensive brand than I normally buy, but, we are celebrating a birthday!)

According to the receipt:

Original item total = $153.20
Coupons and sales = - $69.28
Order total = $83.92

March Grocery Budget = $100 + $17.59 carried over from February  = $117.59

Spent to date = $83.92

Balance remaining = $33.67

I am not sure quite what I am going to do with 10 lbs. of pork!  But, I'll make a curry with some of it, a stir fry with some, maybe cut a couple of shoulder steaks to pan fry, and, of course, my daughter can take some of the cooked meat back with her,

Once I came home and put away the groceries, I had two of the mini croissants with butter and peach jam for brunch.  Then, put away the last load of dried laundry from yesterday.  Later, I watched the State of the Union address, watched some other TV, called and spoke with friend R, and video chatted with my daughter.  I wasn't very hungry for dinner, so I ate two more croissants!  I'll probably have some fruit before I go to sleep.

Today, I am grateful for:

- More rain for the garden!
- Being able to order groceries online and curbside pick up
- Helpful store personnel
- A safe drive to the grocery store and back
- Working appliances

Today's joyful activity was video chatting with my daughter.

The yellow throated bird was back, today, but, it was not the only bird to help itself to the cat food:

Chicken Little and Mama Cat

Notice Mama Cat moving her head to the side
to make room for Chicken Little!

Mama Cat does not tolerate Patches the calico cat, but, she tolerates Chicken Little!

  1. Mama Cat may have some previous encounters with pecking from Chicken Little (col). How kind that you feed the neighbourhood "wild" life.

    1. Mama Cat says she's hen pecked! LOL. The chicken belongs to the neighbors but it spends most of its days in my backyard!

  2. Sometimes I will buy a largish leg of pork joint and cut it in half to freeze, it's a good job I have knives I can sharpen. How nice to be given a box of Cheerios for free. My husband has Cheerios most mornings for breakfast and shares some with Tilly. That may have to stop as the vet told me yesterday to cut down her food portions. It's all the extra treats she gets that are making her put on too much weight. I don't want to kill her with kindness!
Mama Cat is amazing how she shares her food with Chicken Little, I can hardly believe it so thank you for your photos :)

    1. I'll probably cut the pork up into sections and I'm sure I can distribute some of the cooked meat to friends and neighbors, too. :) I'm glad I was able to choose a cereal I can eat rather than more frosted flakes! Oh, poor Tilly has to go on a diet, like most of us! Ration those treats! Mama Cat won't share her food with Patches the calico cat who has to wait until Mama Cat has eaten her fill and moved away, but, she lets Chicken Little share! It is the funniest thing!

    1. I have had some very nice people helping me with the grocery pick ups! Mama Cat and Chicken Little are too funny! Never mind the poem about the Owl and the Pussycat; I have to write one about the Chicken and the Pussycat! :D

  4. How lovely that your groceries were so promptly brought out in the rain. A good employee! Looks as though you will have great menus for your daughter’s stay, especially for her birthday celebration.
The detente between Mama Cat and Chicken Little seems so unlikely and it just makes me smile.

    1. I agree, it was wonderful that the groceries were brought out without delay. They are probably thinking, "This poor middle aged lady can't handle her new phone!" LOL. We are planning to have some good home cooking (and a few restaurant take out meals) to celebrate this week! :D
Mama Cat and Chicken Little make me smile every time I see them together. Mama Cat likes to nap under one of the lemon trees and Chicken Little has made herself a little hollow under the other lemon tree and I see her settled in there from time to time.

  5. I love seeing chickens! I just bought some pork and roasted it with sauerkraut. I have been buying cheerios because I saw they have 70% iron. Your garden (last post) looks beautiful! andrea

    1. Thank you, Andrea. The garden is coming along nicely with all the rain we've been having!
The chicken belongs to the neighbors, but, it's in my garden most of the time!
I like roast pork, but, I am not a big fan of sauerkraut! Oh, that's good to know about the iron content in Cheerios! I had to take iron supplements, at one time.

  6. I love the "dinner party"! They make quite the pair, don't they? I think the sight of that 10 lb pork roast must have put you off your food! I'm sure you will make good use of it. I haven't bought Cheerios for ages but they were a good standby when DS was little. I could take some in a little sealed pot for him to munch on when he needed a snack, knowing that he wasn't getting a lot of sugar. Years later the company put out some containers to use for toddlers!

    1. The dinner companions remind me of the poem, "The Owl and the Pussycat" except, in this instance, it's The Chicken and the Pussycat! LOL.
The pork roast had me staring at it in disbelief! We will definitely make use of it. I won't have to buy pork for months!
My daughter, too, loved Cheerios when she was little. I like them, too. :)

  7. Oh what a wonderful photo!
It sounds like your grocery store worker really is a joy. It's lovely that you leave good feedback for him. More often than not, customers only say something when it's negative!

Yes, the store workers have been very nice on the whole. I like to recognize good service, especially when workers go out of their way to be helpful. :)

  8. Such a nice grocery picture.
Free Cereal! And Cheerios :) You can't beat that.
You got a really good price on those Cheeze Its. And the Hagen Daz too. My husband enjoys the Haagen Daz pints. They are on sale this week for $3.69 so your sale is much better. You will figure out what to do with that large roast.
Such a sweet picture of Mama cat and Chicken Little eating together.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Yes, free Cheerios! I will keep that for myself!
I did get a good price on the Cheez-Its, didn't I? And the ice cream. I usually don't splurge out on that brand because it is so expensive, but, I decided that it was a good deal at that price. I think I have enough pork to last me for the rest of this year! LOL.
The cat and the chicken make me laugh when I see them together. :D
