She's Home!

Birthday Gift - Beaded Necklace

My daughter came home last night!  After all the uncertainty if she'd be able to come home or not, she and two of her friends drove down, late last night.  While I waited for her to come home, I made her bed with flannel sheets and washed the sheets I had on her bed, earlier.  I had help making the bed:

Dancer Helped

Then, I vacuumed the house and tidied the place, doing all the little things I had procrastinated doing until I was sure that she was able to come down and was on her way home!

Daughter came home at 11:00 p.m.  I had dinner ready and waiting - sauteed salmon, garlicky sauteed green beans, cucumber salad, and rice.  Then, we stayed up and chatted for a bit.  She gave me the beaded necklace that she had made as part of my birthday gifts from her, a souvenir T-shirt from her trip to Hawaii in February, and a few other items she had picked up for me.  She also brought back all the empty canning jars from the jams and chutney I had sent up to her.

Today, after a leisurely morning, we went to the Sri Lankan restaurant.  I had called ahead and ordered a meal of stringhoppers (a type of noodles made with rice flour and steamed) which comes with coconut sambol, kiri hodhi (coconut milk based gravy with turmeric) and a hard boiled egg added to it, and a choice of fish, chicken, beef, or mutton curry (I chose chicken) and a meal of pittu (finger millet flour, made into little balls of dough like couscous and steamed in a hollowed out bamboo) which comes with katta sambol, coconut milk, and the same choice of curry (I chose beef curry).  I also ordered some cutlets (the round balls - they have a spicy fish filling and are breaded and fried) and patties (pastries with a spicy fish filling), and for dessert, a pudding called watalappan, made with coconut milk, jaggery, eggs, and spices.

Dinner and Snacks

Dessert: Watalappan Topped with Crushed Cashew

On the way home, we stopped by the Sri Lankan store (a few blocks from the restaurant) and did a little shopping.  I mostly wanted a bottle of palm treacle, a bottle of chili sauce, and some incense sticks, but, we bought some snacks, as well.  This is the one store where I will buy what I want without looking at the price!  I spent $36.89 at the Sri Lankan store.

After we came home, my daughter took some of the patties over to neighbor S and visited with S and her daughters for a bit.

Today, I called and invited my late friend A's husband and two daughters to share Thanksgiving dinner with us.  When A was alive, we used to go to her house for Thanksgiving.  Last year, she was in the hospital on Thanksgiving day and we had dinner in her hospital room, seated around her bed.  This is her family's first Thanksgiving without her.  This is the first time I'm having people over when I know I will be without a mask (hard to have people over to dinner and wear a mask!), but, I couldn't be without inviting them to Thanksgiving.  I ordered the turkey and the rest of the items needed for Thanksgiving dinner this evening and will pick up tomorrow.

Today, I am grateful for:
- My daughter came home safely
- Her friend for driving her down
- The gifts my daughter brought me
- Having a Sri Lankan restaurant and store nearby
- Being able to invite friend A's family to Thanksgiving dinner

Today's joyful activities included spending the day with my daughter and eating some delicious Sri Lankan food!

Plans for tomorrow (Monday) include picking up the groceries and some WD40 (a lubricant - my sliding glass door has stopped sliding!)

  2. Beautiful necklace that your daughter gave you. So glad she was able to get home to celebrate Thanksgiving with you. Will she work from home for a few days before the Thanksgiving break? I am sure you will enjoy having friends in for dinner. Dancer looks thoroughly pleased with his efforts in bed making :)

    1. Thank you, Mary-Lou. My daughter has taken three days of vacation and she gets Thursday and Friday as holidays. She did bring her work computer with her, just in case there was an urgent need for her to work from home. Dancer does look pleased with himself, doesn't he? :D

  3. Oh good - your daughter is home for a nice visit. And you are off to a good start with a wonderful dinner waiting for her followed up the next day by a wonderful carry-out meal.
Oh my that all looked so good.
You mentioned the hardboiled egg in the one gravy. That reminded me of the first time I every had curry. I was in my early 20's and a friend invited a few of us over for dinner. She made curry and had many little bowls of toppings one of which was chopped hardboiled egg. I'd forgotten that until you mentioned it being in the kiri hodhi. Is hardboiled egg a typical addition? I've not seen it again since that time many years ago but I enjoyed it sprinkled on top of my curry. (She also had sliced banana which is another thing I've not seen but I liked that too along with shredded coconut and raisins.) I'm going to include the chopped egg next time I make a curry and see if it's as pleasing as I remember.
I imagine friend A's family really appreciated your kind invitation for Thanksgiving. I'm sure you will all enjoy the day together.

    1. Yes, daughter is home and we've had a couple of really nice meals (we had leftovers from the Sri Lankan restaurant meal for lunch, today). The kiri hodhi is basically coconut milk cooked with turmeric, curry leaves, onions, etc. It is quite common to add hard boiled eggs to it or potatoes. My mother used to beat up an egg and stir it into the gravy because I don't generally like hard boiled eggs.
I think A's family was happy to be invited; one of the daughters texted me today to ask if there is anything they should bring and I said just bring themselves. I bought the turkey and pies, today, along with potatoes, some salad, and whipped cream. :)

    1. Thank you, Celie; yes, it's wonderful to have my daughter home and I love the necklace she made for me. It was definitely a feast from the Sri Lankan restaurant and the husband and wife team who run the restaurant told me that I was spoiling my daughter! Then, when I told them that she is visiting after a long time, they jokingly chided her for being away for so long, telling her it's time she came back home to be with me! LOL.
I picked up the Thanksgiving groceries, today. I didn't want A's family to be alone on Thanksgiving.

  7. I'm finally catching up with your blog after our trip and my health issues. It will be good to get back into some sort of routine. The necklace your daughter made is stunning, she is so talented. I love that you are going to be together with her and that you invited your dear friend's family for Thanksgiving dinner. It will be bitter/sweet but good memories will be shared.

  10. That's a very nice necklace. Hope you enjoy wearing it - is it kumihimo?
There is something special about sharing a meal. Great idea to get food from the Sri Lankan restaurant to share, and I'm so glad you are having people over for Thanksgiving. I hope it all goes smoothly and you have a great time.
I may have told you this story before, but I remember being served curried eggs for the first time and finding it so strange! My Uncle had offered me eggs for breakfast, and I assumed they would be scrambled or fried, then these boiled eggs arrived with onions and sauce ... it never occured to me that there would be curry at breakfast time, but even later in the day I would have been surprised by that particular dish!

    1. Thank you, Ella; the necklace is made of beads strung on a single thread, so I don't think it is kumihimo (had to look it up and the article said kumihimo consists of multiple cords that are interwoven).
Yes, there is a sense of community and a communion of sorts in sharing a meal, isn't there? I am hopeful that the Thanksgiving meal will go smoothly. My garbage disposal broke, last night, and there was water leaking all over the kitchen, before we realized what had happened! It was replaced this morning. I'm hoping that nothing else will go wrong!
I think you had mentioned having curried eggs for breakfast when you visited your Uncle one year. My mother used to make an omelet curry that I, too, make from time to time. You make the curry sauce/gravy and add cut up omelet to it. :)
