Birthday Weekend Continues

Lunch: Rice and Curries

I had a phone call from my friend S in the early afternoon, asking me if I was at home.  I answered, "Yes", and asked why.  "Oh, we just want to stop by for a minute to drop something off."  She is the friend who makes some of the most delicious Sri Lankan rice and curries and I had a suspicion what the "something" would be.  I quickly picked a bag of fresh curry leaves from the garden to give her.

She, her husband, and their daughter came by a few minutes later, and brought me a homecooked Sri Lankan rice and curry meal - rice, jackfruit curry, mango curry, and salted dry fish fried with onions and tomatoes.  When I thanked her, she brushed aside my thanks, saying it was just half a meal as she couldn't make half the things she had planned to make!  I told her that it was more than enough!

I noticed that my friend's right hand was bandaged up and I asked her what happened.  She was in a fight, she joked, a boxing match.  Apparently, she burned her hand when a pan of hot oil spilled over while she was cooking, last night!  Oh my goodness!  And she still brought me a birthday meal?  She was going to see a burn specialist, tomorrow, she said.  We visited for a few minutes (I had my mask on).  As always, before she left, she told me to let her know if there was anything I needed!  I told her to let me know if there was anything I could do to help her, at least until her hand healed!

It was another sunny day, and it was warmer outside than it was inside the house.  I sat outside at my little patio table to have my morning cup of tea and to say my morning prayers.

In the afternoon, I read a few more chapters of the library book and chatted for a bit with friend R.  Friend S had taken her a container of food, as well.

Later, in the early evening, neighbor S called me - she had made some baklava and would I like to have some?  How could I refuse homemade baklava?

Homemade Baklava for Dessert

I told neighbor S that I will share it with my daughter when she comes home, next week.  She said that's why she gave me four pieces - two for me, two for my daughter.  I put the pieces in a container and put them in the fridge.

Thank you, everyone, for your lovely birthday wishes.  I appreciate them all.  I know that some people don't like to celebrate their birthdays as they get older, but, I want to celebrate each and every one!  Each birthday is a milestone, I think.  When I was diagnosed with cancer at 59, I was unsure if I would live long enough to see my 60th birthday, later that year!  I think of each birthday since then as a blessing, a gift to treasure, and a bonus.

Moving forward, I want to make the best of each day I'm privileged to live.  Not quite sure how I'm going to do that, but, I want to have no regrets about each day when I go to sleep.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Friend S and her family bringing me a birthday meal
- Neighbor S bringing me some of her homemade baklava
- An afternoon spent reading
- A warm and sunny day
- Being able to order something online (Dancer's favorite cat food) and have it delivered to the doorstep

Today's joyful activity was having my friends visit me.

Plans for tomorrow include doing a load of laundry, some tidying and cleaning, and taking the trash cans to the curb for Tuesday morning pick up.

How was your weekend?  What are your plans for Monday?

  1. Those curries look so delicious. I thought of you while I was making my mackerel curry last night. I'm hoping I can fend of this virus by eating copious amounts of ginger and garlic :)

    1. They were delicious, Jules. My friend is a very good cook! Yay! You made mackerel curry! I was planning to make some, too, but, then, I changed my mind and had beef curry (from the freezer), instead! I hope you recover from that virus, soon. Maybe see a doctor for some medications?

  2. I am so thrilled that you had such a wonderful birthday weekend, so many kind friends. And food gifts are the best - they are enjoyable and they don't add clutter! I'm sorry to read of your friend's accident. I hope her hand heals quickly. Thank you for the reminder about trash cans - my neighbour's daughter completely filled her bins as she cleared her Mum's house (A is moving to Scotland today) But the bin men ignored them last week (I think it's because they know the house has been empty for a while) I shall pull them right out before they come on Tuesday. Our fencing men are due to arrive in 5 minutes... I should probably get out of my pj's...

    1. Thank you, Angela. Yes, many kind friends and food gifts are the best! Nothing to declutter, but, they do add to my girth! :D
I hope your neighbor's bins get emptied on Tuesday and hope you were ready before the fencing men arrived!
(There is a duplicate post from you and I am going to delete it).

  4. Your friend is so kind to bring you a meal when she was most likely in so much pain from the burn on her hand, I can't imagine how painful a hot oil burn must be, poor lady. Those baklava look very tasty too, how kind to bring a couple for your daughter too.
I want to say congratulations to you on being a breast cancer survivor, three years for me too. I had a conversation recently with my sister who said with her health problems she thought she was going to die and that resonated with me too. I love when you say each birthday is a blessing, a gift to treasure and a bonus, it certainly is xx

    1. I know, Eileen; I couldn't believe she brought me food when she had burned her hand and she did admit to being in pain! I hope her visit with the burn specialist goes well, tomorrow.
Wasn't it kind of neighbor S to bring enough baklava to share with my daughter? I have put them aside to save them for when my daughter comes home.
Thank you, Eileen; each birthday is a blessing as it means we've been given another 365 days to enjoy and, perhaps, make a difference! Congratulations to you, too, for having survived. :)

    1. Congratulations on passing the 5 year mark, FD. That is a major milestone, isn't it? Birthdays and yummy food go together, don't they? I ate a tiny sliver of the baklava and put the rest in one of the fridge drawers to keep until my daughter comes home!
I will be calling my friend this evening to find out what the specialist had to say about her hand. I hope that the burn wasn't too severe.

  9. More goodies! Yesterday's cakes looked great and now all these! (I thought you didn't like jackfruit curry...!) Was it fresh or tinned? Anyway I am glad people spoiled you, and I hope S's burn heals quickly with little scarring.

    1. Yes, more goodies! I don't normally like jackfruit curry, but, this time, it tasted good! There was none of the usual sourness! I'm wondering if it was fresh jackfruit and not tinned. I didn't ask my friend, though. I called her today to inquire about her hand and she said that she met with the specialist, today, and there is some talk about possible surgery. She has to go back in two days time to have the wounds dressed, again.

  11. And the treats keep rolling in. Such delicious looking food and so kind of everyone to bring you them.
You've mentioned friend S' curries before so I know you must've really enjoyed that delivery.
I am one of those people that brushes off my birthday as I get older but I will now think of your words and not concentrate so much on getting older and be more mindful how wonderful it is to be alive so thank you for that.
