Friday and Saturday

Friday Morning 55F

It was about 55F inside the house on Friday morning!  This hot house flower is getting frost bitten!  LOL!  Outside was warmer and sunny; I opened the windows to try and get some of that warmth inside!  Eventually, the house warmed up to 62F in the afternoon!

I did a load of laundry in the morning and hung everything to dry inside the house.  Then, I called the grocery store to find out if Jennifer was there and was told that she wasn't.  Next time, I'll call the day before to make sure she'll be there and then bake the brownies!

I picked up my groceries on Friday at noon.  I received almost all of the groceries I had ordered; the only item they didn't have was a loaf of French bread I had requested.  But, I received the loaf of sandwich bread I had also requested and I was happy.

Afterwards, I drove to the library to drop off my ballot in the ballot drop box located there.

In the afternoon, neighbor S brought over some nut filled puff pastries she had made:

Nut Filled Puff Pastries

The nut filling is similar to the filling used in baklava, but, without the syrup that is poured over baklava.  I had a small piece and froze the rest to share with my daughter, who finds baklava to be too sweet with the syrup.  I offered S some of the brownies that I had baked in exchange!

Later in the evening, M arrived to tend to the garden and he enjoyed a couple of pieces of the brownies.

The Peach Tree Thinks it's Spring!

I cooked the shrimp I had bought (made a curry) and cooked a pot of rice, too, and had that for dinner, along with some peach chutney.

Then, I video chatted with my daughter.  She had an early morning flight to Boston, to attend a work-related conference.  The flight was scheduled for 6:00 a.m. and her boarding time was around 5:30 a.m.  She wanted to get to the airport by 4:30 a.m., one hour before boarding, just in case there were long lines and delays at the check-in and security clearance, etc.  Since she was flying out from San Francisco airport and it takes about 40 minutes to get from Berkeley to the SF airport, she booked a ride too pick her up before 3:30 a.m., to give herself plenty of time to get to the airport in case there were road delays.  She also dislikes flying and nervous; her plan was to stay up all night and then, hopefully, sleep in the plane.

I, too, was a bit anxious on her behalf; especially about her taking a ride in the middle of the night!  Yes, she's an independent adult, but, one hears some horror stories about young women taking rides.  So, I stayed up, all night, too, to make sure she got her ride, arrived safely at the airport, and boarded her flight, etc. ("Text me when the ride picks you up, text me when you get to the airport, call me when you board the flight, call me when you get to Boston"; "Yes, Ammi. I will, Ammi")  LOL.  She called me when she boarded the plane just before 5:30 a.m. and that's when I went to sleep!  Then, she called me when she arrived at the Boston airport; apparently, it had been a very bumpy flight due to turbulence, but. she managed to sleep.  She had to take a bus from the airport to the hotel and although she had booked the room ahead of time, she had to wait until a room became available (a double room that she will share with her supervisor, once her supervisor arrives on Monday).

Fortunately, she has some friends who are in Boston (including one who was there to attend a different conference and another friend from middle school days who is now living in Boston).  In the evening, her friends picked her up from the hotel and they did an escape room, had dinner, and she was dropped off at the hotel, later in the evening.  So, she had a fun evening.  The conference starts tomorrow and ends on Wednesday.  She flies back on Wednesday night.

I slept until 1:00 p.m. and it was, once again, colder indoors (but not quite as cold as it had been on Friday morning) and warmer outdoors!  I walked about the garden and sat outside for awhile to warm up.

Aunt C called in the afternoon and I had a long chat with her.  Later, I called friend R and chatted with her.

Breakfast had been a banana.  I made a cucumber salad and had that with leftover rice, shrimp curry, and peach chutney for what turned out to be the main meal of the day (a late lunch/early dinner).  A brownie for dessert!  I thought I might have some soup later in the night, but, snacked on Cheetos, instead!  Oops!

I had the space heater on in the evening, but, I've since turned it off.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Daughter had a safe ride to the airport and a safe flight
- She was able to meet up with some friends to have a fun evening
- Being able to sit in the garden and enjoy the sunshine and the warmth
- Space heaters!
- Chats with family and friends

Today's joyful activity was chatting online with my daughter after she got back to the hotel room.

Plans for tomorrow include sorting through some mail and doing paperwork.

How is your weekend coming along?

  1. I'm glad your daughter enjoyed a smooth journey and arrived safely. It's always a relief to recieve that call and know they are okay.
My weekend so far has involved sparklers and bonfire toffee! But this morning I have written my meal plan for the week and I will be going to the supermarket very soon. Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules. Sometimes, I think that Worry is my middle name! :)
Oh, sparklers and bonfire toffee sounds like a lovely way to spend part of the weekend! But, meal plans and grocery shopping are needed, too. Hope you find good deals at the store. :)

  2. I understand your concern for your daughter - every time we part, I say to mine "I love you, have a safe journey, message me when you're home safely"... and I will continue to say that. Especially when they travel at night or in bad weather. We had a Turkish meal on Friday night at a lovely restaurant in Norwich - the desserts were baklava type pastries - delicious but VERY sweet!

    1. Thank you, Angela. I was especially worried about her taking a ride service at night, by herself, not that worrying did anything to help, but, it all worked out just fine. :)
Sounds like you enjoyed your Friday night meal. Any meal that ends with baklava is a hit with me! :D

  3. I had another friend who had an early morning flight and stayed up all night to accommodate all of the logistics. I need regular sleep. That would be hard for me to do, but I guess I could if I needed to. Glad your daughter made it there safe and sound, and she's getting a chance to connect with old friends.

    1. I had urged her to try and take a nap before she needed to leave for the airport, but, she was too wound up to relax enough to take a nap. It was easier for her to stay up and sleep on the plane. I suppose it also helped her to adjust to the time change as she was tired enough to fall asleep at a decent hour according to Boston time (3 hours ahead of us). Yes, I'm happy that she was able to spend the evening with friends. :)

  4. I'm glad you daughter's journey passed without incident and she reached her hotel safe and sound. It's lovely that she is able to meet up with her friends while she is there.

It's a shame Jennifer wasn't on duty to receive her brownies but at least you were able to share them with M and S.

My weekend has been good thanks. Very quiet yesterday and today I'm in the kitchen cooking up the odds and ends I found lurking at the back of the freezers.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; I, too, am glad she made it there safely and got to meet up with friends, as well. :)
Yes, I'm sorry Jennifer missed out on the brownies. But, I'll make more when I do my Thanksgiving meal shopping, mid-month.
Sounds like a good way to spend the weekend. I should check to see what I have lurking in my freezer! I'm positive there are more packages of zucchini in there! :D

  5. I am glad your daughter arrived safely to her conference in Boston.
I would be the same as you, worrying until I knew she was safe. I'm glad you were able to get some rest once she was safely underway and that she was able to sleep on the plane. Especially since she had such a busy night with her friends. How nice that she was able to catch up with them on the east coast.

I am glad tomorrow is Monday so you can warm up your entire house when you want.
I think it's warmer where I am which is strange lol
It was 70 degrees inside of my home this morning - 64 outside.

Those pastries from neighbor S look delicious. I made some soup early this morning. Leftover cooked broccoli, a few potatoes, red lentils etc and then pureed it and had a cup for breakfast - along with my peanut butter toast :)

    1. Thank you, Debra. As I mentioned in my reply to a comment above, Worry seems to be my middle name! Not that it helps to worry, but, I tend to reassure my daughter that everything will be fine and worry inside! She's the same! I guess it's how we show we care. :)
I'm glad that she was able to catch up with some friends and do some fun activities together. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets together with some of them again, tonight, too. It'll be a good distraction from her being nervous about giving a presentation at the conference, tomorrow.

I'm glad the furnace will be inspected, tomorrow! It's supposed to be colder (forecast says a high of 61F) and rainy tomorrow through Wednesday. I might be tempted to turn the heater on even if it wasn't safety inspected! LOL.
My daughter said that Boston was supposed to be in the low to mid 70s during her stay! That's warmer than Berkley! It's 71F outside and something like 62F inside! I have the doors and windows open and the drapes opened to get as much of that warm air in and passive solar heating! I might do a bit of baking tonight, just to warm up the house!
Your soup sounds delicious. I think I, too, will make another batch of soup, tomorrow. I'm being lazy and having one of my instant cup noodles for lunch, today!
Hope you are enjoying your Sunday, Debra.

  6. That is cold inside! I'd be cold also! I hope the heater is serviced soon. I understand about worrying for your daughter taking a ride in what was the middle of the night. I always worry if I know my niece, or sister, is traveling late. I'm glad your daughter had a safe trip and hope her return goes well.

    1. Thank you, Celie. I always wonder if it is just me or do others also find some of these temperatures to be a bit on the chilly side!
Thank you for understanding about my concern for my daughter traveling alone at night. This was the only non-stop flight that was available on that day, she said and she wanted a non-stop flight because she dislikes air travel and didn't want to take off and land multiple times! :)

  7. It's a good thing your peach tree is outdoors, not in your cold house! S bakes some yummy looking pastries and I agree with your daughter that baklava can be too sweet. I'm glad she had a safe trip, it is not fun when you have to travel to the airport in the middle of the night, and then a bumpy flight, too. How nice that she was able to be with friends later.
Thank you for your healing thoughts, much appreciated. I got DH to drive me to church today and I was able to sing in the choir, as they were low in numbers. It was probably easier than being in the congregation. We had high winds in the night but were fortunate as the power stayed on. East of the town they have an outage.

    1. That poor peach tree! Even the nectarine tree had a few flowers on it, earlier! I'm hoping there will be more flowers, later on, in the spring and some fruits next summer!
Thank you, Bushlady; the early morning flight was the only non-stop flight she could take and she didn't want to endure more than one take off and landing, as she dislikes flying, especially the take off/landing parts! Which required her to take a ride service during the wee hours. But, it all went well and now, she's there, safely, attending the conference and meeting up with a few friends in the evenings.
I'm glad you were able to attend church, today, and sing in the choir. Healing thoughts and prayers are continuing on their way to both you and your husband. Glad you still have power and hope those who lost theirs will have it restored, soon.

  8. Glad that your daughter made it safely to her destination. I know anything can happen anywhere but after all your recent reports of violence, I suppose it isn't surprising that you think about these things and worry more for her. Hope she has a successful and enjoyable time in Boston. I used to have to get very early flights too, and I remember how stressful it was, needing to leave for the airport at 4am. I could never sleep a wink the night before, worrying I would miss the alarm. Of course I arrived exhausted and then had to put in a full day's work, usually followed by some evening engagement too. To top it all off I never sleep well in a strange bed so couldn't even catch up on rest the following night! Viscious circle...

    1. Thank you, Lady Ella. Yes, anything can happen anywhere, but, it's a mother's responsibility to worry about her child's safety! :D She had a safe ride to the airport, a safe flight, a safe journey to the hotel, and a good evening with friends, yesterday. She said she was tired enough to fall asleep almost as soon as she went to bed, last night. Today, she had a busy day of work shops and tomorrow will be another busy day of work shops and she will give a presentation. :)

  9. That's nice that you keep tabs on your daughter when she travels. There are some frightening stories in the news. She was wise to leave so early. The airlines have been very unpredictable lately, and many flights are overbooked or end up being canceled. Your meals sound delicious.

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. I just want to make sure that my daughter is safe. :) Yes, she wanted to be at the airport early, just in case there were problems with getting there or any last minute changes. She once came really close to missing a flight, once, a few years ago, when BART was not running as scheduled due to some maintenance problems (first, they were running late and then, midway to the Oakland airport, they had to get off the subway and take a bus to the next subway station and the freeway was closed due to an accident), which made her late to get to the airport and then, there was a long line for checking in. They were making the last boarding call when she finally got to the gate! After that, she builds in even more time to get to the airport!
Thank you; I am planning to make another pot of soup, tomorrow - it's supposed to be cool and rainy, next week; I think soup would be good, don't you?

  11. I don't blame you for shepherding your daughter through her travels. That's a mom's job. I still feel relieved every time my daughter heads home from our house back to hers and it's just a 90 minute drive on good road. She always texts when she's arrived home.

The pastries looks delicious, although personally I am all in on the gooey-ness of baklava!!
