Six Months of the Front Garden

Back in January, I took a photo of the front garden on the 20th and every month since then, I have been taking a photo of the front garden, from about the same angle, on or around the 20th of the month, usually around the 22nd or so.  I thought it would be fun to see how the front garden changed during the first six months of this year:

January

February

March

April

May

June

It is obvious that the garden was at its best in February.  The front garden gets full afternoon sun and it bakes in the summer.  Even so, if you look closely, you will see one or two things to smile about:

Pomegranates Growing

There aren't many pomegranates, this year, but, I'm looking forward to them.

Then, there is this self seeded snapdragon plant, growing and flowering in a crack in driveway where it meets the sidewalk!

Snapdragon Growing in the Driveway!

How is your garden coming along?

  1. That was interesting and you can tell that the heat is getting to the plants now. But it all looks good. You can also tell that you work on your gardens.

    1. Thank you, June; from time to time, I want to buy new plants and tuck them into the front garden for color, but, then, I remember the watering restrictions and resist the urge to add more plants! I'd rather concentrate on the fruits and vegetables in the back. :)

  2. What a great idea, I'm going to look at my picture folders to see if I can do something similar.. I agree your February pic shows the garden at its best.

  3. Lovely! Yes, February is prettiest, but so are March and April. The snapdragon is sweet.

    1. Yes, mine is definitely a spring garden! The snapdragon reminds me of the saying, "Bloom where you are planted", except it is blooming where it finds itself, because nobody really planted it there in the crack! :D

  4. Mines looking great at the moment. M was here today and worked her way through my long list of things to do. We also agreed on the next lot of planting.

I do like your idea of photographing from the same angle on the same day of the month. Would you mind if I joined in doing this with you please, although I will have to do the back garden?

    1. Your garden is looking absolutely gorgeous with all the work you and M have done! I'd love it if you post monthly photos of your garden; I wouldn't mind it at all! :)

  5. What a good idea to take a photo each month. I'm glad you have some pomegranates. I once took daily photos of some trees in spring to see how they became more and more green.
Someone saw a moose around here and now I'm wishing I had got up and looked out of the window when the shed light came on. I did once see a porcupine ambling across the driveway but a moose would be great.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady; I've seen a few blogs where they photographed a tree throughout the year. I did think about doing that with perhaps the peach tree, but, didn't follow through! Maybe something to consider doing, next year. :)
Oh, my goodness! A moose! It would have been a treat to have seen one! Maybe it will visit, again!

    1. I was very amused to see the snapdragon! My gardener M had planted some for me, last year - or was it the year before? One of his other clients had wanted pink snapdragons and one of the packs of flowers he had bought for her had two or three yellow plants which she had rejected, so he asked if I'd like to have them; I'm not fussy when it comes to free plants and I enjoyed seeing the flowers. Now, here is an offspring from those plants, growing in a totally unexpected place! I will point it out to M, today; I think he'll find it amusing. :)

  7. How lovely. February was very colourful, but I really like April too, with that pretty sky! That's also a beautiful photo of the pomegranates in the evening light.

The water restrictions must be frustrating. Yesterday and today have been relatively cool here so I have not watered other than to make sure the courgettes are damp. Tomorrow is not forecast to be too hot either, so I'll water in the morning and then perhaps not till Sunday evening. I'm trying to be responsible but obviously I will keep an eye on how things look. Watering a little less often might also do some good as I've heard it encourages the roots to go deeper... but I don't know how brave I am to test the theory too rigorously! My butts are almost empty already!

PS. Blanket is complete and Oleg loves it!

    1. Thank you, Lady Ella. Staying within water allocation limits is challenging, but, I do understand the need for them. I will continue to make the front garden more drought-tolerant, over the summer. Water less frequently, but, more deeply is what they say, over here. I water the front garden with the hose once a week, now, and in between, I water the rose bush, the jasmine vine, and the pomegranate tree with grey water I've collected in buckets. The back garden is still getting watered twice a week and the vegetable plants might get a 3rd watering when the temperatures are above 95F. I don't use grey water on the vegetable plants. Good luck with keeping your plants watered. :)

Glad to hear that the blanket is completed and Oleg loves it! :)

  9. How lovely! You were so good to take photos each month. I hope you keep it up for the rest of the year! It did look good in February especially when things here at that time of the year are covered in snow!

    1. Thank you, Sharon. I hope to take the photos every month for the rest of the year. It is definitely a spring garden, but, the succulents provide some color all year long.

  10. That's a good idea having a photographic view of your garden month by month from the same viewpoint. I agree February does look the best. How lovely to have pomegranates growing in your garden, rather envious again :)

  11. Thank you for showing the progression of your front garden as the year moves on. I enjoy seeing it.
How is the new life inside of those grasses? Is there still some green?
I love that little snapdragon. Make sure to put it on your watering list :)

    1. You are welcome, Debra. Glad you are enjoying seeing the garden over the months. The clumps of purple fountain grass look more dead than alive, but, I am hopeful that the roots are still alive and we might see some new growth in the spring. :) I shall give that snapdragon a cup of water, this evening!

  14. What a clever idea to take the same photo every month. I need to do that as our front yard changes quite a bit -- or so that is my impression, I wonder if photos would bear that out. February was fab for you, clearly.
