Together, Again!

Japanese Treats

My daughter reached home safely, a little after midnight, last night!  She brought me treats!

I had a productive day, yesterday.  I picked up the groceries, remade my daughter's bed with fresh sheets and pillowcases, cleaned the bathrooms (mopped my daughter's bathroom, only; I'll mop my bathroom next time around), mended one more garment, did dishes, chatted with M when he came to tend to the garden, picked lemons to make lemonade, picked broccoli leaves to cook (checked them carefully to see if there were any worms/caterpillars; one or two leaves had some holes in them, but, I didn't see anything crawling around; nevertheless, I washed the leaves well and soaked them in vinegar water before I cooked them), did dishes, cooked a chicken curry, dhal, broccoli leaf mallung, and rice, and did more dishes!  LOL.

Oh, and I also called the doctor's office, again, and left a message asking if they received my scan results.  This time, the nurse called me back, apologizing for not returning my earlier call.  The doctor is on vacation these two weeks, but, the nurse read out the scan results: gallstones!  The nurse said the doctor will call me for a phone consultation when she returns from her vacation.  In the meantime, I am to avoid fried/fatty food and spicy food (at that, the nurse and I both laughed; she has Indian friends and knows all about our spicy food; she then said, "Maybe less spicy food"!  LOL.)    I shall wait and see what the doctor has to say and then, take it from there.

My daughter had texted me to let me know when she was leaving the apartment.  She was taking the subway from Berkeley to San Jose (cue in Dionne Warwick's song, "Do You Know the Way to San Jose") where her friend P and his cousin D were picking her up.  She said she had to wait a bit for them as they were held up in traffic, but, she let me know when they picked her up and they were on their way.  I texted her to ask her friends if they'd like to have some dinner and she texted back that their response was a very enthusiastic, "Yes, please!"  LOL.  I had cooked plenty of curries, but, I cooked a second pot of rice, just in case!  I expected them to come inside and have dinner, here (I would have worn my mask and stayed in the other room while they ate) but, instead, they asked if they could take the food to go and I was happy to serve them their dinner into containers.  My daughter said they didn't want to take their masks off inside the house; she and P had kept their masks on during the entire 5 hour drive.  In addition to the dinners, I gave P a jar of my peach topping and a jar of peach chutney.

Ten minutes or so later, my daughter received a text from P; he and D had arrived at P's parents' house and P's mother was asking where my daughter was because she had prepared dinner and was expecting my daughter to be there, too!  LOL.

My daughter enjoyed her dinner and the last fresh peach that I had managed to keep without spoiling for her.  Then, we sampled one or two of the treats she had brought me before we went to sleep, around 2:30 a.m.

This morning, we woke up around 9:00 a.m.  Then, I drove my daughter to her friend A's apartment so she could get a ride with A to their friend V's baby shower.  I'm not sure if A will drop my daughter off at home or if I need to go and pick her up from A's (it's not that far, about a 15-20 minutes drive, depending on traffic).  Either way is fine with me.

I had breakfast after I came home (a banana and a slice of bread with seeni sambol - so much so for less spicy! LOL!)  I am planning to relax and take it easy, today.  I have one more garment to mend which I will do this afternoon.

My next door neighbors are busy getting ready for a big party, tonight!  They've put up tents all along their driveway and hung up decorations and lights.  I anticipate loud music!  Yesterday, one of the children sent a ball over the wall, straight into my dining room window!  Fortunately, it was not a hard throw.  An older boy hoisted him up to maybe jump over the wall to get his ball, but, I happened to be standing at the window (I was tidying up the table and putting away my sewing and fabric scraps, when I saw ball coming over the wall) and when he saw me, he got scared and got back down!  Later, I tossed the ball back, over the wall.  LOL.

I am grateful for:
- My daughter had a safe journey home
- Her friends giving her rides
- Being able to send food home with her friends
- Daughter bringing me treats
- Having my daughter home, again!

My joyful activity is spending time with my daughter.

New Bowls!

I asked my daughter to buy me new bowls to replace the ones I have, some of which are cracked.  She bought these from the Japanese store.  The plain white ones are a little bigger and deeper than the patterned ones.

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. Ooh I like the sakura bowls very much! Glad D is safely home and I hope you have a lovely week together (well, obviously you will!). So you went to bed at 2.30am? Why such an early night?! You might be glad of it when next door's party gets going - commiserations on that one - I know the feeling. Hmmmm - gallstones... I guess not too worrying and hope you can agree on an effective treatment.

    1. I thought you might like the sakura bowls, Lady Ella. :) Thank you, I hope we will have a good week together. :) Yes, an early night for a change! :D The party is in full swing - live mariachi music amplified so much that my whole house is vibrating and the other neighbors are calling me to express their sympathies! :D Once the doctor is back from her vacation and calls me, we will discuss what is the best treatment.

  2. How lovely to have your daughter back for a while! I'm sure you had a lot to catch up on while enjoying the treats. The bowls are a nice shape.
I'm so sorry to hear that your have gallstones. It doesn't seem right that you have to watch out for spicy food when you have grown up with it! Decades ago when I was pregnant with DS, I knew another mom-to-be from India and it intrigued me that her normal diet was spicy, while I was being warned off spicy food.
The wind blew steadily all last night and this morning we awoke to blue skies but gusty winds all day. Needless to say I was happy to hang my sheets on the line, double pegged so they wouldn't fly away!

    1. It's nice to have her home, again. :)
I'm going to wait and see what the doctor has to say, of course, but, maybe changes to the diet and weight loss, etc., might be sufficient.
I hope the winds weren't too gusty as to cause any damage, but, it does sound like good weather for drying laundry quickly. :) Hope you are feeling less tired now, Bushlady and the weather will be nice for your Sunday afternoon walk.

  3. Nice bowls. It sounds like your daughter's friends are being very careful not to catch Covid. The death numbers are still high, in my opinion. Hope your gall stones aren't painful. Do you have to have them removed?

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. Yes, my daughter and her friends are being careful. The numbers continue to be quite high, don't they? I'm going to wait and see what the doctor has to say about the gall stones. Maybe they'll shrink and I don't have to have surgery. :)

  4. I know you are happy to have daughter back at your home.
Fingers crossed the gall stones are an easy fix!
BTW what is black chocolate? Curious chocolate lovers want to know what they might be missing.

Thank you; I'll wait and see what the doctor has to say about the gall stones.
Black chocolate is dark chocolate; I couldn't find the % of cacao, but, they also make a bar that is 95% cacao, which is labeled as such.

  5. Oh no you have gallstones. I've had my gall bladder removed and got rid of those pesky stones that cause so much discomfort and pain. How lovely that your daughter has returned home and with Japanese treats too, enjoy your time together. I have the same problem with neighbour's balls coming over the fence and hitting our window, when I spoke to the father he called me old and miserable :-)

    1. Yes, apparently, that's what the scan found out! I'm waiting until the doctor calls me to find out what my options are, but, I read that surgery is the most effective treatment. It's lovely to have my daughter home for a week. That was not a very nice thing for your neighbor to say! How rude!

  7. How wonderful that your daughter is home for a visit. But I'm sorry you have gallstones. Thankfully not too serious. I had them long ago, 25 years now about, and had surgery which wasn't too hard a recovery. I hope whatever treatment you and the doctor decide on works out for you. I've been working in my garden this morning before it gets too hot. Id planted basil, oregano and thyme. These always grow well for me. I'll dry some to keep for winter. I hope you and your daughter have a very good visit together.

    1. Thank you, Celie; yes, it's lovely to have my daughter home for a week. She took vacation time off, so she doesn't have to work from home, which gives us more time to just hang out together and relax. :) Waiting to hear from the doctor to find out what will be the best treatment for the gallstones. I read that surgery is the more permanent solution, but, we'll discuss the options and see.

  8. I'm sure you have mixed feelings about the gall stones. They not fun, but then news could have been worse. It will be interesting to hear what the doctor has to say about treating them because they are making so many medical advances these days.

So happy that your daughter is back for a visit. The added bonus is that she brought treats. Who doesn't like new dishes and cookies and candy?

    1. I am very relieved that it is gallstones and not something else which could have been worse. They don't really bother me (although there was that unexplained pain, which might have been one being passed through?), but, we'll see what the doctor has to say.
I'm happy to have my daughter home, again, and I appreciate the treats. :)

    1. She's here for just one week, this time, Nil, but, that's OK. The Japanese treats are nice. Thank you, I'll wait and see what the doctor has to say and take it from there. How long will you be in Sri Lanka this summer? I'd be interested to hear about your experiences, when you have time to write.

  10. The bowls on the right are so pretty; and how clever of her to get two sizes. I bet you are flying high with her home again. Enjoy!

    1. Thank you, Susanne; I haven't heard from my doctor yet, but, according to what I've read the options range from doing nothing if they don't bother you to surgery to remove the gall bladder. I'll wait and see what the doctor has to say before I make any decisions.

  12. How lovely that your daughter is back with you for a week. I know you'll make the best of the days and enjoy spending time together.

My sister had to have her gall bladder removed but my friend, who had a lot more stones but no painful symptoms, had never needed any treatment. I suppose it depends on how it is affecting you. The advice about the spicy food made me laugh ... are you doing as you were told?

The gall stones don't seem to be bothering me too much, although there was a bit of pain at one time (maybe I was passing a stone?) I will wait and see what the doctor has to say. As for the spicy food...um...LOL!

  13. I am glad your daughter arrived home safely. That is funny that both mothers were preparing food for their children and their children's friends :)
I have gallstones too. I had some discomfort years ago and got the scan and they were found. For me the discomfort came about when I also was having a thyroid situation making itself known. (overactive) Once the thyroid was treated with radio active iodine (so now I have a really slow thyroid that I am on daily medicine for) I never had any more gall stone discomfort.
For me it was greasy food or heavy type foods that brought on discomfort. I never had a problem with spicy food.
I found apple cider (not apple juice) to be amazing in it's ability to help the discomfort.
Anyway, that is my personal experience and of course everyone is different.

Oh no - a party. Sounds like it will be a big bash. I hope it wasn't too bad.
I like your new bowls :)

    1. Thank you, Debra; yes, it's funny how both P's mother and I prepared food for the "kids" (who are all adults, but, of course, to us, they are still kids).
Oh, no, you treat the thyroid for one problem and now you have the opposite problem! Thank you for letting me know about the apple cider. I'll keep that in mind. I thought I had an UTI and took cranberry juice...
Yes, the party went on for hours and it was LOUD!

  14. I'm sorry to read you have gallstones, Bless. Although, at least you now know what you are dealing with and it can be treated.
I didn't realise your daughter was due back for a visit so soon. I hope you have a lovely time together. Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules; yes, the gallstones can be treated and right now, they are not bothering me too much.
My daughter wasn't planning to visit so soon, but, the opportunity arose for her to get a ride down with a friend and it coincided nicely with another friend's baby shower, so, she decided to take a week off from work and take a vacation. :)

  15. Gallstones! I remember my late father having a low fat, low spice, low taste diet and it was awful. That was forty years ago, though, so I hope modern medicine has come on and your doctor can sort something out soon!
