Bunny Fort!

Fort Watermelon

Or, should that be Fort Watermelon?

I mentioned, yesterday, that I saw Bun Bun feasting on the watermelon leaves and I had to rig up a barrier of sorts, using what I had on hand - several metal folding chairs and flattened cardboard boxes, mainly!  Plus a metal cover and an old dry erase memo board!  With flower pots standing guard/propping up the chairs and cardboard!

Inside the Fort!

Tucked safely inside the fort are Wawa Melon and Walter III aka Dandy Macaroni!  You can catch a glimpse of him on the left in the picture, just above the upturned pot!  Wawa is just out of the picture on the lower right..

Fort Knox it ain't (I've had to reinforce one of the cardboard panels as the wind had blown it down!), but, I have tried to close up all the gaps and I am hoping that it will keep Bun Bun away!  At least until I can order some wire mesh and ask M to build me an enclosure!

In the meantime, the hibiscus must have been very curious to see what was going on with the melons, because both its flowers were on the side overlooking the fort and appeared to be peering:

Hibiscus Flowers

Maybe they are communicating with the cosmos inside the fort!

"Hey, Cosmos, what is going on?"

"Oh, Hibiscus, it's the most exciting thing!  We have us a fort to keep us safe from Bun Bun!"

Elsewhere in the garden, the roses are happy and not too concerned:

Pink Rose says, "I have thorns to protect me!"

While the poor Buddleia says, "I've enough other things to worry about; my leaves are drying up!"

Ailing Buddleia

So, what's going on in your garden, these days?

  1. I hope your bunnies don't remember that they can dig under barriers! The Buddleia looks sad, I do hope it recovers.

I counted 14 tomatoes on my three plants and two are starting to ripen. I'm hoping that since we have had less rain for a few days, they won't have blossom end rot. DH and I have been watching videos on pruning raspberries and blackberries and in fall we hope to make improvements to our wild ones!

    1. Oh, no! I almost forgot that bunnies can burrow! :D Well, the barrier seems to have worked this evening, when Bun Bun was in the garden earlier this evening - I saw him happily munching on some grass near the fort! Then, he moved onto a patch of juicy purslane...and I went back to my cooking (I made some tomato soup/pasta sauce).

  2. Fort Watermelon isn't at all what I was expecting to see! Let's hope it does its job until M can build a more permanent solution for you. 😂😂

The buddleia looks very poorly. Is it just the leaves affected? Have you tried a scratch test to see if the stems are still alive?

M sorted my garden out today so I've written a garden update post for tomorrow.

    1. One of my friends said Fort Watermelon looked like an encampment for homeless rabbits and I told her that it was meant to keep the rabbits out! LOL. I tried to put sticks in the ground to hold up the cardboard, but, the ground was hard and I didn't want to be digging holes. Also, there weren't quite enough cardboard to go all around, so the chairs were pressed into service!

I haven't tried a scratch test on the buddleia stems, but, I've a feeling that the smaller stems are dried up, too. It is supposed to be an invasive plant in many of our states, here, but, as you can see, it's definitely not invasive in my garden! :D

Looking forward to reading your garden update! :)

    1. Thank you! It kept Bun Bun out, yesterday evening! He ate some grass and other items, but, left the watermelons alone! :D

  4. I know you're a much nicer person than I am, but I would be furious if any neighbour left their rabbit to roam wild, and cause bother for others! Anyway, your fort is pretty amusing, and it sounds as if you had fun in the construction process. Hope it does the trick!

Buddleia gets everywhere around here; I'm always pulling it up. (Want me to put some in an envelope for you?!) 😆

    V pretty hibiscus!

    1. I am wondering if Bun Bun belonged to the renters two doors down who have now left. If so, poor Bun Bun. But, the fort seems to be working! My gardener M was very amused, but, we will be looking to buy more wire mesh!

I suspect the buddleia didn't get enough water when I was recovering from the sciatica. Maybe the roots are still alive and we might get some new growth, next year. Thank you for the offer, though! Maybe you can bring a few seedlings when you come to dinner...

We used to call hibiscus "shoe flowers" back in Sri Lanka. I guess the flowers could be used to polish shoes!

  6. Bun Bun can't be trusted to not eat the watermelon plants. Ha Ha! But he does have to fend for himself since his rude family left him behind. Poor Bun Bun. Those hibiscus are beautiful. Denise

    1. Yes, I feel sorry for Bun Bun, but, I can't let him eat my fruits and vegetables! He ate some of the cat food I put out, today, so he's not going hungry, either! :D

So funny. I got a good laugh at this post. But, hey! Whatever works, right?

We are getting a hurricane today so we have spent the last few days getting things done to batten down the hatches as they say.
I just brought my potted tomato plant into the garage - the last thing I was waiting to do. I wanted it to spend as little time inside as possible but the wind is driving and the rain is whipping so it was time.

    1. The fort is holding up and it seems to be working at keeping Bun Bun away!

I heard about the hurricane and thought of you! I'm glad you got those trees taken down, earlier in the year! I hope you get through the hurricane without any damage and the power doesn't go out. Stay safe, Debra!
