Saturday's Blessings

Another rather relaxed day for me.

Daughter's friend A had been invited to have lunch with us, today, and then, they were going to watch some anime videos together.  In the morning, daughter did a little tidying up.  I helped by taking the trash and the recycling to the big bins outside.  Then, I picked a couple of lemons and a sprig or two of curry leaves from the garden.  I used some of the lemon to season the zucchini salad I made to go with our lunch - sliced zucchini (I used two small ones), marinated in lemon juice, a little salt, and freshly ground pepper.  Daughter put a pot of rice to cook; there was beef curry, green beans, leftover sausages from last night's dinner, the zucchini salad, and zucchini chutney to go with the rice for lunch.  Zucchini brownies with ice cream for dessert!  LOL.  Both daughter and I delighted in telling A that all the vegetables came from the garden!

A brought us a box full of food stuff that she had been given by a family member, saying she had more at home and didn't have storage space in her studio apartment for it all!  Apparently her family member  volunteers at a community food distribution center and the volunteers are given any food that remains at the end of the day.

Some of What A Brought Us

There were two jars of peanut butter, a bag of instant mashed potato flakes, two 2lb. packages of rice, three 2lb. bags of pinto beans, a 2lb. bag of navy beans, two 2lb. bags of brown split peas and two of green split peas.  Also included (but not pictured as daughter had already started to put things away), a 2 lb. bag of unsalted dry roasted almonds, a 2 lb. bag of raw natural almonds, and a bag of raisins!   Such a blessing!  Daughter will take some of it back with her and I have already asked friend R if she'd like some of it.

A was persuaded to take 6 zucchini with her in return!  LOL!  Daughter also gave her some curry leaves to take with her as she wants to try making a curry.

In the evening, daughter and I put in another order for groceries.  We needed more bread, half and half, fresh fruits, another bag of flour, and a few other items.  I will pick up the order tomorrow afternoon.

Later, I swept my bathroom and cleaned the litter box.  Cleaning the litter box has never been my favorite thing to do, yet, I am glad that I am now capable of doing this task, too.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A blessing us with her generosity
- Daughter being able to have her friend over for a visit
- Being able to order groceries online
- Fans and the electricity to run them
- Feeling well enough to resume doing a few more household tasks

Today's joyful activities included reading and relaxing.

Plans for tomorrow include picking up the groceries.

How was your Saturday?  What are your plans for Sunday?

  1. What a generous gift from A. I'll be interested in any spicy recipes you have for all the beans, please. 😀

I'm defrosting my freezer today. Last night the top drawer wouldn't slide in far enough so the door wouldn't close. I emptied the contents of the top drawer into the garage freezer and took the drawer out to allow the door to close so today have emptied the other drawers into the other freezer and am waiting on it to finish defrosting so I can put everything away. It wouldn't all fit in the other freezer so I also have to cook up some things for today's meals and have more defrosting in the fridge for tomorrow's meals! I'm not sure what caused it to ice up like that in the first place so I hope it's not the start of an expensive problem!

    1. Yes, it was a very generous gift from A, wasn't it? I told my daughter that, when I cook some of what A gave us, we will share the cooked food with her. I don't really have any recipes for the dried beans; what I plan to do is boil some of them and saute them with onions, curry leaves, mustard seeds, etc., as I do with garbanzo beans, for breakfast and/or snacks. Or, boil them and make a curry. :)

Oh, I hope your freezer will be fine once you've defrosted it. Maybe a vent was blocked or something. Is it one that requires regular defrosting? Thank goodness you had the garage freezer for at least some of the items!

    1. Thank you, Martha. It was great to have A spend the afternoon with my daughter; they've been best friends since they were in 7th grade. Hope you, too, are having a nice Sunday. :)

  3. You know, in the summer you could temporarily rename your blog, "The Zucchini Chronicles"! It really is a veggie that gives and gives, isn't it?
So nice to get that box of food items, knowing that you can always share some.

We have sun again and plan to have a walk this afternoon.
I made banana pancakes for breakfast and we rather pigged out on them, and there is only one little one left!

    1. You are right, we do all share food, don't we? According to my daughter, it is how we demonstrate affection. :)

  6. Your daughter must be right about sharing food; it is a wonderful way to demonstrate affection! I'm glad you are able to do more now, even if the tasks are not enjoyable in themselves (as in cleaning the litter box)! Best, Celie

    1. Food is my language of love, I guess. :) Thank you, Celie; it feels wonderful to be able to do more things. Being able to clean the litter box is important when you have a cat! :D

  7. What a generous gift from A. You are so lucky to have a very nice group of relatives, friends and neighbors. 😊

I spent my Saturday grading and napping. Not very productive. 😀

  8. It was a very generous gift, wasn't it? My daughter told A she didn't have to bring something every time she visits (last time she brought cake), but, A had said she didn't have room for all the food her relative gave her!

I'd consider grading to be very productive! You probably needed that nap after all the grading! Hope today was a relaxed day and you have a great week, next week.

  9. I bet it felt good to tell A all the vegetables came from your garden. They will have tasted better than shop bought as well. X

    1. It did feel good! My daughter was laughing because she had just told A that the veggies came from the garden when I came into the kitchen and said the same thing! LOL! I guess we were both proud of our garden produce! :D

  10. How nice of your daughter's friend A to share all of this food with you. And the things she brought you will last a while and that's always good.
And the nuts and raisins! They can be so expensive - how fortunate to also receive those.

And 6 more zucchini out of the house.
    What a good day :)

    1. It was very generous of A to share her bounty with us! Yes, the almonds and raisins are expensive to buy in the stores!

Ha, ha, any day we get a few zucchini out of the house is a good day, isn't it? :D
