Friday: The End of the Summer of Zucchini

The One that Almost Got Away

'Today, M picked the last two zucchini and pulled out all but one zucchini plant!  It is the end of the summer of zucchini!  Next year, we will plant two or three zucchini plants at the most!  LOL.

We pulled out most of the green bean plants, too, as they were not doing all that well. I think, next time, I will plant pole beans and not bush beans.   In the meantime, the tomatoes are doing well and I might pick more tomatoes this weekend.

Today, I am grateful for:
- All the zucchini we've harvested this summer
- Being able to share some of the zucchini with friends, neighbors, and family
- The jars of zucchini chutney we were able to make
- The opportunity to try so many zucchini dishes
- M helping with the garden

Today's joyful activity was selecting six more zucchini to give to my daughter's friend!  LOL.

How is your garden growing?   Did you plant any zucchini this year?

  1. I can't match your zucchini achievements. None of my veg have done too well. They are all growing but not really thriving and have not produced as much as expected. The tomatoes have done the best; the two bush cherry tomatoes have now finished and the pole ones have just started to produce fruit so I have plenty of tomatoes in the freezer. The chilli plant did much better than expected but every single chilli has insect bore holes so can't be eaten. I've decided I'm better at flowers so will stick to that next year!

    1. I'm sorry to hear that your vegetables haven't done too well, this year, other than the tomatoes. Too bad about the chillies! My chilli plant was eaten down to a nub by the neighbor's rabbits, but, it has since grown back and have plenty of flowers and one or two chillies are starting to form! I think I will plant more chilli plants, later.

  2. After an initial good run with our zucchini, something is eating it now. We'll see how it goes with future harvest.

    1. Sorry to hear that something is eating your zucchini! The deer, perhaps? Don't know if rabbits like zucchini - the neighbor's rabbits didn't seem to like my zucchini (they ate various other plants, though!)

  3. I don't know how the rattlesnake variety of beans grow there, but they are killing it here!

    1. Oh, thank you, Anne; I read that they are supposed to grow well in drought conditions, so, I shall order a packet of seeds and try them. :) I love green beans (a lot more than zucchini!)

  5. There must be a sense of relief with the end of the zucchini plants! I feel that way when I finally pull out the last of the milkweed. It is lovely in flower but gets grungy and ugly later and I only keep it in case there are still any Monarch caterpillars hiding in it. I'm thinking of checking and pulling out any really messy plants any day now.

    1. Those plants really did their best and produced lots of zucchini for us, this year, but, yes, there was a sense of relief to finally pull them out! But, both M and I thanked each plant as we added them to the pile to go to the yard waste bin! (Didn't want to compost them because of the powdery mildew on their leaves).

I'm glad you wait until you make sure all the Monarch caterpillars are gone before you pull out the milkweed plants. :)

  6. That's fantastic. I wasn't successful with zucchini this year at the cottage, but I do have four plants growing up at the cabin. I don't know if there is enough time for them to produce fruit, but the female flowers should be next. I am hopeful. The plants look green and lush. Very healthy...

    1. Thank you, Stephenie; I hope your plants at the cabin will be able to produce lots of zucchini for you. It sounds like they are coming along nicely! :)

  7. It's been a good summer for courgettes. I'm hoping to use up the last of mine later today, and I didn't even need to plant any! :)

    1. Ha, ha, you did well with the courgettes you were given! :) I have one more baby one on the plant that didn't get pulled out, so, still have at least one more zucchini to look forward to! :D

  8. It certainly has been the summer of the zucchini.
I was so tired of zucchini just from viewing it on your blog, that when my friend offered me one from her garden, I declined as if I had had my own summer of zucchini.
    LOL
I think I have PTSD from watching you deal with all of yours.
    hahaha

    1. Oh, no, Debra! I'm so sorry my zucchini tales had you declining an offer of zucchini from your friend! Oops! Be careful that I don't send you a package of zucchini in the mail! LOL! (Don't worry, I'm still not going to the post office in person to mail anything to anyone! :D )

    2. Oh gosh - I can just see it now. All of your faithful blog readers opening packages of zucchini
      Haha
I'm having quite a laugh at that.
