Fresh Fruit Tart

Today, I realized that the appointment with the primary care physician, which I thought was scheduled for next week, was actually scheduled for August!  Oops!  So, I rescheduled next Monday's blood test to the week before my appointment in August!  I am glad that I realized my mistake when I did!  Otherwise, my blood test results would have been out dated by the time I had the appointment!  Then, I spent a few minutes cleaning out my purse.  I was pleased to see that I didn't have a lot of junk in it!  I only had a couple of old appointment cards to tear up and toss!

In the afternoon, daughter and I set off to my appointment with the oncologist.  Daughter went with me just in case I experienced any leg pains, driving to downtown and back (it was only about 25 miles, each way, but, due to traffic, the drive took just over one hour, each way!)  She would have driven us back, if I experienced any pain, but, I was able to drive both ways without any problems.  I was pretty confident I would have been able to drive myself both ways, but, my daughter wanted to reassure herself that I could do it!

The appointment didn't go as well as it should have because I couldn't receive the injection I was supposed to get!  It is something I receive once every 6 months to keep my bones strong (I have osteopenia or low bone density).  However, because I still had 10 more days to go before it would be 6 months since the last injection, my insurance wouldn't authorize today's injection!  I have to wait exactly 6 months to the date!  I suppose the clinic should have checked the dates when they made the appointment, but, I guess they forgot.  I didn't think about it, either, until this morning, when I called the clinic to confirm the appointment (I realized that I hadn't received the usual letter of authorization from the insurance company, but, sometimes, their authorization letters come after the appointment!).  But, when I called in, the clinic just confirmed the appointment without saying anything about the injection.  It was only after the nurse practitioner had seen me and I had reminded her that I was due for my injection that they checked to see if they had received the authorization.  I guess they tried to talk with the insurance people, but, they wouldn't budge.  So, I now have to go back on the 27th of July for the injection!  It's a bit inconvenient, but, at least I'll receive the injection, then, and I guess the car could do with a bit of a run, too.

Other than that, the appointment went well!  My blood test results were mostly good/within acceptable ranges.  My iron level had decreased and I was told to go back on the iron supplements I had been taking at one time (I was taken off them when the iron level went up too much!)

My appointment had been at 2:00 p.m. and by the time I finished, it was 3:30 p.m., already!  Since neither daughter nor I had eaten anything (I had a cup of tea in the morning and she had a cup of coffee), I suggested picking up some food on the way home (even though we had plenty of leftovers at home).  We treated ourselves to some Mexican food (grilled chicken with rice, beans, tortillas, and salsa) from a drive through fast food restaurant near our house for a very late lunch (it was 4:30 p.m., by then) and a fresh fruit tart from the Armenian bakery, for dessert!  I justified the expense by saying that we were supporting our neighborhood businesses and celebrating my good blood test results and the start of daughter's week long staycation (she has taken all of next week off from work).

We got home just as M was pulling up to do the garden.  He got to enjoy a piece of the fruit tart, too.  He picked 5 more zucchini today, the one bell pepper we had growing, and several tomatoes.

In the evening, I watched news while daughter played a video game with some of her friends.   Later, R called to see how my doctor's appointment went and we chatted for a bit.

Afterwards, I cleaned the litter box.

Today, I am grateful for:
- My blood test results were good for the most part
- A safe drive to the clinic and back
- Daughter accompanying me
- The availability of medications and treatments, even if I have to wait for authorization to receive them!
- M tending to the garden

Today's joyful activity was treating ourselves to more yummy food!

I am looking forward to a fairly quiet weekend after all of this week's activity!

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. That's good news about your test results though frustrating that you have to return for your injection because of the issues with authorisation. You'd think the insurance company could be a little more flexible wouldn't you?

The fruit tart looks so good, especially after your Mexican food. That's what I call a good food day!

I'm just having a quiet Saturday. I'm sitting in the garden revising my meal plan as I have decided to try the Slimming World method again, just doing it on my own not joining a group. There's a load of washing in the machine and when I've finished the meal planning I will potter around the garden doing a any deadheading that's needed - I doubt there's much as M was here yesterday. After that I plan to sit in the sunshine and read.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; yes, a bit frustrating that I have to return for the injection, but, rules are rules, I suppose. I just wish that either I or the clinic had realized it earlier and rescheduled the appointment. Oh, well, lesson learned! I'll be sure to remind them to schedule my next appointment 6 months + 1 day after the July 27 appointment!

The tart is delicious! It isn't overly sweet - it has a crumbly base that has a biscuit like texture (as opposed to a sponge cake) which isn't all that sweet, a layer of custard-like filling, and then, the fresh fruits on top.

Sounds like you are having a relaxed day. Hope the hay fever is better and you are enjoying yourself. I've had a relaxed morning, myself (I slept in!) and don't have anything planned for the rest of the day!

  2. Insurance won't budge on the dates. I've experienced that, also, so I've learned to pay attention when I make an appointments.

    The fruit tart looks delicious.

    1. I've learned my lesson, too, June, and will make it a point to make sure that the next appointment for the injection will be made exactly 6 months + 1 day from the date this injection will be given!

The fruit tart is delicious. Not overly sweet, either, which is why my daughter likes it and I can fool myself into thinking it is not too too bad for me! :D

  3. What an inconvenience to have to go back for your injection. But what can you do - not much when it comes to insurance rules.
I'm glad you had a good visit and your blood test results were good.

That fruit tart looks beautiful. I'm hoping it tasted as good as it looks.

    1. Yes, a bit of an inconvenience, but, partly my fault for not making sure the 6 months were up, exactly to the date, when the appointment was made. I'm just grateful that the insurance covers it; it is an expensive injection!

Thank you, Debra; I was very happy and relieved that the blood rest results were good, especially when it came to the cancer markers, etc. :)

The fruit tart was delicious. Not overly sweet (it has a crumb base that is a bit like graham crackers, but, not as sweet) and with the fresh fruit, I can pretend it is not too bad for me! :D

  4. Glad everything went well other than the inconvenience of having to go back again for the injection. Be sure to put a note on your calendar 6 months from now so you remember schedule the appointment after it's authorized. Have a great weekend Bless. :)

    1. Thank you, Martha; yes, I will make sure the next appointment will be 6 months + 1 day from when I receive the injection at the end of this month! Hope you, too, have a lovely weekend! :)

  5. Too bad about the injection. I once had a similar experience trying to renew a prescription too early.
I love your justifications for the Mexican food and the fruit tart, and you could add to the fruit tart, sharing a treat with your gardener.

Being alongside the bush, our yard features visiting critters both welcome and dubious. The shed light went on the other night and I spotted a beautiful fluffy skunk sneaking along by our woodshed. Then yesterday morning I discovered we had had a larger visitor, that had managed to reach up to one of the hummingbird feeders and send it crashing off the end of the porch down into the vegetation. There is a tiny piece missing, plus the yellow centre of one of the flowers, so it will need some repair work, if possible. I may have another yellow piece, or I could search more thoroughly in the place where it dropped. Unfortunately most manufacturers of Hummingbird feeders seem to abandon their designs regularly and certainly do not offer spare parts for sale!

    1. Yes, insurance is very particular about their rules. But, I am just grateful that I have medical insurance and they will cover this rather expensive medication. If I have to wait for exactly 6 months, then, I will.

Glad you like my justification for getting food to go and the tart! :D We had the leftovers from the previous day for our dinner and leftovers from yesterday's lunch for today's brunch.

Good thing the skunk was simply passing through and didn't feel the need to spray its scent anywhere! The larger visitor sounds a bit more destructive, but, I suppose it didn't understand why the hummingbirds should get all that tasty sugar syrup! Hope you are able to repair the feeder. :)

  6. Hi Bless, That's too bad about the insurance company's mistake. It sounds like you made the best of the situation. It's nice that you daughter went with you. Hope you enjoyed the Mexican food and yummy fruit tart! I have been gardening and cleaning this weekend.

    1. It wasn't the insurance company's mistake, Stephenie; their rule is that the injection can only be given every 6 months, not a day sooner. It was the clinic's and my mistake that we didn't verify that I was scheduled to take the injection exactly 6 months after the previous one. There were still 10 more days left before the 6 months will be up. I will now make double sure that future injections will be scheduled exactly 6 months apart!

Sounds like you're having a busy weekend! Gardening and cleaning never ends, does it? :)

  7. I’m glad to hear your blood test results were good. I hope iron levels will be better soon, with the supplement.

The fruit tart looks really delicious. I too sometimes justify eating out using the same excuse. LOL.

I hope you have a relaxing weekend, Bless.

    1. Thank you, Nil. Yes, the iron supplements will help with the iron levels. Funny how we can justify certain things, isn't it? :D But, the fruit tart is wonderful! Hope you, too, are having a relaxing weekend, Nil.

  8. Oh that tart looks wonderful! I am so sorry that the insurance company was being such a pain and that you have to go back again for the injection. I spent 3 hours the other day trying to deal with my new insurance company and finding a ophthalmologist that would take my new insurance.

    1. The fruit tart is delicious! I guess the insurance company was just standing firm when it comes to its rules and regulations. I'm just grateful I have health insurance and they cover this particular medication! I really should have checked the dates but, you know what they say about hindsight being 20/20! Hope you found a good ophthalmologist, Debbie.

  9. I'm glad your appointment was successful, besides being unable to receive your injection. It's a bit of an inconvenience having to return but I can understand why they need to do this.
Is that a fresh fruit tart or fresh fruit art? It looks amazing. X
