Rainy Thursday

We have rain!  It started raining late last night, it rained for part of the morning, then it cleared in the afternoon, and it has rained on and off all evening from about 4:15 p.m.!   I am glad that it is raining because we really need the rain.  However, the rain is bringing more devastation to the areas that had the fires, earlier, because it is causing mud slides and debris slides.

Day 2 of my new schedule didn't start out too well.  Mornings are a work in progress!  I got to bed a little earlier, last night (well, early this morning, actually), but I couldn't fall asleep.  Usually, I listen to the sound of the rain and fall asleep right away, but, not last night.  I tried meditating, but it still took me until after 3:00 a.m. to fall asleep.  Sometime later in the morning, the electricity must have gone off, because, when I woke up, the time on the clock radio on my bedside was blinking on and off.  As a result, the alarm didn't go off (the power outage resets the alarm back to 12:00) and I slept until 11:30 a.m.!  So much so for getting up at 9:30 a.m. and going walking by 10:30 a.m.!  In any case, it was raining, on and off, this morning, so I wouldn't have gone walking, even if I woke up early.

The rain ceased in the early afternoon, however, so I went for my walk at 1:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. I enjoyed seeing all the clouds:

More rain clouds?
After I came back from my walk, I called the doctor's office and rescheduled Monday's appointment.  I need to do a blood test prior to the appointment, and I need my updated insurance card to do the blood test.  So, I postponed the doctor's appointment for two weeks - hopefully, by then, I'd have received my new card and would be able to get the blood test done.

Then, I dusted the living room, dining room, and family room and vacuumed all three rooms.  Once that was done, I sorted through one bag of papers, although, I cheated a bit and selected the smallest bag of papers!  LOL!

When I was vacuuming, I knocked over a traditional water storage vessel, called a guruleththuwa, and it broke:

Earthenware Water Storage Vessel
Water stored in these vessels keep cool through evaporation, but I used it as a decorative item.  I am debating whether to glue the pieces in place or dispose of it.  What do you think?

I had just finished vacuuming and sorting through my papers when it started to rain again!  It has since rained on and off all evening.  I am glad because my garden is getting a good soaking.  It needs it, rather badly.

I had a curry puff and a cup of tea after I finished my housework for the day and watched some news.   Neighbor T called because she was a bit nervous about the rain and I spoke with her for a bit.  Later, I called friend R to check on her.  We are going to try to go out to lunch on Sunday.

Dinner was a bowl of chicken and vegetable soup (had two bowls, actually) and a piece of cornbread for dessert.

Today, I am grateful for:
- The much needed rain
- Being able to walk in the afternoon during a break in the rain
- What I was able to accomplish today
- Dancer cuddling next to me on the sofa
- My warm cardigan that I knitted several years ago

  1. I'd try to repair the break. All the pieces look like they'd join back together easily enough and the repair may be almost invisible.

Yay for having some rain. As well as being needed for the gardens and reservoirs it makes everything so fresh afterwards.

    1. Yes, I think I will repair the break. The pieces are all there. I need to buy some superglue as the glue, as the tube I have now is all dried out.

The rain has been a blessing for some of us, even though it has caused further damage in the form of debris flows and mud slides in the hilly areas that burned, earlier. The air feels fresh, too. :)

  2. Bless, if the guruleththuwa is only for decoration and if it's only a couple of pieces, I'd glue it back. Or cut it off at the bottom of the neck and use it as a vase or a planter. :)

    1. Nil, I am going to glue it back, although that doesn't help my decluttering efforts! :D

  3. I'm barely awake so I won't be wordy as I usually am. I think the understanding of this link will be of great help and I think it's what your daughter was getting at. https://endpoints.elysiumhealth.com/the-complete-guide-to-the-science-of-circadian-rhythms-7b78581cbffa

  4. The best thing about retirement is being able to reset your schedule.
    Have a great day!

    1. You maybe right, Anne! I've been going to bed a little earlier, but can't seem to fall asleep until well after 3:00 a.m.! Then, obviously, the tendency is to sleep in, the next morning and the cycle continues!

  5. Hi Bless,
I think I would glue it back together. I think I read somewhere that in Japan, they put gold into the repair of the cracks to pay honor to the vessel and remind people that we all have flaws, which can become beautiful. Regardless, I believe the symbolism of scars/cracks are helpful to remind us that we are all flawed and yet, we remain usable and many times, just as beautiful.

I wonder if you simply stayed up all night, one time, if you could reset your inner clock and fall asleep the second night at an earlier time. I wouldn’t plan much for the day — no appointments or driving (or, naps!). Just a thought.

    1. Chris, thank you for sharing that about the custom in Japan to repair broken items. Yes, of course, we all have scars and flaws! I do have many items in my home that have been glued back together or repaired in some way. Probably too many! I was just wondering if I should continue to repair decorative items or make that an excuse to declutter them, that's all.

You know, I've wondered about that staying up all night thing, myself, as a way to reset my inner clock! I just might do that, one of these days! The other option might be to avoid all artificial light, one evening! I remember, one time, when the power went out, there wasn't that much I could do by candlelight, and so, I went to bed, early. I can't remember if I fell asleep right away, or not, though.

  6. Hopefully, you will be able to persevere through this "changing your biological clock". Keep your morning schedule as best you can and hopefully you will be able to fall asleep sooner in the evenings.

I am in agreement with everyone else here on the blog. Definitely you should superglue those pieces back together and keep this item as a decorative piece.

    1. I'm trying, Susan! I did manage to wake up at 9:30 a.m., when the alarm went off, this morning! But, the house was cold (I turned off the heater before I went to bed, last night) and it was warm under the covers, so it took me awhile to actually get out of bed!

Yes, I'm planning to buy some superglue and repair the water vessel. :)

  7. Your water vessel is a lovely shape so it is certainly worth gluing back together. Probably the break won't even show!

I'm happy that you had some much needed rain but I do hope it won't cause problems in the hilly areas.

I had breakfast with a friend and we went to church, then I did some grocery shopping, also picked up a couple of gift items and some Christmas tags. We saw a pine marten on our front porch and it later disappeared into the woodshed. I hope he doesn't get the squirrels!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady; I plan to buy some superglue and repair it! There are a few other items, too, that are waiting until I buy some superglue!

The hillsides that had fires earlier in the year did have some mud and debris slides. Some people were asked to evacuate, just in case.

Sounds like you had a busy morning! I need to go gift shopping next week! And find an "ugly Christmas sweater" before next Saturday (not tomorrow, Dec. 7). I had an ugly Christmas sweater and I donated it, during one of my decluttering sessions! Now I wish I had kept it!

Oh, I didn't know that pine marten ate squirrels! Run and hide, little squirrels!
