Apple Dump Cake

Today, I made an apple dump cake to take to the monthly prayer gathering my cousin V was hosting.   It is called a "dump" cake because, you dump the main ingredients into the baking pan!

Pie Filling and Cake Mix
I remembered to take a photo of the ingredients only after I opened the cans!

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350F

Step 2: Dump two cans of apple pie filling into a 9" x 13" baking pan.  I didn't grease the baking pan.  I did add a little ground nutmeg and cinnamon (didn't measure; maybe 1/2 teaspoon of each?) to the apple pie filling for a little flavor and I smoothed the filling a bit with a spatula to make it a more or less even layer:

Step 3: Dump the contents of the box of cake mix over the apple pie filling and spread it to make a more or less even layer:

I used a yellow cake mix, but a spice cake mix might be good, too.

Step 4:  Add butter.  The recipe I found online said to use 1 stick of margarine and 1/2 stick of butter.  I used all butter.  For my international readers, 1 stick of butter (or margarine) is the equivalent of 1/4 lb.  Some recipes say to melt the butter and drizzle on the top; the one I followed said to cut pieces and arrange on the top, which is what I did:

Step 5: Bake at 350F for 30-45 minutes.  The recipe I followed said to bake for 1 hour, but my oven tends to run hot and 1 hour would have been too long.  When I made the peach dump cake for my own prayer gathering, last month, I baked the cake for about 45 minutes and there were a few over browned spots.  Today, I baked it for 30 minutes and it seemed just right:

The apple pie mixture was bubbling up the sides when I took it out of the oven.

Here's a photo of the peach dump cake for comparison:

The cake mix/butter mixture forms something similar to a cobbler topping, so it is more like a fruit pie than a cake.  I liked the apple version, as well.

Have you made a dump cake?  If so, what is your favorite combination of fruit and cake?

  1. I haven't tried dump cake yet. This sounds easy and delicious. 😊
The last time I made a cake was about 6 months ago, and it was a chocolate pound cake.

    1. Chocolate pound cake sounds very good! The dump cakes are easy to make and they make a good dessert for a gathering.

  2. I've never made a dump cake but reading this has made me think I may try one. It looks very easy. Will I be able to freeze it in portions?

    1. That is a very good question, Eileen. The answer is: I don't know! This was only the 2nd time I've made a dump cake and both times, it was for a family gathering. I didn't try to freeze any of it. I suppose one can freeze portions of it and then, thaw them as needed. I was thinking of halving the recipe and baking a smaller cake for myself, using 1 can of pie filling and half a box of cake mix - I could share some of it with my neighbor, perhaps, and there would be plenty for me for a couple of servings.

  3. Ackk! I didn't even see this post until this morning. I almost missed it. As you know, I am on this diet, so no I haven't baked in quite some time; but, this cake looks easy enough to whip together if I wanted a treat to offer guests. I think I may have baked some cupcakes for my visiting grand children several months ago, but I use a vegan chocolate cake recipe that is scrumptious. My daughter can enjoy a treat as well and can take the remainders home with her. I am thinking that if I check the ingredients on the pie filling and cake mixes, this could also be made into a vegan treat.(no egg, dairy or honey)

    1. Susan, I don't think the pie filling had any animal products in it, but I don't know about the cake mix, and you'd have to use margarine instead of butter, to make it vegan. But, the potential is there to make it vegan. :)
