Wash on Wednesday

The old rhyme says:
"Wash on Monday
Iron on Tuesday
Mend on Wednesday
Churn on Thursday
Clean on Friday
Bake on Saturday
Rest on Sunday"

By following this order, your clothes will be ready (washed, ironed, and mended), your house clean, and your butter freshly churned and your bread freshly baked for Sunday, and your Sunday best clothes will be washed, again, on Monday, before any stains set in!

I meant to wash on Monday, but managed to do it only on Wednesday!  But, that's OK.  Today, I stripped both beds - my daughter's and mine - changed the sheets, and washed the sheets that were on the beds.  They are now hanging up to dry.  There is another small basket of laundry to be done, but I'll wait and do them on Monday!  Not enough of either lights or darks to make a load of each, yet.

In the afternoon, I placed the 35 patchwork quilt blocks on the bed, on the blanket I am considering using as the batting, to see how they look:

Set in Rows

I also tried placing them "on point" (some of the squares would have to be cut in half along the edges):

On  Point

What do you think?  Which setting do you prefer?

I do have one other setting I am considering, one that will incorporate some leftover or "orphan" blocks, but I haven't tried it out, yet.  Of course, my ultimate "orphan" blocks quilt was this one that I made for my daughter, a few years ago:

Love is a Wild Goose Chase Quilt

The hearts (intended for a baby quilt for my daughter, but never made into a quilt, back then), the triangles, and the bricks (rectangles) had all been cut years ago, in an attempt to tame the stash!  I wrote about it, here.  My daughter took this quilt up to Berkeley with her.

The next step is to decide on a color for the sashing.  I think it needs a strong, saturated color to pull it all together and set it off.  I would like to use something I already have in my stash.  I took a quick look and I have some dark green fabric, some blue floral fabric, and some red (the largest piece of fabric).  I will try them all out, tomorrow.

Later in the afternoon, I went to the pharmacy to pick up one of my medications and then, I stopped by the dollar store to pick up some groceries:

Groceries
I will do a separate groceries post.

They also had some fresh herb plants and I bought these:

Greek Oregano, Italian Parsley, and Rosemary
They had tomato plants, too, but I didn't buy any because I wasn't sure if it was too late to plant them.  I texted M and he said to go ahead and buy them, so I might go back, tomorrow.

After I came home, I had a cup of tea and had a long chat with Aunt T who called.  I really do owe her a visit!

Leftover rice, fish curry, and okra for dinner.

I've spoken with daughter several times, today.  She had a fever in the morning and took the day off from work, again.  In the afternoon, her fever "broke" and she felt better.  She is planning to go to work, tomorrow.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Daughter feeling better
- Spending the afternoon playing with fabric
- Bargain plants at the dollar store
- Being able to do the laundry on any day, not just Monday
- Great "oldies" type music programs on public TV

  1. Glad to hear your daughter is feeling better.

I like both arrangements of the squares but if I have to choose one, then I'd go for the on point option. However, adding the sashing may change my answer. I've been no use at all, have I? 😂😂

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I'm happy she's feeling better. Yes, I know, she's an adult, but still, she's my little girl and she's by herself, up there. It's never fun when you are alone and sick.

Neatly in rows is my standard method, the on point will be a little different. I will play around with the sashing and see.

  2. You are amazing. I'm gone for a couple of days and you've started a quilt. Then a couple of days later, you have all of the blocks done! Like Eileen I'm waiting on the background colors to know which arrangement I like better.

    1. LOL, it's called a mile-a-minute method of piecing - you just sew scraps together, without worrying too much about the colors, etc., until you have a piece big enough to cut out the squares. I found it very therapeutic to just sit and sew! I think I want a strong color for the background, as many of my scraps are light colored. On the other hand, given that it is a scrap quilt, I am wondering if the sashing should be made of scraps, too.

  3. I wash my laundry whenever I have enough to do a load. Last night it was before I went to bed, so this morning (Thursday) I could hang them outside. I do laundry on the hydro off-peak hours after 7 PM and on week-ends.

Like Eileen, I also like both arrangements but prefer the on-point. Does that mean you are short of some squares? Of course you are going to make the quilt the way you are comfortable with and both patterns are equally as charming.

So glad to hear your daughter has rounded the bend is feeling much better than she has been. She was very wise to stay away from work to rest and recuperate.

    1. Susan, you are wise to do the laundry during the off-peak hours. We are urged to use our appliances after 7:00 p.m., ourselves, to cut down on the electricity demand during peak hours (lots of air conditioners are on during the day), but I don't get a break in the rates I pay, so I just wash when convenient.

No, I have sufficient squares for the on point arrangement; just that some squares will have to have their points cut off to accommodate a border, all around. I am still considering what might be the best way to set the blocks.

Thank you, daughter texted this morning, to say she's feeling much better and was going to work. I'm glad she allowed herself to take 2 days off to recover. :)

  4. Your daughter's quilt is so beautiful.
You are fast Bless. You already have the pieces for the new quilt. Between the two arrangements I think I prefer the on point one.

    1. Thank you, Nil. The on-point setting seems to be the more popular one, so far!

  5. Glad to hear your daughter is on the mend.

Well, I'm a fuddy-duddy because I prefer the quilt blocks in rows and I think it is going to be a lovely quilt whichever way you arrange them. The quilt that your daughter has is exquisite!

I often think it might be a good idea to have a set day for laundry, but I find myself stretching it through the week, and if the weather looks good for drying I will usually see what I can gather up from the laundry bin. Today I had a full line as I was washing some items before we go on a trip tomorrow. Our power came back yesterday evening as promised and today was fine. In winter I don't have to check the forecast as I use the basement for hanging laundry and the dry air from the wood furnace is perfect and the laundry helps put some moisture into the air.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Neatly in rows is my usual arrangement, all nicely organized and contained! I'm playing around a bit, now, though, trying different settings. :)

I'm glad your power came back, last night. I, too, hang the laundry out to dry in the night, during winter, and the heater dries everything, quite nicely, and, as you say, adds a little moisture to the air.
