Thursday: "In the Eye of the Storm"

Last night, I made a conscious effort to get ready for bed early and was in bed by 11:00 p.m.  I didn't fall asleep immediately, but, I think I fell asleep before 1:00 a.m., which is good!  I had some disturbing dreams about my mother who had gone to get me some ice cream and was gone for so long that I went in search of her and found that she had forgotten about me and that was followed by another dream where I was combing my hair and if was falling off in handfuls and my mother was trying to curl it for me and the entire curl was coming off!  In my dream, I was very upset that I was losing my hair again, for a second time!  So, not a very restful sleep, but I was able to get up at 7:30 a.m. and feel well enough.  I went to the office and had a very productive day, so that was good.

During my afternoon walk, I went past another public arts display, located a few feet away from the Wishing Bells, I had posted about, earlier.  Actually, I took some pictures on that day, but I went back today and took a few more.  It is a tribute to the police dispatch (911, which is the number to dial to report an emergency) service.   It is called "In the Eye of the Storm":

Plaque

Text from the plaque: "To symbolize the processes and human dimensions of the 911 system, this public art program is comprised of the following elements: Origins/Dilemmas-caller location codes and police incident codes inscribed on the plaza; The Vortex-a seemingly chaotic array of elliptical columns with dark polished surfaces to reflect the city in malevolent manner; The Connection-a glass cylinder, with inscriptions suggesting the interface between an operator and community resources via technology; Outcomes-words inscribed on the outer wall, which suggest the police department's role as a community resource. The interactive space in The Connection symbolizes that fragile moment when the person in distress calls the 911 system, to make an empathic yet anonymous connection. People on either side of the panel can talk to each other and cooperatively interact and revolve the panel, but not see each other."

Walking among the columns and being inside the glass cylinder made me feel slightly disorientated and a tension.  I felt relieved to walk past the Wishing Bells, after that, and hear the sound of the bells as the wind blew through them.

After I came home in the evening, I watched the news and a couple of programs on TV (NOVA, Secrets of the Dead).  In between, I cooked dinner - chicken stir-fry and rice:

Chicken Stir Fry
I sliced up the teriyaki chicken tenders that I had taken out of the freezer, yesterday, and added onions, carrots, broccoli, celery, and cashews to it.  Trying to get my vegetables in my diet!

Dinner
I'll take some of the leftovers for my lunch, tomorrow.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Not feeling so tired
- A safe drive to the office and back
- A productive day at the office
- Having 911 services available
- The technology that enables me to chat with my daughter, exchange emails with friends, and blog!

My accomplishments today include going to the office, going for a walk, experiencing a public art display, exchanging emails with a friend, cooking dinner, and doing dishes.

How was your day, today?

  1. The interactive revolving panel sounds a really interesting experience. I love 'hands on' art exhibitions although have to admit I'm always glad there are explanations as to the thought process the artist went through to create their pieces!

I have 2 bad dreams that I always remember vividly. I can go for years without having them then have several a year. The first is my teeth are falling out - quite a common one I'm sure. The second is I'm at the first house on a street we lived on between the ages of 7-14 and a ghost is chasing me. I have to work my way through all the houses and get to my own before he catches me. What's really strange is that I went in most of those houses when I was little and there are things I can remember about them all in my dream, decor, people, animals etc. Anyway, I wake up exhausted after being chased lol!

Glad to hear you were well enough to go into the office. Have a lovely weekend. xx

    1. Yes, the first time I encountered this particular artwork, I didn't see the plaque and didn't really know what it was supposed to represent. I was able to pick up the fact that it had something to do with the police dispatch service, but I didn't know what the inscriptions represented, etc. Same with the Wishing Bells - knowing why there were 108 bells and what they represented made it more meaningful than just a display of bells.

I, too, often dream of teeth falling out or myself falling down from a height! And, I have dreams of my childhood home. But, no ghosts chasing me! That would be scary!

  2. I guess the sculpture was doing its job if you felt tension when you were among the columns. While I think the meaning of the sculpture is very important, modern art is not my thing. However, I do find it interesting.

    1. It really was the strangest thing! At first, the columns reminded me of some ancient temple ruins in Sri Lanka where there are columns in the plaza area (it is supposed that, at one time, the columns supported a wooden roof), which suggested a sacred space, to me. The columns do radiate out in a pattern, but when I was among them, it felt disorientating. And then, there are so many words in and around the glass cylinder that it seemed chaotic, which was probably the intent, because an emergency dispatch center can be a rather chaotic place, I'm sure.

  3. Yikes - that dream sounds horrible! Are you worried about something? That's when I usually have those kind of dreams.

The display looks interesting. Hope you have a great Friday!

    1. Well, Sharon, I do have a surgery coming up (to have the catheter port removed), so maybe I am a bit concerned about that. But I always have very stressful and convoluted dreams!

  4. Oh dear, what horrible dreams. As a child my aunt told me that cheese gave people bad dreams so it shouldn't be eaten after lunch time! Interesting art work. I am not very good at recognising symbolism in artwork. I'm one of those unimaginative people who simply says I like, or don't like something. That said, I do find it interesting to look at. The stir fry looks very nice - my kind of food.

    1. I must remember not to eat cheese after lunch, then! Although, I don't eat a lot of cheese!

I like art work better when I know what they are supposed to represent! :D

  5. No I would not like being inside the glass cylinders either. Glad you felt calm upon hearing the wishing bells.

Thursday I did my grocery shopping. Lots of buy one get one free. I would prefer they mark items down to the 50% price. Some items like the 5lb potatoes are more than a single or small family wants or needs. The signs indicating buy one get one free were very tiny and could easily be missed if you had not looked at the store ad!
I caught the double charge on my tomatoes but missed the soup, annoying isn't it.

    1. Sandy, I agree, those buy one get one free offers are too much for single- or two-person households! Not everything can be kept without spoiling. Maybe you can take the 2nd item to your church and leave it out for someone to take? I sometimes take extras to the temple and ask the monks to offer to anyone who comes to the temple. Sorry about not catching the double charge on the soup! Very annoying! Sometimes, it's worth going back and complaining, but other times, it's not worth it, especially if you have to make a special trip in inclement weather.

  6. Frightening vivid dreams are difficult to shake sometimes.
Glad you are less tired and I agree about being thankful for technology which allows me to have real time conversations and interaction with my granddaughter. (not to mention a wonderful group of blog friends)

    1. Thank you, Anne. Some of the medications I am on cause quite a few side effects, including fatigue. Some days it is not too bad, but other days are best spent resting.
