Thursday: Continuing the Walking Tour!

Today, I woke up feeling much better.  No light-headedness.  I guess I might have been dehydrated, yesterday.

I went to the office, as usual, and had a productive day.

I called the clinic, in the morning, and managed to schedule my pre-op check up with the doctor.  Of course, it took several calls as they claimed they hadn't received the faxed order from the surgeon's office, when I first called.  So, I had to call the surgeon's office and asked them to fax it again, which they did, I guess, because when I called the clinic back, they said they received it.  But the girl scheduling the appointments was at lunch, so I was told she'll call me back.  I stayed at my desk and ate my lunch (sandwich) at my desk and waited for her call.  She eventually called a little after 2:00 p.m. and gave me my appointment date (towards the end of the month; they said they didn't have an earlier date).  Now I need to call the surgeon's office to let them know, as they need to schedule the surgery within 10 days of the pre-op tests.  I tried calling them in the late afternoon, but I guess they were closed when I called or they had put their phones on hold!

It was another sunny day, which warmed up from a 52F at 9:00 a.m. to 70F or so in the afternoon.  I went for my walk in the afternoon (after I had heard from the clinic).  I went in the opposite direction, when I went for my walk, today.  I took a picture of the Molecule Man, which is a sculpture showing 4 athletes coming together to congratulate each other after a game:

Molecule Man Sculpture
I probably should have tried to zoom in or crossed the street and gone closer to take the picture.  The sculpture is made of aluminum panels and are full of holes to depict the water molecules that make up over 90% of our seemingly solid bodies, according to the artist, Jonathan Borofsky.   Apparently, there are similar sculptures by the same artist in several other places, as well, including one in Berlin (depicting 3 athletes).

Before I took the picture, I waited for two pedestrians to walk by.  One of them offered to pose for me, and when I shook my head, he offered to take a picture of me!  I laughed and said, "No, thank you".  I guess he thought I was a tourist!

Downtown is full of public art displays; I am always passing by them when I drive, but one needs to walk to take pictures.    I took a couple of other pictures, too, of other sculptures, including this one of the Wishing Bells/To Protect and to Serve, by artist Sook Jin Jo:

Wishing Bells/To Protect and to Serve
There are nine cedar pillars and 108 bronze bells:

The 108 Bells

The 108 bells represent the Japanese custom of ringing the bells in Buddhist temples 108 times to ring out the Old Year and to ring in the New Year.

The Plaque Describing the Sculpture

I've taken it easy after I came home, this evening, too.  I called my friend R to check on her, replied to blog comments, exchanged emails with a friend, chatted online with daughter (who finally got her flu vaccination, today, and apparently received a $5 gift card in the process!) and just relaxed.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Feeling better
- Getting my pre-ops scheduled
- Telephones and fax machines!
- Another fine afternoon in which to walk
- So many interesting public art displays to see

My accomplishments today include: going to work, scheduling my pre-ops, and going for another 30 minute walk.

Friday's To Do List:
- Leave a note for gardener friend M
- Go to the office
- Call the surgeon's office
- Text cousin
- Call the temple

Can you believe we have already completed one-third of January?  Didn't the month just start?

  1. Good for you getting your walk in during working hours and you work in a very interesting area.

Would it be easier for you to get sufficient hydration by adding something like crystal light to your water? It works for my hubby who says he just doesn't like plain water.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. It is still too dark when I get home to walk by myself in my neighborhood, so getting the walk in during the day, during my lunch break works out fine. I can eat my sandwich at my desk, while working, or during my morning coffee break, and then, take my lunch break when I feel like going for a walk (afternoons seem to work better).

Thank you for suggesting flavoring the water; maybe I should try some infused water or something. It's not that I don't like the taste of plain water, it's just that I get busy with something and just forget to drink it! I drink a cup of water before I leave the house in the morning, then, I usually drink a couple of cups during the day at the office. I need to increase that to 3-4 cups at the office, and yet, not drink too much before I leave for the hour+ drive home! Today, I drank almost 3 cups at the office.

  2. It's always interesting to see what kind of art work there is in a city. Thanks for the tour.

  3. Glad you got the doctors sorted. It seems a lot of calling back and forth and playing phone tag! Your walk sounds delightful. It's surprising what you see when you really look.

    1. Thanks, Sharon. Yes, seems like these clinics and doctors' offices have the hardest time communicating with one another! Yes, often, we are too intent on reaching our destinations to really look and absorb what we see. We "see" them, but we don't always notice them, do we?

    1. Thank you, Anne. Glad that you are enjoying it! So often, we get so used to our environment that we don't really notice things. It was one of my friends who said to take some pictures when I am out and about; I told her there are plenty of pictures of the city sights taken by professional photographers available online, but she said she wanted to see my city through my eyes - what I thought was interesting, etc. So, I've been trying to do that. At first, I just shared them with her, only, but I am getting braver! I look forward to you posting pictures of your city's interesting sights. :)

  5. So good to see photos of gardens, grapefruit and sculptures all without snow! We had a little freezing rain this morning, followed by snow, and it is windy - a good day to hunker down at home.
Our squirrel was funny, he was waiting on the porch so I threw out 3 peanuts. I have pine bough arrangements on pillars either side of the steps and he took the first peanut up into one of the pots, then decided it wasn't suitable and went down and up into the identical pot the other side to deposit the peanut! He took the other two there as well. At least it was better than what he did the other day, buried one in a lump of dirty snow on the driveway! Does he remember where he puts them? I wonder.

    1. Glad you are enjoying the photos, Bushlandy. :) Yes, it sounds like you are having the type of weather in which to stay home with some hot drink and a blanket. Too cute about the squirrel! Maybe the first pot was already full of his peanuts? Or maybe it was a decoy action - make whoever was watching him think he put his peanuts in the 1st pot, so that if they try to steal them, they'll be looking in the wrong place! Are they raw peanuts? Maybe you'll have some peanut plants in your garden, come spring!

  6. That was quite the challenge to get your pre-op scheduled for later in the month and now to get a hold of the surgeon's office. You need to have a lot of patience to jump through all the hoops. But I know you are a patient person.
I am loving the walking tours through downtown. You have a lot of public displays to enliven your daily exercise.

    1. You know how it is with these clinics and doctors' offices, Susan; the right hand never seems to know what the left hand is doing and doesn't want to know or particularly care! A lot of the time, it seems they want you to do their work!

Glad you are enjoying my walking tours. I am looking forward to seeing some of your own photography when you go on your cruise! :)

  7. Thanks the tour! It was interesting and I'm glad you have "views" to entertain you on your walks. Well done walking too!

Sometimes I wonder if you would waste less time taking all the authorizations and other paperwork in person from doctor's office to doctor's office since it seems rare that those tasks are done appropriately by the staff of the various medical offices you visit. It's got to be maddening! Good for you to keep your cool. I think I'd have lost my mind a long time ago with all this.

    1. Thanks, Nathalie. They don't compete with your lovely pictures of wild flowers and animals, but one does what one can! :)

Yes, actually, when I received the authorization for the surgery by regular mail faster than the surgeon's office did by internet (supposedly, it is all available online to them), I took a photocopy to them during my lunch break! Even then, it took a follow up phone call by me for them to do anything about it! Such is my HMO and, from what I hear from my colleagues about the other HMO that is available to us through our employer, they are not that much better, either! As long as I can call on the phone and try to get things done that way, I can save on parking fees. It's not like they'll do anything with the paperwork, right then and there, even when I take it over - they just accept it and say, "We'll get back to you". My next task is to call the pharmacy to find out about my inhaler that they said they will put in a request for authorization, before the New Year!
