Warm Tuesday!

French Cruller Doughnut

Today, I went to the office in the morning.  Someone had brought doughnuts.  I try to avoid them, but, French crullers are my favorite, there were two left by the time I got to the office, and this one was calling my name!

I left the office at 1:30 p.m. to go to my podiatrist's appointment.  The visit went well, there was nothing wrong with my feet, they trimmed my toe nails for me, and told me to come back in three months.  I made the appointment, for November 28, before I left the clinic.

I had received a text from the pharmacy in the morning, stating that one of my prescription refills was ready for pick up (the texts saying a refill is ready don't say which one is ready; there's another site to go to in order to access that information and neither my daughter nor I have been able to access it!).  Later, I received another text stating that the doctor's office had refused to authorize a refill and to please contact the doctor's office (this text gave the first two letters of the medication).  I didn't bother to call the doctor's office, however, because I know I have an appointment coming up and enough of that medicine to last me till then.  I thought the text referred to two different medications because the first text said the medication was ready for pick up.  So, I stopped by the pharmacy on the way home from the podiatrist's office.  Apparently, the two text referred to the same medication!  However, it was OK, because the first text was the correct one and the medication was ready for pick up!  Good thing I didn't call the doctor's office, because they would have thought I was very confused!  LOL!  Anyway, the long and short of that is: I picked up my medication!

Then, I went to the dollar store, which adjoins the pharmacy.  This is called a 99Cents Only Store, where most items are .9999 cents!  LOL.  But they have other items that cost a little more, including comforters, for $7.99!

Comforter Label

The label says king sized, but the measurements are given as 84"x96", which is more like a standard queen size (86"x93").  But the packaged (pre-cut) queen size (90"x108") quilt batting at the fabric store is priced $11.99 and that's the sale price (regular price is $19.99).  So, I decided to buy the $7.99 comforter to use as the batting for my Road to the Mountain quilt.

The Comforter
I spread it on the bed and it is just the right size for my queen size bed:

Starry!

There was one small area with some stains, which looked like rust stains:

Stains
I hand-washed that area and it looks like they faded, a bit, but didn't go away completely.  I might soak it in some OxyClean to see if it helps.  But the stains don't bother me too much, as they will be covered by the quilt top.  I am also thinking that, with this comforter, I will not need to use a separate backing!  I can just attach the quilt top to the existing comforter backing!

After I purchased the comforter, I went to the bank.

Today, it was 109F again, and almost 90F inside the house when I came home after running my errands.

Temperature Inside

I decided to retreat to the bedroom and turn on the window air conditioner.  Then, I answered blog comments, read my friend's email, and took a nap!  Woke up around 8:00 p.m., had a cup of tea, ate a sandwich, washed the comforter, called my friend R to check on her, and video chatted with my daughter.  She introduced me to a type of on-line puzzles she and her friends have been doing.  They are like brain-teasers and we spent some time trying to solve them!  I was rather hopeless at them, but I managed to get one correct answer and solved one puzzle with her help.  It was a lot of fun!

Today, I am grateful for:
- A good visit with the podiatrist
- My medication was ready for pick up, after all
- Being able to run my errands
- Air conditioning!
- Playing games and solving puzzles with my daughter

Wednesday's To Do List:
- Office
- Launder sofa dust sheets
- Water the front garden
- Tidy the kitchen
- Water the houseplants

There's a lot more I want to do, but it is going to be another hot day and I am not sure how much I'd be able to do.

How was your Tuesday?  Do you have a favorite doughnut?    Is it still hot where you are or is it starting to cool off?

  1. What a great idea to have a comforter for batting and backing. What was the site for the games? I'd like to be confused also.

    1. Thanks, Live and Learn. Assembling the quilt is my least favorite part of quilt making. Attaching the top to a finished quilt is probably cheating, but that's OK! I am not entering this quilt in a competition or anything like that.

This is the link my daughter sent me, for the puzzles:

This site gives more information about it, including the answers:

      Enjoy!

  2. I think attaching your quilt top to the comforter is a genious idea. At that price, will the fabric of the comforter be good enough not to have to sew your own backing material. I suppose if you are going to use that quilt for your own bed, attaching a back is always an option later on if you need to. You are just so clever about this. What a terrific savings doing it this way.

My favourite doughnuts are Tim Horton's dutchies and apple fritters. While I am on this diet, they are now a distant memory.

    1. Thanks, Susan. The comforter fabric seems good enough. As you say, later, if I need to, I can attach another backing.

I like apple fritters, too, but we don't have a Tim Horton's here. At least, I don't think so. I think they are found in Canada, only.

  3. Oh my 90 F in the house is truly hot! So glad you retreated to your air cooled bedroom. Did your kitty follow you?

Our summer weather has been all over the place. We have had some breaks in the usual hot humid August weather. Today the high will be 84 F so yes we are still running the a/c but it is pleasant early morning and in the evening. The long range forecast is for cooler weather to arrive by the middle of next week.

I can't say I am a big fan of doughnuts but I recently purchased some black/whites and both my grandsons and visiting son said they were delicious. Although I don't think the Grandsons have met a doughnut yet they didn't like. LOL!

Enjoy your time with your daughter.

    1. Kitty came in with me for a bit, but the noise of the a/c seems to spook him. He started to meow in a very plaintive manner; the only other time he meows like that is when I put him in the carrier to take him to the vet! So, I let him out and then, of course, he sat outside the bedroom door and meowed to be allowed in! LOL. He's a claustrophobic cat and hates closed doors!

Even 84 is hot when it is humid. It was 86 here, at 9:00 a.m., today. :)

I was unfamiliar with "black/whites". A type of doughnut, I gathered, and wondered if they were chocolate doughnuts with white frosting. Then I did a search and found out that they are half chocolate with chocolate and half vanilla! Can't say I've seen them here!

Thanks, Sandy; looking forward to daughter's visit.

  4. Donut looks SO good...
What a great buy on that comforter.. It will be perfect for your quilt top.. Have fun quilting it. .Can't wait to see it finished..
Proud the meds were at the pharmacy and ready to be picked up. whew..
109 degrees.. I am sweating ,just thinking about it. Since Harvey came to Texas, our temps have dropped, we are at 71 degrees today. So nice ..But, I think it is just temporary. Suppose to get back in the 80's next week.. [ of course 80's sound wonderful in comparison to your 109.eeeh] Have a great day.

    1. Thank you, Judy. Glad it is cooling down a bit for you. 80s are my comfort zone.

  5. What a good idea to buy the comforter and use it instead of buying the batting. I find that sometimes I look at things like bargain price pillowslips and marvel at the amount of good fabric in them for a small cost. I once bought a couple of fancy top sheets at our bargain store and used them to make a chair cover, padded headboard and a padded cover for a metal trunk for the spare room. If I had needed to look for fabric yardage I probably wouldn't have known what to choose! The sheets just happened to work well with the bed cover fabric.

Our weather has been great for several days, warm but not too warm and ideal for eating out on the deck once the day warms up by lunchtime.

    1. Thanks, Bushlady. I don't know why a finished comforter would cost less than a piece of batting, but it works out fine for my purposes. :) I've seen some quilting websites which state not to use bed sheets for backing because they are not 100% cotton and will dull the quilting needles, etc. It maybe so, but I often tie my quilts and I've used sheets on several of my quilts and they've worked out fine for me. Flat sheets have a lot of fabric and I've used them to make curtains, etc. in the past.

  6. That certainly was a good buy you made - such a saving. Actually a very good price even if you'd wanted to use it as a comforter (we would call it a quilt here).

When one of our summer duvets seemed to get thinner and thinner with each wash I cut it into pieces and covered them with oddments of fabric to make soft ‘beds’ for our cats. I thought it was a brilliant idea, but they soon tired of them and went back to whatever place took their fancy!

The temperature on your gauge is what we had over the weekend and up to Tuesday ( unseasonably hot for this time of the year for us ) yesterday it dropped massively and went down to 60f and it rained. Such a contrast; I had to go out and I needed to wear a thick coat ( I do feel the cold)

    1. Blossom, the terms "quilt" and "comforter" seem to be used almost interchangeably, here, although, in my mind, a quilt is a little thinner and a comforter is thicker or fluffier.

Cats certainly tend to have a mind of their own, don't they?

That 30 degree change in the weather overnight would have been a shock! 60F is definitely winter for us, here, in So. California! And, yes, we'd be all bundled up in our coats!

By the way, I sent a reply email to you, but it keeps coming back with a "Delivery Failed" notice. Don't know why. I didn't have anything that important to say in it, but just wanted you to know that I did try to respond and wasn't ignoring you. :)
