The Weekend

Yellow Rose

Friday morning started off with a text from my friend's daughter with a status update on her mother, saying she was more alert and asking if we will be stopping by.  I texted back that we had a few things to do as it was my daughter's last day at home (she needed to set up the new printer and to try on her bridesmaid's dress that she will be wearing to her friend's wedding early next year so I could hem it), but, we will stop by in the early evening.  My friend was much more alert than she had been earlier, which was good to see.  We made it a short visit of about half an hour as we didn't want to tire her too much.  Also, our new Covid case numbers have gone up to over 5,000 on Friday with a test positivity rate of over 7% and those numbers made me feel very uncomfortable being out and about.  Even though masks are required in the hospital, and we kept ours on even on the walk to and from the parking lot, the numbers were too high for my comfort.

On Saturday, daughter went back to Berkeley.  Initial plans had been for her friend to pick her up around 10:00 a.m., but, her friend had to attend a family event and picked her up around 4:30 p.m.  Which was fine with both my daughter and me because it gave us more time to spend together.  She reached her apartment around 11:00 p.m. and we were both thankful that she had a safe journey back.  I did a load of laundry after she left, but, otherwise, had a quiet evening.  Friend A's daughter texted an update on her parents as her dad had some chest pains (he has a heart condition) and was kept in the hospital (same hospital, different section) for observations.  He is OK; I think the pains were due to stress and anxiety.

On Sunday, I spent a relaxed morning and played with fabric in the afternoon.  I cut out some replacement triangles to repair the triangles quilt top and started on the repairs.  I replaced three triangles, today.  I watered the garden, both front and back, this evening, and cleaned the litter box.  Spoke with neighbor T and with friend R and texted friend A's daughter to find out how A is doing (not as alert, today).

My daughter, in the meantime, went grocery shopping to buy bread, milk, and some fruits and vegetables.  She said that the dollar store that she used to go to all the time has closed (they had announced they were closing by the end of the month).  Daughter will miss all the bargains she used to get from there and the sheer convenience of being able to go across the street to buy groceries.  The nearest grocery store now is a short bus ride away and their prices are a little higher.

This weekend, I am grateful for:
- Having had my daughter home for Thanksgiving
- Daughter had a safe trip back
- Friend A had a couple of days of being alert
- Thanksgiving leftovers!
- An opportunity to play with fabric!

This weekend's joyful activities included spending time with my daughter.

Plans for Monday include
- Laundry/change my bedsheets
- Dust the living room and dining area
- Put away Fall decorations (only two items, so that should be easy)
- Take the trash cans to the end of the driveway
- Meal plan

How was your weekend?  What are your plans for Monday and the week ahead?

  1. Roses are such beautiful flowers and your yellow one is no exception. Glad you daughter made it back home safe and sound, but sorry that she has to get her groceries by bus now.

    1. Thank you, June; I was happy to see the yellow rose bush had a few flowers on it. Especially as it looks like one of my remaining rose bushes has died as it is all brown and dried up! It's the one that had double colored roses. I suspect that borers have got into the roots!
Yes, grocery shopping by bus is a bit inconvenient, but, it's manageable. The main supermarket is two bus rides away, but, she's done it before. It's just not as convenient as walking across the street! :)

  2. How lovely that you got a few extra bonus hours with your daughter on Saturday. Not long before the Christmas break! :)
I am with you on taking lots of precautions when out & about - in our region all respiratory aliments are on the rise; flu, Covid, RSV. I am sure you will make the triangle quilt even prettier & stronger with the repairs.

    1. It was good to have a few extra hours together, just relaxing. Yes, we are looking forward to the Christmas break!
I am being very careful about going out and about; "an ounce of prevention" and all that. :)
Thank you; I hope the repairs will extend the life of that quilt. :)

  3. If you're cutting out replacement triangles does that mean you have decided to replace the individual triangles or is it a case of you'll see how you feel and the plan may change?

I'm glad A is more alert and you were able to visit her again. Will you go again if you are worried about the rising Covid numbers?

Good to hear that your daughter arrived home safely. Is her next visit home at Christmas?

I'm sorting out cupboards this week plus I have some more birthday meals to look forward to.

    1. Yes, I've decided to replace the individual triangles for now. But, someone suggested making larger triangles and I am thinking that, I might do that for the areas where there are many frayed triangles clustered together.

I think future visits to see A will depend on how things unfold with her health as well as weighing the risks. Maybe another quick visit to drop off a home cooked meal, mid-week?

Thank you; yes, my daughter's next visit home will most probably be over Christmas. Not quite sure for how long - maybe a week, maybe two? It depends on how much vacation time she will have available; only Christmas Day and New Year's Day (or, since they both fall on a Sunday, the Monday after) are paid holidays, here. The rest of the time will be vacation time off and she gets 3 weeks of vacation time each year, accrued at the rate of x hours per month.

Sounds like you'll have a well balanced week with some housework (sorting of cupboards) and fun (birthday meals). :)

  4. How hard for A's husband at this time. I hope that they are both feeling better, but I realize that for A this is a waiting time, and a time for letting go for him. I'm glad your daughter had a safe journey back. What a pity about the dollar store which has been so convenient for her.

Yesterday I sang in the choir but I sat most of the time. I spent some time playing games on the internet in the afternoon, not something I usually do but once in a while. This morning I did some grocery shopping and visited the dollar store while DH was with his pals, as we could go in and back together. Having a shopping bag on wheels made it easy to ferry shopping without driving closer to the stores.

    1. Yes, this is a very difficult time for A's whole family.
I'm sure you are glad to be singing in the choir, again. Sounds like you had a busy morning. My daughter has sone of those shopping bags on wheels and she might use that when she goes grocery shopping, next, although, she says it's a bit awkward to carry it in the bus.

  6. I am glad your daughter got home safely. That is really too bad about her dollar store closing. How convenient it was for her to have that so close.
Is the new store via the bus ride another dollar store or a regular grocery store?
I like how you just do the slow and steady wins the race approach to the quilt repair. Maybe I should learn from you.
I've been busy today with yard work, cleaning the bathroom, continuing with the tree decoration (put it up Saturday) and some crocheting - of course :). I also finished making a new curtain for one of my living room windows.
My 4 front of the house downstairs windows had roman shades on them with wooden shutters on the bottom half of the window.
I had grown very tired of the old roman shades. They were broken and could no longer be raised so I couldn't open them. (And they were a color I never really liked)
So I took them down and threw them away last week. I've been working on replacing them and am pleased with my frugal use-what-I-have approach. I am really happy with the way it's coming out.
(No one will know that one curtain is a thrift store $2 table cloth right? lol

    1. Thank you, Debra. The store my daughter will go to now is a Trader Joe's. It is, in my opinion, more of a specialty store than a regular supermarket. But, it is relatively close to her (less than 2 miles and she could walk if needed), and she has been going there for her half & half, eggs, etc. and more recently, she has found that their produce prices are comparable to what the dollar store was charging. There is also a Safeway, but, that's further away and requires two buses to get to.

"Slow and steady" is the only way to go when it comes to quilt repairs! Especially if you want to retain the existing quilt pattern. :)

Sounds like you've had a very busy and productive day! I love the fact that you are using a thrift store table cloth for a curtain! What a great idea! I've used bedsheets, but, not table cloth! You are absolutely right! No one will know! :D

  7. The rose is lovely! I'm glad you had a good visit with your daughter. Sorry to hear Covid cases are high there. It is best to be careful.

    1. Thank you, Celie. M will be pruning the roses in January; until then, I'll enjoy the occasional flower. :)
It was lovely to have my daughter home for the week. I am now looking forward to her next visit (over Christmas). Today's Covid count has gone down, but, I think that's because fewer people are being tested. The test positivity rate has gone up to 8.24%. I'm being careful!

    1. Thank you, Sharon. It was lovely to have her home. :) I'm hoping to have the quilt ready in time for her to take it back with her. But, I have to hem her dress before that!

  9. Our last house guest had a flight at 7:45 pm, so I was still in entertaining mode today. Tomorrow I am doing mounds of sheets and towels, then just having a fun day to do anything I want to do.

    1. I'm sure you enjoyed having company over. Catching up on laundry and then, taking the rest of the day to have fun sounds like a wonderful way to spend the day, tomorrow. :) I have a doctor's appointment, tomorrow, but, after that, I think I'll spend the day playing with fabric! :)

  10. It is so lovely that your daughter was able to visit with you, and that she enjoyed a safe journey home.
I'm sorry to read your friend's husband is also unwell. It must be a very difficult time for their daughter. I expect she is thankful that you are there to offer your support. Playing with fabric will be a nice way for you to relax. Xx
