The First Zucchini on Monday

Remember This?  Photo Taken Last Week (6/8)

Less than a week later:

Zucchini: 6/13/22

I decided it was time to harvest it:

The First Zucchini Harvest of the Year!
(Another Candidate for SPSH #20: You Grew It!)

No other zucchini to be seen in the garden, yet; however, there are two more female flower buds on the plants, including the plant that produced this zucchini, so, there is a promise of more zucchini in the future, although it might be more manageable, this year!  I think I had better take all the zucchini I still have in the freezer and make a batch of chutney with it!  LOL.

Today, I woke up without a headache and I am glad!  I made sure I got 8 hours of sleep, though, and I've been trying to drink plenty of water, although, so far, I've only drunk a little more than 6 cups of water.  Need to drink at least two cups more!  I am not including the two cups of tea and the bowl of soup that I had for dinner in my water count.

Today, we had a mild day, with the high of only 80F.  I changed my bed sheets (finally switched from flannel to cotton for the summer!) and did two loads of laundry, today.  All the laundry, including the sheets, were hung up inside the house to dry.  I hang everything inside the house because I am afraid of fleas getting onto the laundry if I dry them outside.  Everything dries within a few hours, depending on how warm the temperatures are.  My dryer uses natural gas to dry the laundry and every month, I get a review of my gas usage from the gas company, showing how much (or how little) I used in comparison with similar houses in the neighborhood.  I always use more than my neighbors in the winter and usually use less during the warmer months of the year!

I also dusted, checked the fridge (nothing to toss out), took the trash cans to the curb, watered the front garden with the water I had collected, took the kitchen compost to the garden, harvested the zucchini, and meal planned.  I was able to accomplish today's to do list.  In addition, I watched most of the January 6th Committee Hearing on TV.

Breakfast had been a slice of multigrain bread, toasted and buttered.  I ate that soon after I had taken my morning medication which must be taken before eating.  A little later, I ate one of the plums from the garden (I am saving the rest for my daughter).  Much later, I had a salad for lunch.  Then, three of the Marie cookies with a cup of tea in the evening.  Finally, the very last of the chicken and vegetable soup for dinner, with a slice of multigrain bread, toasted.

Today, I am grateful for:
- The first zucchini to be harvested!
- No headaches
- Working appliances
- Phone calls from family (Aunt C, Cousin P) and friends (friend R); video chats with daughter
- Television

Today's joyful activity was harvesting my zucchini!

Tuesday's To Do List
- Dust the family room and my bedroom
- Put away the laundry
- Tidy the linen closet
- Water the house plants if needed
- Call the doctor's office to see if they received the scan results
- Bring the trash cans in

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. I have 3 zucchini (courgette) plants given to me by friends from church. They have some fruits (none fully ripe yet) and beautiful golden flowers.

    1. Hope you will get a plentiful supply of courgettes from your three plants, Angela. :)

  2. That is an impressive growth spurt of your zuccini, we call them courgettes here of course. Making chutney with last year's harvest sounds a good idea. I'm glad your headaches have gone and changing to summer bedding is good, I have changed to a summer weight duvet and am sleeping better. What a shame about the worry of fleas on drying your laundry outside, I much prefer my washing dried in the fresh air but use the tumble dryer when the weather is bad, I have some medical tests today, I hope your scan results have a good outcome for you.

    1. These zucchini/courgettes seem to grow to alarming proportions practically overnight! Last year, we let them grow too big and things got out of hand! This year, I'm determined to pick them before they get too big!
Maybe I'm being paranoid about the fleas, but, I'd rather not risk it! Need to get some of the outdoor flea spray.
I hope your medical tests go well today, Eileen, and all the results will be good. (((HUGS)))

    1. I am sure the allotment keeps you busy during this time. I'm glad you are having a more restful day, today. That zucchini grew practically overnight, didn't it? As my gardener friend M says, just add water and heat! Thank you for the well wishes for the scan results. :)

  4. Is there any reason why your not including the cups of tea and the soup in your fluid intake count? I'm only asking because the nutritionist always confirms that the total fluid intake for the day includes teas, coffees and soups.

So, it's the start of your zucchini season. Maybe we should all guess how many you harvest in total this year? You'll have to remind me how many plants you are growing though.

    1. Eileen, I'm not counting the tea because I drink black tea which has caffein (although I drink it with milk and sugar) and caffein is considered a diuretic. I probably don't drink enough tea for it to become a dehydrant, but, I don't include it in my count. Soup has salt which is another dehydrant, so I don't include that in my count, either. I might include fruit juice if I have any.

Yes! Zucchini season has started! :D I have a total of 5 plants, this year (there were 14, last year and I harvested just over 130 zucchini!) I'm growing a different variety, this year - M says they have fewer leaves so zucchini can't hide under the leaves and escape being detected until they are baseball bat sized! LOL.

  5. I have seen our first zucchini in the garden. It's not big enough to harvest yet, but they seen to grow overnight as you have shown. However, I did harvest my first head of cabbage. I have one more that I hope it will get bigger before the worms take over. I have the plants covered, but still found a cabbage moth on them.

    1. Keep an eye on those zucchini as they grow in no time! Especially when it is hot and I see that you are having a heatwave in your area. Well done on harvesting your first cabbage! Hopefully, the other one won't get worm eaten before you pick it! My broccoli patch seems to be full of cabbage white butterflies, these days! :D I don't mind because I've harvested quite a lot of broccoli, already.

  6. The colour of the zucchini flower is so pretty. I think I read somewhere that you can batter and deep fry them (but I never deep fry). Of course you need the flowers if you want the fruit,
I took your advice and drank water before and after my Covid shot yesterday. DH did nothing but only has a sore arm. My arm is only slightly tender but I was very tired today, and I had another appointment, a mammogram. I was very thankful that the 4 images turned out well and didn't have to be done again!

    1. Zucchini flowers are a pretty color, aren't they? Yes, you can batter and fry them; you can stuff them first, too. But, if you don't want to fry, you can add them to salads, omelets, rice, etc. I have to admit that I have not tried eating the flowers, yet.
I'm glad your mammogram images turned out well and I hope you will recover quickly from the side effects of your booster shot. Rest and take it easy for a day or two.

    1. Sorry your comment went away, Celie. I checked my spam folder, but it wasn't in there. Thank you; so far, I haven't heard from the doctor's office (I called and left a message, today).

  8. Hooray for the first zucchini! I think we need some sort of joy-ometer to track the satisfaction derived from this, compared the one you will harvest last, before pulling up the plants in a few weeks' time! I have three in the garden, looking good, but no flowers as yet... We are of course behind you in terms of the growing season.

    1. Ha, ha, a joy-ometer sounds like a wonderful thing! The first harvests are always greeted with so much joy, aren't they? Then, by the end of the season, one can be heard muttering, "Aren't you done, yet?" LOL. Hope you have a good crop of zucchini/courgettes, Lady Ella.

    1. I'm feeling well, again, Jules, thank you. Much of this year's zucchini crop will be turned into chutney, I think. We really enjoyed the chutney we made, last year and they made good gifts, too. :)

  11. You had a nice productive day last Monday - I can't believe I'm a week behind. I've been busy working everyday in the yard and pooped when I come in!
I will read on. I'm think your daughter must be home for her visit by now.

The zucchini harvest has begun :)

    1. You have been busy with your garden! Yes, the zucchini harvest has begun! There are 5, possibly 6 although that one looks like it might not do well, on the plants, more zucchini waiting to mature!
