Organizing Behind Closed Doors on Monday

It was a sunny day, today, but I just could not get warm!  I woke up, feeling cold, this morning, and turned up the heater and never turned it off, all day!  I'm bundled up in a sweat suit and a knitted cardigan, with a wool scarf around my neck, and a pair of socks on my feet, and still feel cold!  I had planned to go grocery shopping, today, but I decided not to.  I only went outside, wearing a jacket over my cardigan, to take the bag of the kitchen trash out and to take the big trash can to the curb!

I spent a relaxed morning, having a cup of tea, responding to blog comments, reading and commenting on a few other blogs.  Daughter, too, could sleep in as it was a holiday, here, today (Presidents' Day) and she didn't have to go to work.

In the afternoon and early part of the evening, I went through several of my kitchen cabinets, sorting through and organizing them.  I don't know why I am organizing things that are behind closed doors, as they are not visible to anyone - it's not like I don't have plenty of stuff that is visible which could do with some sorting and organizing - but, some of the cabinets have had stuff shoved into them and they get to a state where it is all a jumble and I can't find anything!

The cabinet next to the dishwasher, for example.  I store a couple of appliances there that I don't use all the time - the spare rice cooker, the old crock pot, the big mixer, etc.  It is also where I keep the extra boxes of kitchen trash can liners, the extra rolls of foil and cling wrap, boxes of zippered storage bags, kitchen sponges, a container of rice, and other bits and pieces.   When I put the rice cooker back, after the almsgiving, the cabinet was a mess!  Today, I pulled everything out, wiped down the shelves with a damp sponge, and put things back in a more organized way, which, I hope will stay that way!

I still have several other cabinets to organize, including the under the sink cabinet, but, I'll do them another day.

I also did a load of laundry and hung it up to dry, inside the house.  It will dry overnight.

Lunch was the last of the plum sauce glazed chicken drumsticks (just the drumstick as that was all I wanted), and a serving of diluted orange juice.   Dinner was two of the ground beef-zucchini burgers, with corn (1/3 cup, measured while frozen) and a side salad (the last of the lettuce and cucumber, almost the last of the carrots):

Dinner (2/18)
There were four more ground beef-zucchini burgers left and I froze them.

Friend R called in the evening and I had a bit of a chat with her.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A working heater
- A sunny (if cold) day
- Daughter had a day off from work
- Getting some of the kitchen cabinets organized
- Phone calls and emails from friends

Tuesday's To Do List:
- Grocery shopping
- More kitchen cabinet organizing

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. Those days when you just can't get warm are miserable aren't they. I hope you're not sickening for something.

I need to tackle my kitchen cabinets at some stage. I have a very tiny kitchen but I'm sure I could make better use of the limited space with a bit of thought and a lot of reorganising. Maybe your example will spur me on!

    1. I think I might be having a bit of a relapse from the earlier cold and cough that I had. I drank some coriander tea, last night (our go-to home remedy for colds), and put another quilt on my bed. Even went to bed by 1:00 a.m., instead of 3:00 a.m.!

Kitchen cabinets get used all the time and I find that they need regular sorting. Ideally, we take time to put things back properly, each and every time, but, that doesn't always happen, with me. Tiny kitchens can be a challenge, but, at least, everything is close at hand. :)

  2. Sounds like a calm, productive day at home. Even though no one can see behind your kitchen cabinet doors, I think you will be very happy every time you open one and can reach easily for what you want. That always makes me happy.

    1. Exactly, Live and Learn; it makes me feel happy to see the cabinets nice and tidy. Right now, some of the cabinets are a real mess and I feel ashamed, both of the mess and of myself for letting it get to that state!

  3. Good for you getting some cabinet organizing done. Where do you get your energy from? Can I have some of that?

My only plans for today (Tuesday) is to walk to the post office to mail my 6 cards and check on my mail box. Other than that I will see what, if anything, gets my attention.

    1. No energy, Susan; it's more of a bargaining with myself - if I'm going to do X (stay home without going grocery shopping), then I had better do Y (clean out one kitchen cabinet). Sometimes, it actually works! LOL. But, if I had an energy bottle, I'd certainly send it to you. :)

How close is the post office that you walk there and back? I don't know if I would want to walk anywhere when it is cold!

  4. Oh the pleasure in tidying a cupboard! We are funny creatures aren't we? My Tuesday consisted of 5 hours at work, cooking a special tea for Daughter who was coming home after 10 days away, catching up on a few emails and having a long soak in the bath (still to come)

    1. That we are, Eloise. No one else might see the insides of our cupboards, but, it gives us an inner satisfaction to know that they are nice and tidy, doesn't it? Glad your daughter is home after being away and you got to enjoy a special tea with her. Hope you enjoyed your long soak in the bath, as well. :)

  5. It is barely a 5 minute walk. It is the ONLY exercise I get on a winter's day, except for shoveling. However, I didn't even do that this morning. I decided to drive into the Bulk Barn in Kingston to buy some almond flour and a few spices I need to make more seasoning mixes. From there I went to WalMart to buy a couple of board books to add to the baby shower gift for this weekend. So I stopped at the post office on the way out of town. I knew exactly what I wanted in each store and only bought those items. It is a gorgeous sunny day, though a little "crisp". I have already baked my loaf of keto bread because I have had a craving for some.

    1. Sounds like you had a busy and productive day, Susan. I'm sure you walked for more than 5 minutes in the stores, so you got your exercise for today! :) I, too, did my grocery shopping, today and I found that this store sells bags of almond flour! I didn't buy any, but, good to know.

  6. Good for you for decluttering cabinets even if the clutter is hidden. I've noticed that's where normally things pile up - in places where others can't see. :)

    1. Nil, I really didn't declutter, all that much - just straightened things out and rearranged a bit. I had hoped to declutter, too, but...I didn't find anything I was willing to let go of! But, I have a few more cabinets to sort through, so, hopefully, I can find a few things to declutter.

  7. Your chicken drumsticks have been working on me and finally I bought some chicken pieces today and concocted a sauce with maple syrup, melted butter, and ground coriander, grated ginger, ground garlic flakes, ground lemon pepper, and a little salt. (after tasting I added a few drops of tabasco to spice it up). I was aiming for a nice coating like your drumsticks, and when the chicken was done, the dish was messy and the coating delicious. I didn't check what it did to the oven as I think it probably splashed as it cooked! I usually favour the crock pot as I am lazy, but the regular basting was worth the effort.

    1. Bushlady, your sauce sounds delicious! I usually line the baking dish with foil to make clean up a bit easier; I suppose parchment paper would do just as well. Hope you enjoyed your chicken. I have one of those really old crock pots, circa 1978, which was when I received it! Avocado green, too! It still works, but the only problem with it is the ceramic liner does not come out for easy cleaning. Which makes it inconvenient to wash and, therefore, inconvenient to use! But, I don't want to give it away, either!
