Rainy Sunday

It has been a rainy Sunday, although the rain did cease in the late afternoon.  But, it remained cloudy and no sunshine to speak of.  It was cold, too, and I kept the heater on all day.

I spent a relaxed morning, having a cup of coffee, chatting on the phone with neighbor T, a couple of members of the family, and friend R, responding to blog comments, and visiting a few blogs.

Lunch, today, was a salad.  However, in the interest of being absolutely honest about my eating habits, after I posted my blog post, last night, I gave in to a craving and had a slice of bread with butter.  I am mentioning this, because yesterday's post made it sound as if I was being very conscientious about being low carb!  I don't want there to be any false impressions about just how low carb I'm being!  LOL!  Although, considering that it was just one slice of whole wheat bread for the entire day, and not the minimum of two slices I would have normally eaten at a meal (or, even as a snack!), I guess it wasn't too much.  And, it could have been worse, because what I was really craving was a slice of cake or pie, not bread!

Today's salad:

Lunch Salad
A mixture of lettuce, a grated carrot (I love nothing better than to crunch on a piece of raw carrot, but I'm afraid of breaking a tooth, so I grate my raw carrots for the salads), half a cucumber (I've gone through 3 of the 4 cucumbers I bought!), some shredded chicken breast (I saved about 1/3 of last night's chicken breast for today's salad), and a handful of blueberries.   Plus the Caesar dressing, of course.  I grazed on this salad all afternoon!  Let's just say that I wasn't very hungry!  Dinner will most probably be leftover rice, dhal, and green beans (all from the fridge).

In the meantime, someone stretched himself out on the sofa and took a nap!

Cat Naps!
I guess the light from the living room window bothered him because he pulled the blanket over his head and held it in place with his paw!

Close Up: "When the light bothers us, we cover our head with the blanket!"

Daughter noted that he is holding his hind paws in what is called the fifth position in ballet.  Yes, he lives up to his name!  LOL!

By the way, here is the photo of the linen closet, taken this afternoon:

Linen Closet
The top shelf has knitted blankets and quilts:

Blankets and Quilts (sorry, a bit blurred)

The second shelf from the top has bed linen:

Bed Linen

I have 3 sets of queen size sheets for my bed (1 flannel set, which is on my bed, right now, and 2 cotton sets); the 3 twin beds (my daughter's bed pulls out to make two twin sized beds, and the 3rd bed is in the guest room) share 5 sets of sheets, although the 5th "set" consists of two fitted sheets (daughter doesn't like flat sheets), and there is one additional bed sheet which my grandmother hand embroidered.  The pillow cases for all the beds are stacked in the middle (if you click on the photo to enlarge it, you'll see hand written labels on the edge of the shelf, identifying what is what - I did that, one year, to help my daughter figure out where things went!).  There are a lot of pillow cases because I sewed a bunch of new ones for my daughter, last year, and we both have more than 2 pillows on our beds.  I occasionally use old pillow cases to store quilts and blankets, as well, so having extra pillow cases is fine with me.  I also store extra soap, etc. on this shelf.

The middle shelf has towels, including some new kitchen towels received as gifts, as well as light bulbs, a packet of candles, etc., stored at the very back:

The shelf below that, houses the crocheted table covers my mother and grandmother made, some extra Christmas gifts, and a stack of old cushion covers, a package of new lace curtains, a couple of flags (a large American flag and a Sri Lankan flag), etc.

Crocheted Table Covers and Miscellaneous

Finally, the bottom shelf has a really old quilt which I use as a picnic blanket, some extra "yo-yo"s I sewed together after making my yo-yo quilt, 4 old bed sheets and 6 towels which are used as sofa covers (the towels go on the arms of the chairs) to keep kitty fur off the sofas (I haven't covered the sofas since Christmas and now, I need to wash the cushion covers again, as they are so full of kitty fur!), as well as the white sheets used to cover the sofas during almsgivings; I also stored some knitted items there (shawls, etc.), as they are too bulky to be stored in a dresser drawer:

Sofa Covers, etc.
This bottom shelf is a bit of a hodge-podge, but, it is as organized as it is likely to be!  I didn't declutter anything, yesterday; that is a project for another day.  I know I have an abundance of linens and stuff, but most of them are being used.  The crocheted table covers are not used that much because they are hard to wash (two that I washed tore and I felt so bad!), but they are something that will not be decluttered during my lifetime.

Today, I am grateful for:
- The rain we had this morning
- The afternoon being clear
- Phone calls from family and friends
- A relaxed day
- My daughter didn't hurt herself when she slipped and fell in the bathtub, today!

Monday's To Do List:
- Go grocery shopping if not raining
- Take the trash cans to the curb
- Sew my new curtain
- Laundry
- Paperwork (at least 15 mins).

How was your Sunday?  What are your plans for Monday and the upcoming week?

  1. Your linen closet looks great. I think it must be a little bigger than mine because there's no way I could get that much stuff in mine.

    1. It IS a lot of stuff, isn't it? Sigh. Now that I have a working dryer, I might think about reducing the number of sheets I have, especially the one used as chair covers. I can dry them in a matter of hours instead of a day or overnight. But, for now, everything fits, so, I am OK with that.

  2. Having the occasional slice of bread does not detract from all the progress you have made since the beginning of the New Year. You have cut back on the consumption of carbs significantly. That is what your doctor has asked you to do. I think it is harder to cut back than to eliminate grains and flours entirely, like my doctor has asked me to do. You are doing an amazing job. Keep it up.

Your linen closet looks so very neat and tidy. I don't have a linen closet, so I use drawers and shelves to hold my linen close to the area I need them. Sheets are kept in the bedrooms, towels in the bathroom (or kitchen) and tablecloths in the dining room. Seasonal linens are stored with the rest of the decorations in bins. I don't keep a lot of spare linens because storage is at a premium.

Dancer looks so very comfortable. He reminds me of my dogs who also used to nap wherever they felt like it. Just imagine Dancer, only 5 times bigger. He would take over the whole couch or lie across the queen size bed, if he could get away with it.

    Have a great week, Bless.

    1. Thank you, Susan. Yes, that's what my doctor said - cut down and substitute whole gains for white rice and white bread, etc. And, I am trying. I goal is to keep my blood sugar levels under control. In addition, I have lost 10 lbs., which is also good! I have now gone from being obese to overweight! LOL.

One of the features I love in this house is the linen closet! There weren't any linen closets in the apartments I've lived in prior to buying this house. Like you, I stored my linen in drawers or a shelf in the clothing closet. I think it would be hard to give up my linen closet, now! I've got so used to having one!

Dancer is too much! I don't know how I'd manage with a dog 5 times his size! I can just imagine him taking up the whole couch or the bed! :o

Thanks, Susan. Hope your week goes well, too. Take care.

  3. Hahaa Dancer is so funny. :)

Your linen closet is very neat and tidy.
I don't have a separate linen closet. I installed a wire shelf above the exiting shelf in my bedroom closet and keep linen there.

Seeing photos of your salads inspired me to eat more salads. Yesterday I made two types of salads and a vinaigrette. :)

I hope your are having a relaxing Monday.

    1. Dancer is too much, at times. :D

Thank you, I'm hoping it will remain as tidy for the rest of the year!

Well done on making the salads! I am assuming you added lots of greens from your garden, in them. I should try growing lettuce!

Hope your week is goes well, Nil. Take care.

  4. Your linens look wonderful! So very organised.

I think everything in moderation is okay. I just need to follow that myself - especially with the chocolate lol. I think when it's dull outside it makes things feel colder. It certainly makes me feel colder.

I'm glad your daughter was okay when she slipped in the bathtub!

    1. Thank you, Sharon - I did tidy it before I took the photos! :D

Yes, I agree; everything in moderation. Unfortunately, I now have to worry about spiking my blood sugar levels, so, I have to be careful even of what I eat in what I think is moderation!

Thank you; apparently she bruised her leg - I told her to ice it.

Hope you are doing well in all that snow and ice, up there! Bundle up and stay warm!

  5. You make me want to organize my cabinets. Yours look so pretty. I have cut down on bread and baked goods, too. I don't think one slice with butter is anything to worry about...your cat looks so relaxed and comfortable.

    1. Thank you! At least this one cabinet is organized!

Yes, the occasional slice of bread shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'll figure it out, eventually; still finding out how much I can eat of what without spiking my blood sugar, now that I am off meds for it.

Did you notice that his hind paws are almost in 5th position? :D

  6. I'm good at organising the linen cupboard but not so good at keeping it tidy! Well done anyway, that's another thing ticked off the list.

    Dancer has style!

    1. Yes, keeping the stacks straight and not falling over can be a bit of a problem, and, in my case, the urge to just shove things in there, without taking the time to put away properly!

LOL, Dancer does have style, doesn't he? I love the elegantly crossed ankles on his hind paws! :D
