Sutures Out

Today, I was woken up by a phone call at 6:45 a.m.  One of my friends, A, who is also the niece of my late friend I (who died a little over a year ago in November 2016), called to inform me that I's husband passed away, last night.  He had been ill for some time, in and out of hospital and receiving dialysis, etc., but, even so, he was at home when he died and the news of his passing was unexpected.  He and his wife had been good friends to my mother and me, from the day my late uncle introduced them to us (they had been his friends in Sri Lanka).  I called their daughters and spoke with them and, at their request, notified a couple of other friends and family members, as well.

After that, I had a cup of coffee, texted good morning to my daughter, and left for my appointment with the surgeon.  It really doesn't matter what time of the day I get on that freeway - it is almost always congested and the drive takes one hour!  But the wait at the surgeon's office was brief and he took the sutures out, pronounced that the incision seems to be healing well, told me to call his office if there is any redness or swelling, and gave me a note of medical clearance to take back to the office.  The drive home was just as congested as the drive to the clinic!

After I came home, I had my brunch - a banana, followed by the last curry puff, a couple of the chocolate cookies I bought, yesterday, and a cup of tea.  There had been another phone call from another friend notifying me of the death of my friend's husband while I had been out in the morning, so I called her back and we chatted, briefly.

The afternoon wasn't very productive, I'm afraid.  I didn't feel very energetic.  I barely got 4 hours of sleep last night (just couldn't fall asleep until after 3:00 a.m.) and then, the drive to and from the clinic probably tired me out.  Also, it was an overcast, gloomy day and I think I feel more energetic when it is sunny and bright.  Maybe, too, the passing of a friend made me feel sad.  So, I rested, replied to blog comments, read a few blogs, played some sudoku and relaxed.

However, I did get the living room and dining area dusted, the living room tidied, the dried laundry put away, my bed sheets changed, and a load of laundry done.  I put out some cooked pork chops to thaw for dinner - my plan is to recook them with some onion, curry powder, and chili powder to have with rice for dinner.  Leftovers will be packed for my lunch, for tomorrow.

Aunt C called in the evening and I chatted with her for a bit.  There have been some additional phone calls, too, about my friend's husband's funeral arrangements, and so forth.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A good visit at the surgeon's office/getting the sutures out
- The incision seems to be healing well
- A safe drive to the clinic and back
- I didn't have to pay any co-pay for my visit today
- More rain in the forecast for the weekend!  (I get to hold off on watering the garden, this week!)

Wednesday's To Do List:
- Surgeon's appointment - DONE
- Get an "OK to return to work" note - DONE
- Put away the dried laundry - DONE
- Do some tidying - DONE (living room)
- Dust the living room - DONE; dusted the dining area, too
- Change my bed sheets - DONE
- Laundry (the bed sheets) - DONE

Thursday's To Do List:
- Go to the office
- Visit the farmers' market
- Put away the dried laundry

I am not going to make a big long to do list for tomorrow, since I don't know just how much energy I'll have after going to work and coming back.  So, I'll leave it at that.

How was your day, today?  Hope you've had a good day.

  1. Even though it was a good day in that you got your stitches out, it's got to be a difficult way to start the day hearing about your friends death. I'm sorry about your loss and hope good memories of him add more light to your life today.

  2. I'm sorry about your friend's husband death, Bless.

I hope you have a better day today and that you got enough sleep last night. I have the same problems with driving tiring me a lot more these days, and gloomy weather sapping my energy!

    1. Thank you, Nathalie. I did get a little more sleep, last night. But, still wasn't ready to wake up when I had to, in the morning! LOL! Hope you are having a fun spring break with your daughter!

  3. I'm very sorry to read of your friend's husband. You've known them a long time and it must have come as a shock.
I'm really pleased your incision is healing well but if you're feeling tired listen to your body and rest. Most things can wait, except for eating chocolate cookies, but of course that goes without saying. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. Yes, I've known them a long time and they were like family to my daughter.

Yes, I am resting, but, then, I start to wonder if I am just being lazy and trying to make excuses for not doing things! So I do the "5 minutes" game - do something (a baby step) for 5 minutes. Stripping the bed and getting out the new sheets from the cupboard is one step; starting a load in the washing machine is another baby step; remaking the bed is another. In between, I sit and play (cross word puzzles, watching TV, etc.) :)

  4. Very sorry for the sudden loss of the gentleman who had been close to both you and your mother.

I no longer like driving on freeways and even here where I live you must have your wits about you. Traffic is congested as you say whatever time you go.

I hope you slept better last night and had a good first day back at work. Are you in the new building now?

    1. Thank you, Sandy. Both he and his wife were good friends and the friendship continues as I am friends with their daughters and niece and my daughter is friends with the niece's daughters. :)

I did sleep better, last night (and could have slept longer, but my alarm went off!) First day back at work is going well; spent the morning catching up on emails (I am at lunch, right now). Still in the old building; the move isn't until sometime in April. :)

Hope your day is going well, too, Sandy.

  6. Of course you are going to feel drained learning about the unexpected passing of a dear friend. Add to that the lack of sleep, and I am surprised you got anything done. And you did a lot, in my opinion. Tomorrow may be a sluggish day once you get home. Going back to work after surgery will take some time to adjust. Please be careful and don't overdo.

    1. Thank you, Susan. Yes, the events of the day were bad enough on their own, but, taken together, they were pretty draining. I came home tired, today; I'm having a cup of tea and hoping it will revive me. :)

    1. Thank you, Sharon. The incision is healing well and I went back to work, today. But working and a walk tired me out, so I need to work on building up my stamina, again!
