Rainy Saturday

We had rain!  From a misty-fine drizzle in the morning that barely wet the ground to a proper drizzle around noon to showers later in the evening!  The rain was much welcome and the garden got a good soaking.

I spent a relaxed morning, responding to blog comments and reading and commenting on other blogs.  I also cleaned Dancer's litter box and swept the bathroom floor.

Cousin P called a little after noon to ask if I was going to the viewing and, if so, could I give her a ride.  I said, yes, of course.  The viewing started at 4 o'clock.  I picked up cousin P and drove to the funeral home.  The rosary was said and some hymns were sung and then, there was a small reception at the funeral home, itself.  They were also having a service at 6:30 p.m., but I didn't stay for that.  I did ask my cousin if she wanted to stay for the service, as she is Catholic, but she wasn't keen to stay.  So, we took our leave and I dropped her at her home and came home.  Even though our rain wasn't very heavy, some of the intersections were flooded, but I was able to drive through them, safely.

I spent most of the evening relaxing, too, but I did, eventually, change the dust covers on the family room sofas and do a load of laundry.  After that, I watched some TV and knitted.  Still later, I video chatted with daughter.  She went grocery shopping, today:

Daughter's Groceries
Yes, she went to her favorite dollar store for all this.  She called me from the store to say they had frozen chubs of ground beef for $2.99 for 1 lb. and if that was a good buy, but I wasn't sure about buying frozen meat from the dollar store, so I told her not to buy it.  I have seen small frozen steaks at the dollar stores, here, but I've never bought them.

Today, I am grateful for:
- The rain!
- Being able to drive myself places
- Being able to give a ride to my cousin to the viewing and back
- Being able to attend the viewing
- Safe driving in the rain

Saturday's To Do List:
- Wash the sofa dust covers - DONE
- Attend the viewing/rosary in the evening - DONE
- Clean the litter box - DONE
- Sweep the bathroom - DONE
- Tidy/dust the family room

Sunday's To Do List:
- Tidy/Dust the family room
- Put away the dried laundry
- Wash the dishes
- Adjust the clocks!

How was your Saturday?  Did you remember to adjust your clocks and "spring forward"?

  1. Our Dollar Tree is remodeling. I wonder if we will have food in it like your daughter found. Previously, it only had things like crackers and candy.

    1. The Dollar Trees here carry relatively shelf-stable foods like pasta, cookies, canned and jarred food items, and frozen food, but not fresh produce. But a chain of stores called the 99Cents Only stores carry the fresh produce in addition to all the other item. Obviously, they sell enough to make it worthwhile to stock up on these items. Maybe you should talk to the manager at your store and suggest they stock up on fresh produce. Perhaps, if they see that there is a market for it, they might be more willing to do so.

  2. Brilliant weekly shop by your daughter. Not being familiar with the word 'chub' usef in connection with ground beef but a quick google explained what you were talking about. I have seen such an item next to the trays of ground beef and they are usually a little cheaper. I prefer to be able to eyeball the ground beef!

We gave fad a quick hit of very flaky wet snow. The roads are too warm for it to lay but the grassy surfaces are covered. Hopefully it will not refreeze tonight as I need to go out early (7 am) for some blood work.

Yes changed clocks before going to bed Saturday night and attended usual 8 am worship service. Usual crowd in attendance. It is Mothering Sunday today in the UK so thoughts of my dear sister, mum and sister-in-law now in Heaven.

    1. Sandy, yes, those rolls of ground beef - I used to buy them from the grocery stores a long time ago, but these days, I prefer to see what I am buying, although it's probably not much better! I used to be able to buy a boneless cut of meat and ask the butcher to grind it for me, but they don't do that in the grocery stores, these days. I wish we had brought my mother's old mincing machine! It was a hand-cranked thing that clamped onto the edge of a table, but we would grind (or mince, as we used to call it) the meat in it (the pre-ground meat was unavailable in that place, at that time).

I hope you have good roads, tomorrow morning, when you have to go in for your blood work and that the results will be all good.

Yes, someone else had mentioned Mothering Sunday, in a comment on one of my blog posts. I am sure you miss your Mum. sister, and sister-in-law. (((HUGS)))

  3. where do you suspect frozen foods, especially mea , is sourced for Dollar stores? I know it's not from China because they don't raise beef. I'd be suspicious of pork. We have very strict rules in Canada about how foods, especially meat are handled from farm to retailer. One standard easy for home makers to apply is, was it sourced within 100 miles?

    1. Hon, you raise a good point! I wouldn't have any idea where the meat is sourced for any of our grocery stores! I doubt very much if any packaging will identify that information, other than, "produced/raised in (country name)". I don't even know if there are any meat packing plants anywhere within 100 miles of me!

  4. You are really tackling that knitting project with a vengeance. I can hardly wait to see the completed sweater. I am thinking that the yarn is knitting up very nicely as it has you far more motivated than the other sweater you had started but never finished. Some projects are like that. I am glad this one has you impassioned.

    1. LOL, Susan, yes, some projects have me working on them to get them done, quickly. Others sort of linger in various stages of being works in progress! I think, at last count, I had 3 half done sweaters! There is that grey wool one, a white one (way too big, now, since I lost weight), and a green/black one (again, too big now!) I find that once I put something down, it is hard for me to pick it back up, again.

  5. I second your lack of enthusiasm for buying meat from a dollar store. I am very wary of meat products in budget stores, unless they are well known brands, but in general I prefer to buy meat from the supermarket anyway.
The mention of Mothering Sunday reminds me of all the years when I had to buy Mother's Day cards in May the previous year as I could never find any in Canada in March to send to our mothers in England!
Sweaters! I've finished normalizing the cuffs on the sweater I bought with giant cuffs and now when I have sewn the side seams I shall be able to wear it!

    1. Bushlady, well done on "fixing" the cuffs of the sweater you bought! Hope you'll get the side seams sewn in the next few days. How is your other sweater coming along? (The one you keep redoing.)

That's interesting that you had to buy the Mother's Day cards in advance! I'd have thought, with the large ex-pat British population there, the cards would be available earlier.

Yes, there are some things I hesitate to buy at the dollar store. Not that the grocery stores are always that good, either - remember the fish I bought from the grocery store that had a live worm inside the package? Eww! I haven't bought fish from them, since! LOL.
