Rainy Friday

I went to sleep listening to the sound of rain, last night and I woke up to the sound of rain this morning!

The Plants are Enjoying All the Rain

Soggy Garden
All the rain reminded me of the poem "Rain" by Robert Louis Stevenson:
"The rain is raining all around,
It falls on field and tree,
It rains on the umbrellas here,
And on the ships at sea."

I had a book of poetry by him, titled "A Child's Garden of Verse" when I was growing up.  The Rain poem was in it.  It was one of my favorite books.  I bought the book for my daughter when she was a child, but she wasn't very interested in it.
I worked from home, today, too.  But I took a little time to watch the swearing in portion of the presidential inauguration on TV.  I have watched every single presidential inauguration starting with Jimmy Carter's in 1976, whether it was that of the candidate of my choice or not.
Today, I made some unsweetened lemonade: just the juice of one fresh lemon from my tree mixed with water, no sugar or sweetener of any kind:

Unsweetened Lemonade
It wasn't sweet, but it wasn't tart, either.  I think the lemons in my garden are Meyer lemons, which are not as tart as regular lemons.  I was tired of drinking plain water and this made a nice change, without a lot of extra calories and sugar.
Brunch was an egg, scrambled with the last of the corned beef.  Half a bagel, toasted and buttered, for tea.  Spaghetti and meat sauce for dinner.  Yogurt for dessert.
Today, I also unpicked the waist band of one of my woolen skirts.  This was a skirt my mother had sewn for me a long time ago (mid 1980s) but it is a favorite of mine.  I had given away other skirts she had made, but kept this, even after the waist band got too tight.  Then, several years ago, I unpicked the waist band and made it bigger to fit me.  Well, now the waist band is too loose!  So, I unpicked it with the intention of taking it in, again!  Tomorrow, I will put two darts on the skirt to take it in and reattach the waist band.  I'll take pictures and post once I am done with the alterations.
My gardener didn't come to work on the garden, today, due to the rain, although the rain ceased in the afternoon.  I went for a short walk and opened the windows to air out the house.

Today, my daughter volunteered at a food bank with several of her colleagues from her work place.  She used to do quite a bit of community service in high school through a program in which she participated.  She didn't have time for volunteering when she was in college and grad school, but she's getting back to it, now.
Today, I am grateful for:
- More rain!
- A clear afternoon
- Being able to witness history
- Being able to work from home
- Cousin offering a ride to the monthly prayer gathering, tomorrow
Today, I received the authorization to have a bone density scan done.  Need to call on Monday and schedule an appointment for it.
How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. The rain that's drenching you is supposed to be here tomorrow afternoon, along with high winds and possible scattered tornadoes! I hope all we got is rain... Daughter and I are supposed to attend an Antiques Extravaganza outdoors and hopefully the high winds won't make that too challenging. We'll go in the morning.

I'm envious of people like you who know how to take in clothes and "let them out" too. Me, I just keep all the clothes that I own in every size from 8 to 1XL, so as my weight changes I do have things to wear, even though they might be out of style :) Oh well, I spent 90% of my time at home and in shorts and Tshirts so it doesn't matter too much. Still, it's a skill that I would have liked to have. Both my grandmothers knew how to do that, but my mom never learned and so she didn't pass it on to me, and I can't pass it on to my daughter either :(

I hope you have a nice weekend, Bless. Your daughter chose a positive and productive way to spend Friday, she's a great person.

    1. Oh, Nathalie, I do hope your visit to the Antiques event won't be spoilt by the rain and there won't be any high winds or tornadoes! We are having a sunny day, today, but more rain is forecasted for tomorrow and Monday.

Maybe you can learn to alter clothes by taking some sewing classes? Or, these days, there are so many how-to videos on-line. Maybe both you and your daughter can take the sewing classes together?

Yes, my daughter chose a positive way to channel her energy, didn't she? One good thing this election has done is make my daughter more politically aware.

Hope you, too, have a good weekend, Nathalie.

  2. It's good you have the skills to alter your skirt. That should save a little clothes shopping time.

    1. Yes, and not to mention, some money too! :) I budget a certain minimal amount of money per month, all year long, for clothing and shoes; the more I can recycle what I have in my closet, the longer that clothing allowance can stretch!

  3. SO proud your getting rain for your garden [and saving on your water bill].
Great idea to fix the skirt that your mom made you..
Proud you got to watch the swearing in of the President.. I watched it too.
How nice of your daughter to help with the food bank.. Always makes me feel better, to be able to help some one..
    Have a nice weekend.

    1. Yes, I haven't had to water the garden this whole month! More rain is in the forecast for tomorrow and Monday! I spent most of today, altering the skirt. You'll laugh (or groan) when you see all the mistakes I made, but, I now have a skirt that I can wear! :)

  4. That is serious rain! I am always impressed by your skill with needlecraft.

Re the poem (which I loved), something I memorised when I was about bear's age...

The rain it raineth on the just
And also on the unjust fella
But mainly on the just because
The unjust stole the just's umbrella.

    Take care x

  5. I had the same book when I was a child! My favourite out of it was Bed in Summer. Loved that poem. I was always reminded of it when I was working at 3.30am and having to go to bed early and get up early lol.

It was actually sunny here today! Tomorrow is supposed to be showery in the afternoon but mild (unusual for us) so we think we might go for a walk in the morning.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Glad to hear you have a little break in the weather, with sunshine and warmer temperatures.

Ah, yes, "Bed in Summer". I remember being so confused by it - I was growing up in a tropical country where the sun always set at 6:00 p.m. all year round. I didn't know about the longer daylight hours in summer, and wondered why the child in the poem had to go to bed by day! :D

Hope you have a fine walk, tomorrow.

  6. I know a few poems off by heart, but I wish we had been made to learn more when we were at school. I am interested in poetry now, and try to read or listen to a poem every day. I like the one you have quoted here, as well as the one in the comments. Amusing!

    1. I remember bits and pieces of poems I learned, but, one of the good things about the internet is, I can type in the line or two that I remember and it gives me the poem! I have a couple of books of poetry and two big books of poems that I wrote as a teenager! I used to like writing poetry! :)

    2. That's impressive! Composing poetry is a special skill - and I don't really have it. When I was small I was good at making up rhymes as I enjoy playing with words, and I have a good sense of rhythmn, but decent adult poetry is beyond me - I always want to over explain things rather than just give an indication and let the reader's imagination take over! :o(

    3. Maybe you can try again. Just for fun. Maybe an ode to Puny the Pumpkin that wasn't so puny after all! :D
